Oh yeah. Latter day Rogers fans who weren't around or didn't remember the 1960s found it hard to believe that he cut this slice of psychedelia in 1967 (song went to #5 in 1968) The next year they went to a country-rock format.

Long way from Islands in the stream, huh? I was born August of 69 and do not remember this song. I would assume I've been in the same room that it was playing at one time in my life. I just didnt realise it was this legend. Is Kenny Roger's most peoples favorite artist? No, but he is an absolute legend of the business. My mom and Aunts thought he was a "hunk". I seem to remember Kenny Roger's was always in the rotation on vacation trips. Always. God damn Lucille. Lol

Please stop the confusion, you're referring to different songs! Mickey Newbury wrote Just Dropped In The Bee Gees wrote Islands in the Stream. They originally wrote it for Marvin Gaye (who ended up not using it AFAIK) in an R&B style, but later changed it for the Kenny Rogers album. Not so sure they actually used the song themselves before the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton version, as the first version recorded by the Bee Gees was from a live performance in November 1997 and a subsequent studio version was released in 2001. The first cover versions released appears to be with lyrics in Swedish (1983) and Danish (1984)

Many years ago, my girlfriend, now wife, was a C&W fan. She came over one day when I was playing my First Edition album and this song was playing. She asked me what kind of druggie music was I listening to? I told her to wait for the next track which was "Ruby" and she couldn't believe one of her country heroes was once a psychedelic rock star.
