10:35 Learn more about cod liver oil!
Today we’re going to talk about the first sign of vitamin A deficiency: nyctalopia. Nyctalopia is night blindness.
The active form of vitamin A is called retinol. Retinol is needed for peripheral vision and to see in dim light.
Beta-carotene is the precursor to retinol-it needs to convert into retinol to become active.
Thinking that you’re getting enough of the active form of vitamin A because you’re consuming beta-carotene can cause you to become vitamin A deficient.
It’s important to consume the active form of vitamin A to support your eyes and your overall health.
Foods rich in vitamin A (retinol):
• Cod liver oil
• Grass-fed liver
• Raw cheese
• Butter (raw)
• Cream (raw)
• Egg yolk
Benefits of vitamin A:
• It helps you see in the dark
• It prevents dry eyes
• It helps the eyes compensate
• It helps prevent rough, scaly, or dry skin
• It supports the immune system and helps prevent infections
• It supports healthy mucus membranes and your internal skin
• It helps support childhood development
Top causes of vitamin A deficiency:
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Polymorphism
• Pasteurization
• Low-fat diets
• Liver damage
• Lack of bile
• Gut damage

I had an office job for over 24 years and it was killing me and my vision was horrible. I decided to humble myself and get a job with UPS as a seasonal driver and I have to admit, being outside all day and after the sun goes down and looking at the numbers on houses to drop off packages has improved my vision significantly. I can clearly see at night now after a month of working there; not to mention I lost 14 lbs. On top of my diet, eating my keto and vitamins, especially vitamin A. I am a female, age 49.

When doing nutrition consulting, in the absence of bloodwork and the specialized equipment, I'd ask a simple question: "If you go into a dark movie theater, how long does it take your eyes to adjust to the darkness--5 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds or a minute?" If the answer is more than 15 seconds, there was a good chance they were vitamin A deficient. I had one occasion to be a bit arrogant when a woman came into my health food store. After greeting her, I asked her, "Have you considered that the reason you get chest colds is because of your low vitamin A levels?" It was a jaw-dropping moment for her. She had come during the evening wearing sunglasses, and I noticed her skin that showed signs of inflammation. When asked why she wore sunglasses even when it was dark, she said she thought it looked cool. After she had taken vitamin A for a couple of weeks, she returned for more; her skin looked better, and she was not wearing sunglasses! When asked why, she said she thought it was better for people to see her eyes when communicating. No one's brain is going to spontaneously relate sensitivity to bright lights and glare to a lack of vitamin A, but will instead resolve the "cognitive dissonance" by a comfortable rationalization such as looking cool. We had an extended conversation regarding the multiple roles vitamin A plays with vision, skin health, and immune response of the lungs and mucus membranes (your "skin" on the inside).

Vitamin a and vitamin D fight a bit for dominance. It’s good to get a blood test to make sure you’re supplementing the right thing and not getting a toxic amount of the wrong thing. It would actually make sense for me to have a vitamin a deficiency for three reasons beyond the difficulty seeing in the dark while young. One I don’t eat vitamin a rich foods. Two I heavily supplement with vitamin D. I never drink alcohol, yet my liver could actually be better for my age. Again, even some pharmacist will test your blood to see if you have deficiencies in an area.

I started taking cod liver oil because I watched one of your previous videos regarding it. I was having a really bad case of dry eyes. I kept artificial tears in my purse and had a few around the house like that's how bad it was even bought 3 warm mist humidifiers. I've tried omega 3 fish oil in the past but would break out in a rash so I was truly hesitant on trying cod liver oil, and the artificial tears was losing its touch.... But after giving the cod liver oil a try my eyes feel so much better now. I haven't had to use any artificial tears. Thank you so much 💓

My so-called vitamin A deficiency signs turned about to be caused by low zinc status. The metabolism of vitamin A into retinaldehyde and retinoic acid, the active forms, requires zinc at each metabolic step. I needed Zinc picolinate before I was able to absorb and correct properly.

@@shantube75 And are you aware of the research associating moderate to high vitamin A status with weight gain, obesity, and diabetes? Vitamin A is a nutrient that is rising in dietary consumption and fortification. Vitamin A has a counterbalancing relationship with vitamin D. My vitamin D would not go up to a good level until I stopped vitamin A. Presumably zinc is being used up in it's role as a vitamin A detoxifier. Explains a lot. I followed Weston A Price Foundation dietary advice for many years. I used to joke that WAPF diet was the "gain weight diet". Mind blowing for sure.

I've been having periodic blurred vision or poor vision since the last few months . I've seen two ophthalmologists . They found nothing wrong on examination and I was prescribed drops for dry eyes. However, that has not really helped with focus beyond the feeling of relief from dryness. I am 57, not diabetic, and my TSH is normal. The ophthalmologist and my GP were unable to explain why I am having less than desirable vision. A Vitamin-A deficiency seems to be a plausible reason . I'll explore that angle. Thanks a ton. I read an article when my three children were very young about the children of Alaska having excellent eyesight until they started them in kindergarten at five years of age instead of six years of age. The children began to have to wear glasses. Obviously too much close up eye strain at too young of an age! The article recommended for children to take a lot of breaks during the day, go outside and try to find a squirrel in the tree or a bird in the distance and specifically practice using their long distance vision. I did this with my three children while I homeschooled them and none of them to this day wear glasses. They are all grown adults in their 30s. 😊

I 100% have had this and what I did was I'd practice focusing on a close object in the foreground then background and repeat, then after a few days, would practice focusing on a further object, then a further object. I never thought it could be because of a lack of vitamin a but everything lines up, I figured it was because I was looking at screens to much and the muscles in my eyes where weakening.

