I am currently studying material sciences and think about lighter windsurfing gear quite a lot. Thank you for sharing this with us. I've never really considered that windsurfing benefits form America's cup and was afraid that our sport might never get to its full potential because there is not enough money and demand for it...

Excellent. It'll be very light and very fast. Just watch it shrink, delaminate and go brittle in the sun (UV), not even mentioning being attacked by salt water. NOT a good idea to cut the laminated 3D sail to insert a mylar window without the same mechanical features as the laminate. In fact the mylar window is flat so it actually kills the 3D laminate shape right where it's the most needed. Americas cup technology: They only use their sails for one season - they even have new sails per race. Very deep pockets. We use these 3D sails (one piece moulded) and materials on high end regatta sail boats at a very competitive level and they explode after 2 seasons intense use. They are fast and light but they don't last. Once re-inforced properly it won't be lighter, only better, more expensive and shorter lived than a technora sail and the gain vs actual surface is negligeable. Good marketing again from NS and I suppose "the wheel turns" as they say and let the young come again with an already tried material and find the same faults. Who erased the hard disk atb North Sails ? The marketing guys no doubt - bean counters that have to bring out something "new". Hopefully they will develop it well. Amazing how Windsurfing sails have brought enormous advances to sailboats, now they should listen to sailboats experience (full circle) they are too top end and expensive. Reserved only for marketing purposes to sell mainstream models. New technology is Technora for windsurfing sails. Strong, light, repairable, somewhat 'elastic' (just enough) and far more stable on the long run. PS: Have North Sails been lying to me for all those years when I've been buying their 3D sails ? As I can remember, North Sails had already done a sail with this Kind of Technology (moulded sail), 20 year ago. I think it was called IQ 3D or Prisma... It was a race sail, 7m I think...

It is not only Severne who has membrane wave sail. Avanti was the first to introduce membrane windsurf sails to the commercial marked and they have had wave sails since 2014

actually it is about time the Big Guys have put their tech at boats down to boards. Embedded battens are not new - David Ezzy has had the "endo-batten" for years. "3-d" shaping is North Sails jargon. Again, Ezzy puts shape in a sail with seams as does Maui Sails, old style North, GA Sails, Severne Sails does, EVERYONE does it with seams. Klaas Voget sailed Simmer Sails for a long time. When I taught wndsrfng I loved the simple batten less learner sails. I can't wait to try one of these things. Ben - try some shirt collar mikes - really...

looks Mike à HOOD kevlar sails I was using in 1985 With a hifly 320!

Curious as to what it would cost to repair a batten on one of those.

A very old idea. I proposed this when I was sponsored by North in about 1987 when I was using moulded 1 tack wing sails to race with.

considering my neilpryde firefly from '08 lasted 10 years and i bought it used for 500. I don't think anybody would pay over 1000 bucks for a wave sail

Obviously aesthetically it looks ugly but I am sure after these prototypes they will design them nicely. Also I see there are no windows so it's not transparent which again its a problem. It looks like a laser sail. But I suppose we prefer function over aesthetics and let's hope that it has a better feeling

They have apparently never heard of Avanti Sails at North Sails. And Avanti Sails looks much nicer and even have windsurfing racesails. So nothing new under the windsurfing sun.
