The FINAL PUSH To Our BARNDOMINIUM Build - Two More Bents To Finish Before Building Begins

In this video, we are in the final push to start our barndominium build in North Idaho, with two more bents to finish before building begins. We also get a Genie Lift Delivery and a crane delivery! So, our machines are ready to start putting up the bents for our build! We are nervous and excited and stressed and you can probably tell - maybe. Hoping ALL goes smoothly because we want a successful beginning to our build, but mostly we want a safe beginning.
We are milling our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the first slab last summer, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home.

***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!

Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"

Great progress sir. I would strongly recommend that before the crew starts any lifting operations that everyone on the site needs to have a serious pre-job safety meeting. Layout the general plan, assign tasking, identify hazardous zones, signals from 1 ground man only to the crane operator, escape routes and clear them before each pick, 2 competent persons that need to double check each other's analysis of the crane chart, including proper measurements of the actual reach needed etc etc etc. Personally I would also install at least 4 temporary diagonal braces on each bent before the pick as well as a center support attached to the top king post all the way down to the lower beam for protection against the post to truss connection being torn out/rotation. Calculations for the bent weights are easily figured. I would not however use a 12% MC weight. More like 25% MC. Just calculate how many cubic feet of your Douglas fir species type/ region and don't forget your brackets and hardware. Safety comes first and needs an appropriate plan. Especially when you don't have an excess of capacity. Stuff can go wrong in a hurry. I apologize for the comment if anyone finds it insulting.

Hi, Todd- Not insulting at all. We appreciate your insight. 😊 The good thing is that the lift went very well and no one got hurt! Erik was in charge of safety and took it very serious. He was slow and methodical. As we got a couple Benton under our belts it became more efficient and everyone settled into their roles. We started by lifting the bent a couple of feet and testing how much pressure/flex was on the rafter. It seemed solid. The spreader bar was key and how we attached to the post and not the rafter joint. Looking forward to seeing what you think about how things played out. 😁

Thank you, Pete- She ( my, wife-Beth) was definitely there, along with her sister filming. We also had my brother n law, Chris flying the drone at the end. So, there should be some great shots and not much time lapse. Most of it is live action and it looks awesome!!! 😁

Killing it man, bents look superb. Take advantage of of the stacked pile to coat w/ w/ boracare. If you want to save big, heres my homemade recipe, i use it on all my bandmill cut lumber. I purchase 100% ethylene glycol in 55 gallon drums and mix w/ timbor powder, 7lbs per 5 gallon bucket w/ hot water, either mop it on, or spray w/ garden sprayer. You can also use coolant that you get at walmart or the auto parts store but it has additives. The glycol is a carrier agent to allow deeper penetration of the borates into the beams. Its especially important to apply it when the wood is green as it penetrates.much deeper into the beam. I apply 2 coats on the beams, keep them tarped to stop the solution from drying on the surface and reapply again, afternoon to evening is best. Cant wait to see the build.

Hi, Kurt- Thank you! I hadn’t heard of boracare before your post. In our part of the country we don’t have termites. We do have Carpenter type ants but once the bark is off it doesn’t seem to be a problem. So far I have only sealed the end grain. 😁

@@ourdreaminthewoods The beams you milled have good heart content so that gives them natural pest & mold resistance. The sapwood is more prone to mold & bug activity which is what boracare helps w/. If your area is free from termites, i consider yall blessed. Down here in florida, everything attacks wood, even occasionally PT. Hope the lifts go well, best regards.

While I greatly admire the results you have attained to date (simply amazing) two things I would have done different come to mind. First and clearly most important I would have spent the funds necessary to rent a tele handler of sufficient reach (height) and capacity to fly your completly assembled bents into the floor anchor brackets, this would have allowed me to easily store/marshall the completed bents off the main slab making the erection/placement of each bent a relative piece of cake. And supporting each bent from both forks allowing for a safer DIY install using a relatively inexpierenced crew to rig lifting slings and handle tag lines. Part of cost (maybe all) would be offset by not having a crane and operator service rental and more efficient handling and assembly of bents from timbers. Secondly I question the strength of the fasterners used to attache the elements of the structual frames/bents to each other wherever a pair of gussets was was not used to strengthen the joint. I would have questioned my engineer on this issue. This structure is well designed to fit the scale of this site and I predict that finished build will look wonderful. Ray Stormont

Hi, Ray- I have seen other people use a tele handler to put up bents and it looked like it works great. Thinking about it now (after they are already up), I would have been nervous lifting from the rafter. And the way I staged the bents would have had to change. I am renting a tele handler for the SIP installation in September. We were all nervous about the connection between the post and the rafters. Do you think I should add a hurricane strip? Thanks again for the input and advice. 😊

@@ourdreaminthewoods Straps are a very easily installed cost effective way to strengthen and help withstand any future storm loads you may face in your new home. I when I can always err on the side of extra protection rather than wishing I had taken some added steps. You will see when you use the tele handler in near future that flying loads is safer for less expirenced crews using a tele handler vs. a crane. I was not very clear in that an added advantage using a telehandler is it lets you assemble bents on your flat slab then stage them away from structure only needing enough saw horses for 1 bent until needed making the placement much safer, faster, and easier. You could also cut angle iron the width of your frame chords, web members and locate them to act as brackets adding much additional shear resistance to each right angle joint not protected with a thru bolted gusset/boss. Best of all you can add these straps and or angle iron brackets after you finish erecting your structure. Ray

I did a build like what you’re doing and I can say with confidence and personal experience you’ll wish you’d picked up a 4x4 scissor lift rather than the boom lift. Boom lifts are clumsy around a build like this vs the scissor can easily move all around the footprint of the slab quickly without needing lowering and can lift purlins & all the roof substrate & roofing non of which can be done with the boom.

Hi- No perfect tool for every job. So far the boom lift is working well but it will have its limitations. I mainly planned on using it for the external framing, roofing ect. Also renting a tele handler when the SIPs go up. I will have to come up with a new plan once we start working inside. 😁
