i just noticed a connection that i didnt see befoe. Manus has been driven wild and is no more than a crazed beast when we find him, yet even in this mindless, destructive and absolutely crazy state, he recognizes the broken pendant we have and "wants" it so much that he trancendes time to pull us and the pendant into the past, ultimately sealing his fate because he cant control his want. now, in DS2 you have Manus' strongest shard beeing Nashandra, the manifestation of Manus' want, pulling all the strings because she still retains her fathers uncontrollable want. i just thought that is a very neat touch.

I guess that Kaathe probably wanted the people of Oolacile to ressurect Manus so that he could become the new Dark Lord, but they had other ideas, as the dark serpent does complain about "fools" who have failed him before.

Apologies for my tardiness. Medical school strikes again. This is a copy of my comment. I was a little late. Notes: 1. I believe Manus himself was someone of great importance in life; possibly the founder of Oolacile. Aside from his catalyst's size, like the Tin Crystallization Catalyst, it increases the power of sorceries but halves their use. In short,at the very least, Manus is a sorcerer of the same level as Logan; he only casts Dark sorceries currently, but the same could be said of the Oolacilian sorcerers spread across Oolacile Township. 2. I may have detailed this before, but I believe the Abyss Watchers arose from a cult of both Artorias and the Chosen Undead, the reasoning being the three fires ritual. There is a fourth fire that we cannot reach in game, and assets show it depicts Seath. This is unsurprising, as aside from linking the Fire, the Chosen Undead is credited with the defeat of the Four Kings, and the scattering of the Darkwraith covenant. Taken together with the Catacombs and the Undead Settlement, along with the shared Ritual Worker Hat we've cited so many times, it would seem this hero cult was used as the nucleus of a revolution within the former territories of Carthus. The buildings found half sunk in the forest are likely remnants of both Carthus and the period of Farron's independence, both of which had reason to imitate the glory days of Oolacile. There is good reason the Legion were patrons of not only Xanthous scholars, but also,one of the Twin Sages; they were chasing those glory days. Considering the Sage's Coal is guarded by a Darkwraith, that might've been their downfall. 3. At first, I was leery at the idea of the Profaned Flame being related to Alsanna( the Court Sorcerer set refers to it's previous wearers as oracles constantly) , but after some thought, I do think it's possible. As stated before, the Chaos Flame,like the First Flame, has no true location, and the Ivory King likely used the gate beneath Eleum Loyce to reach and slaughter scores of demonkind underneath Lordran. As such, the Profaned Capital could've been founded partly to follow in his footsteps, smothering another " bonfire " of the Chaos Flame, now Profaned Flame, in a specially designed Lordvessel. This may have also been why Wolnir would set his sights on them; much like the Smouldering Lake, his armies were looking for more knowledge on pyromancy. That said, I do still believe they held a relation to Lothric, thanks to the Gargoyles depicted under the Sulyvahn/ Lothric statue. 4. I may have also detailed this before, but I believe that despte her lack of direct presence in his life, Nadalia played a great part in the Iron King's rise, albeit almost completely without his knowledge. All his most competent followers show some influence on the Dark in their abilities; the Pursuer's Mist resembling the one she uses in Brume Tower; Alonne casting Dark Greatsword and guarding a Smelter Wedge; Eygil's Dance Of Fire. There is, of course, the obvious question of why she couldn't reach her beloved King. The answer,I think, is: 5. There are four gates to the Dark Chasm ingame. Of the four, three are operational; the fourth lies under the shrine where you can pray your Hollowing away, but is completely dormant, and cannot be opened. Four gates. Four sisters. 6. Headcanon, but I think Karla might be Nadalia's reincarnation. She has an aptitude for Dark pyromancy, and represents loneliness quite well with her attitude with us. 7.Regarding Gwyn, I need you to look at these quotes with some hindsight: " Once, the Lord Of Light banished Dark, and all that stemmed from humanity. And Men assumed a fleeting form. These are the roots of our world. Men are props on the stage of life, and no matter how tender, how exquisite, a lie will remain a lie!" " Men trust fully in the illusion of life...but is that so wrong? A construction, a facade, and yet, a world full of warmth and resplendence." "The fire will fade, and Dark will become a curse. Men will be free from death, left to wander eternally. " How do you gain a human form in Dark Souls 1? You burn a humanity. You cannot gain it by using a humanity; all it does is give you soft humanity in store. You can only reverse your Hollowing by burning it. " And Men assumed a fleeting form." Gwyn didn't " bind" humanity to the Flame for the sake of linking it; the only reason humans as we know them exist is because of this " binding". Without it: " Men will be free from death, left to wander eternally. " Manus' immortality, and that of his children, as well as their effect on time, is a result of this logic: " Light is time, and the reversal of it's effects is a forbidden art." Light is time.... And Man is Dark. The Dark is anathema to the laws of the world, even though it is also their source; from the Dark they came, after all. The Flame used the raw materials of the Dark to create what we know as the world. Humans, without a bond to the Flame, are creatures like Manus; beings who could wreak kingdoms and civilisations over something as simple as.... A pendant. Some desire of theirs. Anything. Humans are not content; not naturally; not without warmth. "The darkness echoes words of despair, reducing the defense of opponents. The Dark blankets the world in black. A thing of tranquility, a thing serene." To succumb to Dark is to become true to ourselves; to become " human" by casting off what we once believed to be the " human form". To become as Manus, Kaathe and their kin; beings of desire above all else, harbingers of entropy in this world of Disparity. To be defined and shackled by our desires... There is nothing less demeaning. Gwyn bound us, yes, but only because we, our ancestors, accepted that binding. Why? Because even if warmth is a lie... Is that so wrong?

