Just got an FT710aess. I overrate the external speaker when I say it sucks. I avoided all the effort of rebuilding the AESS. I put it in a storage bin and grabbed a spare compact Yamaha bookshelf stereo speaker I bought at a yard sale. Much higher fidelity than the AESS and/or internal speaker. I operate with audio sent completely to the bookshelf speaker. I placed it on a shelf above the desktop and save the desktop space for more useful items...

It also takes longer for a speaker to burn in / wear in with just voices.a long time. You can always pump some music through them for a few hours. Peace

Made it! Thanks for sharing. Really nice audio.....now when i use the internal speaker i heard more high frequency noise.....aess 700 and 50% is the best setup. Btw i use headset almost all the time, so the quality archived with this mod on the external speaker for me is more than enough ;)

A breeze block makes a good dead enclosure, but too big for this project.I made hifi speaker encloses for stereo years ago housing the base/ mid speaker in a clay pot 12" wide drain pipe , all plastic now though, it took two strong men to lift it, certainly improved the sound. In my icom pro took out the 1 dollar speaker and replaced it with better one, best thing that happened to it, it surprises me they skimp on this when its pennies on a thousand plus radio!

Use some sound deadener on the inside walls of the speaker cabinet to lessen the ringing sound of the metal cabinet. You would think with the price of these radios the build quality would be better.

Since you have speaker design experience, how would you design the same form factor from scratch that would attached to the side of the radio (and what speaker would you put in). I think it would be interesting to mount a custom enclosure to the side.

Ordered 2 from PE. Thought I'd put away a spare. Nice work! Ever seen a solution to keeping the speaker mounted permanently so it is not a lift off to remove?

i got mine of the the main output from inside of the radio comes out of the vent of the side you loose aess its does not work on main output but loud bass audio you get

I have the FTDX101MP, sadly the external speakers are atrocious, one being in the power supply, the other being in a separate cabinet. They really do cripple the radio. I am limited with what I can do with the speaker integrated with the power supply due to cooling etc. I will do something similar with mine...

Like your results...don't think I can duplicate it..don't have the lathe! Just to clarify the final design was stuffed? Also, can you clarify if stuffed was a what kind of material or was r[the inside lined with material? Thanks for the answers!

I had the lathe, so I used it, but a jigsaw or dremel would have worked as well. In the first video of this series, I stuffed the external speaker with acoustic fiberglass.

Still a cheap driver in a tin box ,even a JBL control 1 at half the price will sound better

Yaesu have specially made speakers…….NO one has speakers of this poor quality!..

On the speaker? Absolutely. On the radio? Well, Yaesu provided a standard 3.5 mm external speaker jack, and quoting them from the manual, "The AESS is designed to function optimally with the included speaker "SP-40". It will not perform properly with other speakers." Nothing there about voiding the warranty.
