wonder why the Civil War didn't begin with the firing on the Star of the West because it was a Union vessel. Loved that inclusion of the red line marker on the flagpole. Wish the fort would have been rebuilt to its original height before the war. Great video. 👍

In 1861 my 3x Great-Grand Uncle at the time Captain David Rumph Jones who was on General Beauregards Staff is said to have delivered the final terms of surrender to Anderson and lowered the US flag from the fort. Fast forward two years to 1863 my 3x Great- Grandfather of the 11th South Carolina Company H was sent to defend Fort Sumter with the rest of his regiment. The duty of the Fort Sumter garrison by this time in the war was to show the flag every day and be prepared to repel any amphibious Landing the Yankees might launch at night. His regiment was there and is noted for being the regiment in charge of the fort when the powder magazine exploded killing eleven. So I could only imagine the stories he had. One letter I found read, “On October 2 the final day in the fort, 68 rounds were fired at the fort. 55 of the rounds struck the fort. One member of the 11th was wounded when he was struck in the face by a flying brick.”

That’s some great information to have in your family and that letter must be amazing to have. I can only imagine what it was like being bombarded for those long periods.

One spot for the ferry is right downtown near the fort Sumter visitor center. It’s right next to the Charleston aquarium. Another spot for the ferry is across the harbor at patriots point. That location is right next to the USS Yorktown (aircraft carrier)

Hey they took all the flags down! I’m not a southerner but why erase the visible history of this historic place! It’s to bad what’s happening to the history of western countries!