Ha! You might have missed one perfect twin peaks reference opportunity but that reference you made about imperfect courage made up for it entirely. Anyway, I know our character finishes what Artorias started but I think we shouldn't discount him too much. He still confronted the dark and he doubtless must have realised he was a bit afraid. Maybe he was still the most qualified warrior to do it, despite his fear. And he still laid down his own life to protect Sif, which to me suggests true courage. Reminds me of that dialogue from the first ASOIAF book; "can someone still be brave even when he's afraid?" "That is the only time he *can* be brave"

Karla's "But I am guilty, a wretched child of the Abyss" comment has always puzzled me because all humans are wretched children of the Abyss, something Karla actually knows herself. Then there are hints that Zullie and Alva are her parents which throws a spanner into the works that Karla is Manus' child, unless we consider grandchild as acceptable. While I don't disagree with the idea that Karla is referring to Manus when she says she's a wretched child of the Abyss, I feel like the lore community hasn't exhausted the other possibilities with what it could really mean. One possibility could be that she's guilty of heretical abyssal sorceries, which makes even more sense when she says she's no different to the monstrosities in the Profaned Capital. Perhaps she was one that didn't mutate.

The abyss watchers absolutely did not learn anything from Artorias. They also fell to the abyss, although they ironically did far more to fight the abyss than Artorias ever did before succumbing. It's why their eyes glow red and they fight each other. They vowed to stamp out the abyss, wherever it emerged, and so they uphold their vows forever, until the ashen one comes along and encourages their return to the throne
@TheHonoredMadman
@TheHonoredMadman 6 ай бұрын
I totally agree, Of course they fell to the abyss, they were( much like artorias) dealing with something outside their comprehension. I only meant that they learned to destroy kingdoms before they fell to the abyss as opposed to artorias who went in blind after the shit had hit the fan in oolacile

@@t-mango2491The sword description doesnt implicitly say she drains the strength of the ivory king,the ivory king was a mortal afterall and could also be old age.Alsanna has an atipical relationship with the king unlike any of the fragments of Manus,she had no reason to guard the old chaos after the ivory king basically became bbq and also to use her ice powers to contain it.She willingly accepts the souls of Loyce knights you save from the old chaos to comfort them.These 3 reasons alone make me really doubt that she was like Nashandra or Nadalia.

@@Trimondius I was not arguing alsanna is not a good person, but Including the Eleum loyce description “Eleum Loyce Curved sword forged from the soul of Alsanna. The enigmatic Alsanna quietly found a place at the Ivory King's side, and when his strength was fully drained, he conferred this sword, inscribed with the name of the land, to her.” And the chime of want description “…After taking their shapes, they courted monarchs of considerable power, which they desired to make their own. “ the word “drained” implies the act was deliberate and the chime of want indicates that children of the dark do this, it isn’t believed by many to be an act of malice on her part, but she still did in fact drain his strength

The humans have it, and the humans jump into the age of darkness or the age of unknown. Gwen is the typical God archetype who knows all. Solaire seeks truth or knowledge. On and on. So Manus is the body or is the furtive pygmy himself from the opening, how did he become such a twitsted and monster in his form once 'awoken' or bought back from the dead
@alyseleem2692
@alyseleem2692 6 ай бұрын
Firstly,we do not know if he is the Furtive Pygmy; he is "a Primeval Man", not "THE Primeval Man". In fact, a better term for the pygmy would be "primordial". That said, it is still possible, and certainly less terrifying than the idea that Manus was just a random guy and there were once thousands of humans just like him. Secondly, the "human form" as you know it is false. In order to attain it, you must burn a Humanity; in Aldia's own words, this is but a "fleeting form"; a false image. In other words, without the bindings of Fire, Manus' form changed to reflect his state of mind, accompanied by the emergence of the Abyss.

