The FIFTY - 36/50 - Shredding The Patriarch with Hilaree Nelson & Jim Morrison

Cody Townsend

2 жыл бұрын

Deep in the Montana wilderness lies a legendary line, skied first by some legendary ski mountaineers. The line, The Patriarch, sits deep in a rocky cleft on the cliff strewn North face of Glacier Peak. Chock full of exposure, steeps and overhead hazards, Cody is joined by two of the world's best ski mountaineers, Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison, to navigate the technical dangerous line. On an unusually cold late spring day, they're met with sub-zero temps, rocky rappels and butt-puckering steeps en route to a successful ascent and descent of a line that rarely gets skied.
This is line 36 of 50 of The FIFTY completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

I found myself really appreciating Bjarne in this one. How he seems to get everywhere to get incredible shots and perspectives. Also, music choice was spot on- the ethereal sounds on the ascent and the hard driving ones for the descent. Also, always lovely to see the glow of the mountains on the face of a beautiful woman after a long day engaged in Adventure.

Having lived in Montana for several years (unfortunately not there anymore) I can confirm, it gets wicked cold there especially in the mtns, I remember a couple winters where when it hit 0deg Fahrenheit the shorts and T-shirts came out again because the day before it had been 40deg colder (ie. -40F). I miss MT so much, I'll get back there some day. P.s the cold makes for some of the lightest snow in the world, aka, "cold smoke". *chief's kiss*

The couple who **skied Lhotse** choose to sideslip the entry to that couloir, roped. I guess after a certain point everyone decides not to press their luck too far! Huge props to Cody for skiing the whole line, turns from the top. Though I think you could have safely checked it off roped as well. Scary just to watch, let alone imagine skiing.
@CodyTownsend

I went first and reported back the turns weren’t worth it as it was quite sketchy right there. So they smartly got on rope. Plus I can’t say what I did was pretty. But yes you are right, there are times not to press.

Cody, I've been enjoying your videos so much and they have given me such a broader perspective and appreciation for the amount of work what you're doing takes. I'm in Chamonix right now and today I took the lift to the top of Aiguille du Midi, overlooking Mont Blanc. At the top of the station there's a small ice tunnel you walk through and then you're standing at the top of a steep and very narrow ridge. There's a gate that experienced skiiers can go through to descend (or ascend) the ridge. I stood there for about 20 minutes marveling that people could do this, then got to watch a few people open the gate and work their way across the ridge. Just stunning to watch them move so carefully across such a dangerous feature. What you're doing is on another level, so much respect. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us!

This brings me back to a trip I hadn't thought about in a while. It was early May and Fabs and I had just skied on Robson and were driving south in search of a bit more skiing and stopped in Cooke. I'm not sure if the 50 book was out yet, but we had Tom's "Select Peaks" and had been drooling over the North side of Glacier for a while (One day I'd like to go back and try the AC Traverse, Alex and that crew were having so much fun in their heyday). A few days of good skiing around Goose culminated with a run down the Patriarch. I remember the turns down that upper ramp were a new to me combo of facets and ice. Fabs went first and after a few hop turns he made a hard right turn to tuck in against the rocks and let out big yell. When we hit the bottom of the Patriarch, we slapped crampons back on and And1'd with the Becky which skied much better as I remember. When we got back to camp Fabs was so psyched he convinced me it would be a good idea to go up and ski the West Face as the sun was setting to go catch the refreeze in the alpenglow. The next day it got really warm, we ate some pancakes and we went home. Formative trip for us for sure, and thanks for the cool video.

HOly crap! I thought the ascent hooked left past that cornice (what I now know to be Beckey), I didn't realize they had to go up that couloir underneath that cornice. Wow. interesting call. Cool to see the decision making process and the positive outcome. And then the snow quality at the top! and the downclimbing! wow. so cool. this was the most technically interesting episode in a while! so much to unpack. And no floor or footprint under that tent? Looks like he dug it out and reinforced the walls. Maybe there is a ground cloth under the pad, but that seems to be it. I like that. Amazing. I love the FIFTY more and more with every episode.
