One of, if not the saddest ending of any movie. Based on a true story about 5 brothers killed in world war 2.

✝️ Whoever believes in the Holy Scriptures ( John 1:1 📖 🛐 ) UNDERSTANDS that ALL human beings share the same common ancestors, Adam is the Father of the human race and Eve is the Mother of ALL Mankind. Whoever believes in Science ⚛ UNDERSTANDS that all living things are made up of cells and that cells come ONLY from Pre-existing Cells. We are all Brothers and Sisters. WE MUST LOVE 🫂 1 ANOTHER. 1 Corinthians 3:16 "Don’t you understand MANKIND that all of you together are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit 🕊 dwells within ALL of you?" 1 Corinthians 12:26 "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part rejoices." 🪖 📢 This fam here, we ain't no crew! ✝️ God Bless them ALL 🙏 And God Bless America 🙏 Their Sacrifice was needed, just like the Sacrifice of those who held OUR Flag 🇺🇸 at Fort M'Henry 😓 May ALL their names 🪖 RIP ALWAYS be Remembered Forever Amen 🙏

I served with an old sergeant who, one day in Vietnam, looked up to find his brother standing there. By this time, he’d seen about 8 months of combat duty courtesy of the US Army. He walked his brother to his commander’s tent and said, “This is my younger brother. One of us has got to get out of here.” Since his brother had just arrived, he wound up staying. Fortunately, they both survived.

My uncle, Orrin Crum, was also on this ship, the USS Juneau, and was killed, along with the Sullivan brothers, when it sank during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. I'm thinking today, Memorial Day, of this family member that I never knew, who gave his life for his country. I can't imagine the anguish of the Sullivan family, who lost 5 wonderful men at this time.

Evans was accidentally rammed by an Australian aircraft carrier and was cut in two, killing something like sixty to seventy sailors when the bow section sank, including the three Sage brothers from Niobrara, Nebraska. Their mother and surviving brother lived in the same apartment complex we lived in a few years ago. She past away not too long after we moved to Creighton. Very touching movie. Nice work by veteran character actor Thomas Mitchell, better known as Uncle Billy in It's A Wonderful Life, as the father. Makes some historical errors, like showing the brothers all dying at the same time when three died instantly, one died from his wounds the day after the sinking and one drowned three days later. All in all a very touching movie that lead to a massive war bond drive.

For myself, this film shows all of us a wonderful look at small town life in middle America during the '30's and '40's. It also illustrates the solemn and crucial values and sensibilities that were common place in those days. I intend to make a road trip on November 13 to Waterloo in honor of the family. I feel that I cannot wait for next year....the 80th year since the sinking of the Juneau. I certainly hope that no one calls the event next year an anniversary. I always thought the manner in which Ward Bond enters the home is way, way off. He's smiling, joking and happy as a lark. This is not how it happened in real life and I think was handled poorly by the director. He has an agonizing duty to inform the parents and smiling while entering the house always bothered me. Thomas Mitchell's bit of acting hearing the news was superb, however.

It is written in Neptune's Inferno that the Mother and Father of this family went around the country making speeches to encourage people to buy bonds for the war effort in the Pacific and Christened ships for the Navy. They all came from a small town called Waterloo in Iowa and the townsfolk thought the parents had profited from their sons deaths, "She was all smiles as she smashed the champagne bottle against the ship but it became all too much and before the speeches her legs gave way and she hit the ground sobbing"

The band Caroline Spine has a song about the Sullivan brothers. Thats how I first heard of their story when I heard the song on the radio when I was in the Army at Ft. Stewart, GA in 1996. I asked a guy in my unit, who had previously been in the Navy, who they were and he told me the story.

5 men from my town of clifton nj were lost on the uss juneau /nov 13,1942 including 2brothers ,harold and bill wilk. With all respect to the us marines that were killed on guadalcanal, the amount of sailors lost around the guadalcanal combat zone was 3 or 4 times as many as the marines.. also, in 1969 a navy ship was struck by an austrailian ship during night maneuvers. 3 brothers aboard the american ship were lost. Finally, before the war dept started prohibiting brothers serving together and sometimes father and son serving together, numerous incidents of family loss occurred. the 5 largest set of brothers lost in ww2.

Re: the famous Bixby letter referenced in saving Private Ryan... It turned out she was a bit of a sneaky opportunist (and ran a whorehouse) . Two sons were lost but five letters from five different company commanders sent her letters. One son deserted, one deserted to the Confederate side, and one was honorably discharged.

Probably not the most accurate representation of how the news was given to the family but for a nation at war it was a stirring way to immortalize the sacrifice of the 5 Sullivan brothers as well for all families who lost loved ones in the Second World War.

The Sullivan brothers inspired the movie Saving Private Ryan. And the war department split up siblings after this tragedy. Insane that they didn't see this as a possibility.

As I understand it, one of the brothers would have survived had rescue ships gotten to the scene time but the brass was afraid of another sub attack and left the survivors there alone to die! The Navy seemed to have a great reputation for doing that as witnessed by the fate of the ships of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and of the USS Indianapolis tragedy. I have nothing but the highest respect for the men that served back then but absolutely NOTHING but contempt for the Navy brass.
