You really nailed it here, Mike. Incredibly vivid characters supported by dialogue that features a distinctive voice for each character. Brilliant action sequences. The best humor in the genre. Great video on the book. For me "The bad" was the first book in the trilogy, as it was very slow and it feels like going nowhere. For example Jezal preparation for the tournament takes way too long. However the second and third books more than make up for it.

I've been listening to you and Moid rave about Joe Abercrombie for a while now, but I didn't want to start a trilogy right now, so I read Red Country. I didn't know it was in the same universe as the trilogy until after I was finished it. While I thought it was really good, and I enjoyed his writing, I don't think that he is as good as GRRM. I'm 63 years old now, and I have been reading for nearly all my life, literally thousands of books, and George is the best author in the last 20 years or so. That being said, I am going to start the first trilogy this week. I want to thank you and Moid as I never would have known about this author without r two.

I started reading Abercrombie around when I started college, when I was... I think 19 to 20. I immediatly fell in love with it. Ironically it was also my first (at least I think so) time reading Grimdark (I had fallen off reading when I was a child and the last book I had read a few years before that was Metro 2033) and the humour absolutely spoke to me. Every time a chapter ended I was hoping the next one would be from Glokta's POV.

Definitely read the stand-alones if you want to dive into the sequel trilogy because I read the first three books a year and a half ago, pushed straight to sequel trilogy as it came out and forgot family member connections and relationship ties. Plus I felt so left out of the world when I couldn’t realize what the hell was happening. DNF it, but am continuing to buy the books to eventually do a full reread and include the stand-alones.

7:54 I think you make a great point contrasting him with mark Lawrence. I think the fact that while the 1st law characters are alot of things, Bat-shit crazy isnt really one of them, and i think that helps to really ground a fantasty character in a fantastical world in a more believable reality for the reader. Its so easy to make a book loaded with a bunch of jackals from RR, but its low hanging fruit and an entire book filled with them keeps you at arms lengths as far as believable story plot.

I read the original First Law trilogy for the first time earlier this year. Didn't love it, didn't hate it, though I am interested enough to continue on. I did like the character of Logan, he actually reminded me of Wolverine, especially when he went into his "berserker rage." I wonder if Wolverine was a bit of an inspiration for Ninefingers. And there was improvement in the series, especially with character development, but I didn't care for the ending.

Have you tried Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson? It also has fantastic character development. I've read the first two trilogies. Want to reread them so I can then read his latest books in that world (four of them, IIRC).

I'm really proud to say that I got who the big bad was in Book 2 and then book 3 started to "hint at" and I felt it super obvious, but I think it's one of those things that if you're not aware, they don't mean much, but if you know, they seem glaring obvious. Also, let's be honest, for such a brutal world and morally bankrupt characters, Abercrombie's comedy is almost slapstick and it just works. Best Served Cold has comedic moments that I've only seen in Wes Anderson's movies and other moments very close to Tarantino. Amazing.

I was keen to read First Law to see if I liked grimdark because I don't think I've ever tried this genre. I wonder what you would recommend if not this trilogy to get into grimdark?

Overall story I think first trilogy is still the best for me, but if you go book for book rating then The Heroes and Best Served Cold is up there for me with Before They are Hanged. Still have to read second trilogy.

I'm bummed by how much I really struggled with the first 2 books. I was so excited for this series thanks to how hyped up it is. Abercrombie is a great writer, that's for sure, I just simply couldn't stand all the characters not named Glokta and Ninefingers.

I genuinely think that Best Served Cold and the sequel trilogy for First Law are actually as good if not better than the first trilogy. So I disagree there I guess.

I still think the most quotable character for me is Tom Cullen from The Stand..."M-O-O-N, that spells First Law"
