The Brandon Gonez Show

Күн бұрын

In this week's Your Voice, Brandon travels to Toronto's Little Jamaica which has been known for its culture, food and good vibes for more than 50 years. But right now the community is at risk due to gentrification. Currently there are organizations like Black Urbanism TO trying to save the neighbourhood.

Where is the Jamaica Canadian Association in these times of need for the Jamaican community. What % of Jamaican store on Eglington West is owned by Jamaican's? JCA should have been buying up properties on Eglington West from the early 90's.

@@tcda6ix361 Sure, I may be shallow, but I’m also correct. This area is filled with nothing but dilapidated storefronts and crime. It’s very simple, only one demographic wants this area to remain, meanwhile EVERYONE else wants it gone. But don’t worry, I’m sure our liberal government will help “save” this area.

For real though when I wanted good food and to feel the vibes like I’m back home in Jamaica I used to go down here. I feel so free and accepted there. You got the barber shops and hair dressers. I don’t want to see this part of my culture in Toronto to go away.

The Eglinton west subway should have been built in the 90s with Mel Lastman then the businesses could have been saved. I agree with the gentrification part too. They don't want a unified black community anywhere.

They also should have built it underground in my opinion which Rob and Doug Ford were the only officials to vote for that idea and Giorgio Mammoliti but ofc city counsel wanted to "save money". Friggen criminals

Chinese have it way harder, they just don't have a chip on their shoulder. Grow up. For instance when other people are insulted or fail at something they don't say it's because they are black. They blame themselves like every other race and person does.

They want all of those businesses gone! Do not fool yourself to the bigger plot. Once they run those business’s out they’re going to change that community to some “highty tighty” area flooded with people that walk around with their noses in air. The type of people that would make a big stink about all the smoke at night from the BBQ Drums 😂 don’t act like you don’t know.

Yup!. They've already built a condo right at the corner of Eglinton and Oakwood. The fences and scaffolding makes it impossible to window shop or park. Once the LRT is basically complete the landlords will raise their rent which will probably get rid of the businesses that are left. It's really sad! Eglinton between Marlee and Keele used to be so lively esp. in the warmer months and that is almost totally gone.

Yes Brandon you have it right much more needs to be done. For example that left hand turn going south on oakwood at eglington has a dip in the Ashphalt thta every time I drive by there I feel I will lose a kidney! Oh don’t let them tell you that’s because of metro linx thta dip has been there for over 20 years worse everyday. Mayor doesn’t seem to do much.

Wow ...covid has been more generous than metrolinks..very telling! Thank you for this .. as this will not be mentioned during our nightly broadcast of the news. This is where we want more involvement from our mayor & ward councillors ...in a meaningful way instead of a letter thanking us for our patty day contriburion! Let us really make our words come to life - let us see action, don't tell us black lives matter- demonstrate this through grants, subsidies & inclusive city planning that recognizes and supports a community that has been more than self sufficiency for sooooo many years.

@4:49 its not on the map because they do not own the property. What caribbean people and taking ownership as businesses to have that community? You all are in a fantasy. Businesses pay to have established areas and work with the city to ensure they have what they need. Who is doing that in this area? Smh. People do not even want to be down in that area because of crime.

Hello Brandon, as a Jamaican What we need is ownership like the Jewish, Chinese and the South Asian, why you ask .the doller pass through our hands one time and in the other communities its more like 8 to 10 because they support business in the community. You can't get a Jamaican setting up shop in any of those communities why because they don't want you there. What Jamaican need to do is start changing our mindset and start being owners. Not renters Let's start by being business owners study the stock market and invest in it buy crypto and real estate. Something to think about if Jamaicans had only put $100 in bitcoin in 2010 today it would be worth $72,902,650 USD. one Jamaican could have bought all the business on Eglinton.