While the details of the pygmies are a bit scarce, it's almost certain that Manus was not one of them. Whether Manus was a creation of them, like Gwynivere or the Silver Knights, or was just bathed in power by them is also a bit unclear. But, from the little we get of what the Pygmies are, mostly from DS3, Manus ain't one of them.
@alyseleem2692
@alyseleem2692 6 ай бұрын
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 I find your certainty in such a notion concerning. For one, the term used for both Manus and the Pygmies( specifically, the Ringed Knights' descriptions) is the same in Japanese ( " ancient human"), and Manus' tomb shows his original resting place as a depression in the ground, shaped like the general impression of a person. According to his own soul, Manus was " certainly" a human once, and as is stated, he is specifically an " ancient human"; a pygmy. Before he was dug out of his grave, he likely looked like one, too. The only difference? He is, apparently, unsealed. He has no visible " sign".

Not only is DaS2 about the shards of Manus, but also Lindelt acting as heirs to the primordial serpents - the Watchdragon Parma is found at Dragon Shrine (base game) or Cathedral of Blue (SotFS) which are both locations linked to Lindelt (places with Monastery and Dragon Charms, respectively). "Seek the King" said by the Emerald Herald is a pretty direct reference to Kingseeker Frampt (the Herald was created by Aldia on behalf of Lindelt). Lindelt, like the Sable Church, are a secret society above and beyond the False Monarchs and would-be Lords.

23:36 she teachs you *Pyromancy* and you find her in the Profound Capital where the fire was linked in a different way....but its where Yhorm and Sigmyr are from. Theory! She linked the flame or had something to do with it and led to her being imprisoned and caused Yhorm to have to link the fire.

Chester doesnt seem to have much of story outside of being an amoral stranger in a strange land who also likes to be a merchant from time to time when hes not attempting to rob protagonists

I think that Chester received, found or stole the Broken Pendant himself at some point in the future, long after the Chosen Undead's journey, which is why Manus also dragged him into Oolacile's time period.

_Oh, its just another lore video on a dead horse topic, thats... _*_dissapointing._* I was kinda hoping this would be a video essay on the consequence of AoTA on Fromsoftware's game design going forward and how the games became less experimental and more "Safe" as a result, with linear level design and boring uninspired boss fights in open flat arenas that could be interchangeable at random for all the difference they make, bosses that only exist to flex the art departments model and animation skills rather than creating unique and innovative experiences while basically doing nothing with the overall combat mechanics except gradually increasing APM with every installment.

It bothers me rather substantially that DS3 Retcons the origin of the Abyss and downplays the significance of both Manus & the Children of Dark *hard*. Not only do they insist that the Abyss has existed since the foundation of the Ringed City, they seriously mean to tell us that Humanity has been literally weaponisng it for eons? Well before the time of Manus and the Children of Dark? Entities that are scarcely even referenced??? The biggest offender in regards to the lore however is Aldritch... apparently the pathetic pile of sludge obtained a level of Darkness inaccessible to humanity; a Darkness so intense that it was dubbed "The Deep". Except that doesn't make any sense??? Do they mean to imply a pile of goo has achieved a level of Dark beyond the literal Father of the Abyss? Beyond the beings literally born from the Darkness of Humanity? Yeah, no. Inconsistent writing is garbage.

Apologies for my tardiness. Medical school strikes again. Notes: 1. I believe Manus himself was someone of great importance in life; possibly the founder of Oolacile. Aside from his catalyst's size size, like the Tin Crystallization Catalyst, it increases the power of sorceries but halves their use. In short,at the very least, Manus is a sorcerer of the same level as Logan; he only casts Dark sorceries currently, but the same could be said of the Oolacilian sorcerers spread across Oolacile Township. 2. I may have detailed this before, but I believe the Abyss Watchers arose from a cult of both Artorias and the Chosen Undead, the reasoning being the three fores ritual.
