Regional One ( aka The Med ) is the only level one trauma center within 150 miles of Memphis. The problem in Chicago is not the lack of care it's the overwhelming amount of violence.

There is a pretty valid reason for not wanting to open a level 1 trauma center on the south side of Chicago, and I don't think it was mentioned in the video, but someone should probably bring it up.. Most of the people that will come into any level 1 trauma center on the south side, probably will not be able to pay any medical bills they receive as a result of a shooting, and they either have no insurance, or state subsidized insurance, which means that the hospital will not receive payment for services rendered. Even if they have state subsidized insurance, most states setup the highest dollar amount they will pay to any hospital, regardless of whether or not that amount actually covers the cost of the services provided by the hospital. Both of these things mean that either A.) the hospital never gets paid for a lengthy hospital stay for some gang member who got shot for acting foolish (granted, this logic doesn't apply to innocent bystanders, but that's just a tragedy. Tragedies happen all the time) or B.) the hospital could end up getting paid less than the cost of the services they rendered in saving some foolish gang member's life. Neither of these options is beneficial to a hospital, which, at the end of the day, is still a business (albeit an essential one) that is trying to at least stay in the black. To me, it seems that the focus should not be on the fact that the south side needs a trauma center, the focus should be on the fact that the south side needs a cosmic shift in the way it stems gang violence, and the way it deals with all these kids shooting each other. That should be the story. Not that a bunch of old business men do not want to open a trauma center that will OBVIOUSLY not be profitable, or at the very least self-sufficient.

This is very sad but it's not just gun shot trauma and I recent the bias of this reporting. It's any kind of trauma that requires emergency surgery, life saving measures that require certain and very expensive measures. Stabbings, accidents, suicide, beatings, anything that requires immediate action. A trauma center is set up to provide things like O neg blood supplies in stock, surgical suites in state of readiness and that includes trauma surgeons AT the hospital on call etc. This is very expensive. The hospital I worked at on the south side often had to declare the ED closed to emergencies due to over whelming demands on available supplies and personal. Money is God and if you don't have the tribute, you can't get the mercy.

Or maybe your addressing terrorism in general, in which case, you should look elsewhere, Muslims in non-Muslim countries make up an extreme minority of terrorist acts. For example, in America, most terrorist acts are carried out by white people. You're right about one thing, there is a lot of tension between races and culture. Gun culture especially is popular in the South and Midwest. I heard they have *quite* a lot of tension with people there. Do you see what I'm saying with the lack of realization of irony here?

***** Yeah.... no. top 22 gun death related states are all states that don't require a permit to buy or own a gun. States like: Alaska, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Montana, Wyoming, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Tennessee, South Carolina, Missouri.... I could go on. All of those states have about 15 gun related deaths per 100,000 people. Very weak laws on gun ownership.

Doctors, nurses, and EMTs give enough to society. You cannot expect them to work in a war zone, too. Let's see, supermarkets won't open up in these neighborhoods, restaurants won't open up in these neighborhoods, shopping malls won't open up in these neighborhoods...and even hospitals won't. Don't y'all think YOU HAVE A PROBLEM???? Until you have worked in one of these settings as a medical professional and been threatened, cussed at, spat on, hit or otherwise assaulted....or been afraid to walk to your car after a shift...fear of being raped, mugged, shot or stabbed...you will never know. I'm not sacrificing my life for a community that has such little respect for their lives. Sorry.

I believe that the community of Chicago Illinois should come together and protest the amount of shootings rather than force a financial burden on the University of Chicago. I don't know what the answer is but building more trauma centers doesn't seem to be the answer. To many innocent people are victems of the violence in Chicago Illinois and the people need to address the situation first.

However, if you look at the crime and incarceration statistics, as well as other quality of life indicators, you can see that the majority of blacks (for their population size, at least) act that way.

It's not about the shootings, it's about healthcare access. You can tell the people commenting on this video have no medical experience whatsoever. I'm an EMT, and I'm in school to become a trauma surgeon (still a decade to go, at best). First of all, let's look at the gunshot victims. Yeah, I agree, we need to get our shit together and annihilate the gangs responsible for Chicago's violence, but it's not just gangbanging motherfuckers being shot. It's children. It's police officers. It's innocent people too. You're going to consign those people to death in the back of the ambulance because you're not going to open a trauma center in the proper area? Really? Moreover, it's not just gunshot victims that need trauma centers. It's victims of car accidents. Serious falls. Attempted suicides. Victims of assaults. Burns. Anything that causes severe, multisystemic injury. Many of those incidents are entirely unrelated to gun violence, but those people are dying too. In New Jersey, where I work, the rule of thumb is generally to call for helicopter evacuation to a trauma center if the trauma center is 20 or more minutes away. From my town, the nearest Level 1 trauma center is about 15 minutes down the highway, traveling with lights and sirens. In Chicago, they're talking about a 35 minute ambulance ride, on a good day. That's ridiculous. I see a lot of people on here bitching about how "blah blah blah you can't build another hospital". Well, that's great. Because there's actually a massive hospital already on the South Side, in the form of the University of Chicago medical center. Adding a trauma center would cost money, yeah. But it would also bring prestige to the school, create a new training hospital for surgeons of all types, and save hundreds of lives, not just gangbangers, but those innocent victims of trauma incidents unrelated to gun violence. You guys really don't think that's worth it?

+MegaMosh101 So, you are going to accept 60-70k a year as a trauma surgeon, so everyone can have access to healthcare or are you going to have me pay for it? There is a reason you are upgrading from EMT, and it isn't out of good will... Trauma Surgeon 360k a year... EMT 31k a year ... You basically want everyone else to pay for overpriced over regulated medical training. If we want to lower the cost of medical treatment, then we increase the supply, and we do that by fast tracking medical training starting in HighSchool, so students can earn credits earlier for Medical School... However, you wouldn't like that huh? We can look at the UK as an example...
@MegaMosh101
@MegaMosh101 8 жыл бұрын
stu Give you a break with what? We're the most powerful nation on Earth. It's frankly embarrassing that there is a lack of first world healthcare access in one of our major cities. Even if there were absolutely no gangs in Chicago, the south side would need a trauma center.
@MegaMosh101

***** The university is paying for it. While I'm sure it gets government subsidies, those would be happening either way. So this sort of thing doesn't cost taxpayers a dime.
@MegaMosh101
@MegaMosh101 8 жыл бұрын
Astro Aquanaute I don't know what your point is, but yeah, we can look at the NHS in the UK as an example. That's 3 years to get a BS, 5 years to complete medical school, and 6 years in residency (14 years total). In the US it's 4 years for a BS, 4 years medical school (sometimes 3), and 5 years in residency. That's 11 years total. So training is actually faster. In the UK, the average trauma surgeon's salary depends on seniority, while in the US it really doesn't change too much, but the average UK trauma surgeon makes about £120,000, or $180,000. In the US, the average trauma surgeon makes closer to $250,000. So yeah, there's a difference, but it's not nearly as big as you're suggesting. If I really wanted to make the big bucks, in either country, I'd be studying banking. By the way, most EMTs in the United States are volunteers, because our government simply doesn't want to pay for medical services, either at the street or the hospital level. I make zero dollars a year for my work, I work a separate job and volunteer as an EMT on 3-4 night shifts a week. So careful before you go questioning my "good will" there bud, my interest in the medical field actually stems from wanting to make a difference with the time I've got.

It's just weird that instead of trying to solve the problem they go and protest and ask someone else to solve the problem for them. Think about how messed up that thinking really is. Instead of doing what must be done to fix our community we will scream and yell and act helpless until some decides to take pity on us. The thought process is all wrong. It is the thought process of a child. I want or need X so I will have a tantrum till I get it. Think, "If we don't get it, shut it down." The worst mindset is often right after the government kills someone. The government just killed person X, the reporter asks, "What can be done?" The response is, "We need the government to provide more programs." Hello, you are asking the government that is shooting and jailing to provide the solution. WTF?

You won't need trauma centers if you don't have as many shootings. At the end of the day, you can't have hospitals that cant at the very least, sustain themselves financially. People can't work for free, they need to be paid and supplies need to be bought.

Trauma centers aren't gonna "save lives." Rather than protesting for a stop gap, they should be working to improve socioeconomic status by creating opportunities in their disenfranchised communities to avoid people shooting each other in the first place. Even more so, to think a facility's financial cost should not be considered is naive. That's why the iron triangle of healthcare exists; there's availability of healthcare, quality of healthcare, and financial cost of healthcare. You can only have two at any given time while sacrificing the remaining third option.

+Renaldo Smith They like it there. It is strange. I met a woman who complained about being pressured to take a suburban housing choice voucher (basically free rent) location. The schools were outstanding, but she wanted to stay in the hood. She did not care one bit about her children's school or safety. It is really sad. We need to start making birth control a condition of any social welfare benefits (food stamps, housing choice vouchers, section 8,...). Once people get their lives together and support themselves, then they can have children. No child should be born into such situtations.

They should be working by cleaning up garbabge along the streets, highways and there own areas. And they should be a time limit for this program like 10 year limit. And they should house them in building with shared bathrooms and dinner area. If they want privacy they can find a job and paid for it.

Exactly. Those two are up everyones ass when a Cop shoots an African American man. But God forbid they show up to the south side of Chicago to end violence. Oh no, they can file costly lawsuits there. No publicity or money to be made. OMG. I just figured out why there isnt a trauma center there now. BECAUSE THERE IS NO MONEY THERE. A neighborhood full of housing projects can't support a sophisticated hospital let alone a strong and present police force. Then at that point maybe investment opportunities will arrive. Then perhaps jobs. And maybe the killing will stop when people are working. DUH!! Moral of the story? You cant solve problems by throwing tax dollars there. Create a buisness friendly environment and things will slowly change for the better.

Do you have your insurance card ready jic you need someone to care about your next breath? How about sustaining a decent quality of life when a medical issue threatens to bankrupt you? +pwrserge83 True, they do have shitty aim, but there's already 217 people dead this year. It may not be a war in context to 'tanks in the streets, bombs going off, etc', but it's certainly a war when it comes to gun violence. This may sound bad, but I really don't care if the gangs keep killing each other off, just keep the innocent out of it. Three or four days ago a guy was sitting in his home and was shot in the head from a stray bullet, that's the shit that pisses me off.

+Ghastly Grinner Yeah, it's cyclical, but just because your neighborhood has only seen two homicides, doesn't mean the entire city is like that. Humboldt Park has seen 11, Austin has seen 24, Englewood is at 20, Garfield Park is at 12, etc. Like I said, there are 1,253 people shot so far with 217 6 feet under. To me, that's a war. Just because you don't see it happening doesn't mean it actually isn't happening. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, so I apologize if I am. I just am trying to explain that it's bad, and probably won't be getting better anytime soon.

But putting that same analogy into effect with the violence that occurs throughout many states and worldwide makes no difference. Ignorance does not save lives, it diminishes them.