I had a lot of trouble for years driving at night. Been low carb 13 years now. Eat lots of butter and eggs. But doing way better now. Better than both of my children. One is vegan and has the most problems. The other has a medical condition were she must limit vitamin A. So if they visit, the old lady does the night driving at night. Many people can not convert beta carotene to retinal A.

Ahh yes, rat milk… The name alone floods my brain with warm memories of Christmas’ past. Mum would make the best Rat-nog and there was always a big plate of mouse butter cookies and a big warm glass of rat milk set out for Santa. Little Timmy would always drink it straight from the teet. We’d catch him in the root cellar mouthing the new years rats well before they were ready! He always asked for another drink before heading out into the night. Tis the season to drink rat’s milk! Happy Holidays to Dr. Berg, Karen and crew!

Don’t know about USA , but in the UK you can’t get vitamin A as a direct supplement because somebody ( possibly European authorities as usual ) got it banned. You used to be able to buy it in capsule form , just like any other fat soluble, oil based supplements. I think they said they wanted to save the fish from which the supplement is extracted. Doesn’t seem to weigh up when there is still Omega 3 and cod liver oil supplement still available.

Since I’m farsighted and need reading glasses, going outside for a nice long walk looking into the distance works wonders to relax my eyes . . . but for my extremely nearsighted adult children (24 & 22) they either wear contacts or glasses, so how can they get any relief especially from wearing these visual-aides all day long? Also Dr. Berg, can you please talk about floaters, why some people have them and how to get rid of them? Thanks a bunch for all you do! 🤓

I've studied health issues since 2010 and find it amusing that when some doctors have no answer they fall back on using genetics or hereditary to bail them out. I know now that it isn't their fault because they're not taught this in their medical education. It is too bad that they all do not continue educating themselves as Dr. Berg has done.

I was having trouble with my eyes, especially my right eye. When I would blink I would notice strange persistence of vision spots that would appear for an instant. I was having trouble with car headlights and also street lights. Also my right eye was feeling some minor soreness. I went to the eye clinic and they gave my eyes a complete examination. They told me this was normal for someone in his mid 50's, and that I didn't have glaucoma, a detached retina, macular degeneration or any other problem. I went away sort of relieved but they offered me no solutions. Obviously I needed to solve my own problem. It didn't take me more than an hour to so searching online to realize that I needed some Vitamin A. I actually ran out and bought some beta carotene and started taking it. My problems began to resolve within a few days. No more soreness, no more blinking visual effects, and no more persistence of vision problems. The eye specialist never mentioned nutritional solutions to me. I will never go back there again. Since then I have successfully helped two other people who were experiencing eye trouble by telling them about vitamin A.

As far as I'm aware we don't get raw milk in Australia. I live above a dairy and he's not allowed to sell me his fresh raw milk. All milk and milk products have to be pasteurised. The only milk that's allowed is non homogenised milk where the cream sits on top of the milk. So it's cod liver oil for me 🤢.

I went to a eye “Doctor” and when I sat down this is exactly what he said. “Let me first go over a few MYTHS with you. Watching TV, computer or a cellphone doesn’t affect your vision. Your vision doesn’t get worse, either you are born with good vision or you genetically have vision issues.” 🧢🧢🧢 As soon as I told my mom that she was like that’s complete BS! Seriously, I had perfect vision. Wanted to be a Air Force pilot. Now I need glasses or everything is blurry. This was “Doctor”…. I totally get what Dr Berg says about them being trained to think a certain way. NEVER TRUST WHAT ANYONE SAYS BLINDLY (pun haha) ESPECIALLY “DOCTORS”! Research and think for yourself! They just regurgitate BS from medical school. He was a older Dr also. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Poor kale always gets a bad rep when measured in cups by Eric. Why don't we use one measurement when comparing. I mean one cup of kale is super light, and hardly contains any kale unless you compress it, so maybe 454 cups of kale is not that much different than 40 pounds of whatever else...but i guess the point was it's hard to get enough of A in you, unless you eat livers like X File...

I really like when you talk of precursor bioavailability. Could you also make a habit of mentioning half life and stacking/reserve? Like if you are carrots every day without fail surely you wouldn't need 20lbs every day for the effects to remain present? And based on pill intake, how long do stuff remain in your body for instance i know with magnesium of you take more than your body can absorb you pee/poop the extra. And when it comes to 5htp there is a maximum speed of conversation into serotonin so there's no point taking more than needed either. Would love these details in your videos about all nutrients and minerals :3

@carolcole570 7 ай бұрын
@@di4085 Thank you for asking. Labs were done on Vitamin A. I was normal. This started a huge war between me and my Hepatologist because of what Vitamin A can do to harm the liver. I had started going to a new P.C., since mine retired. I told her that I wanted to “ try taking a small amount of Vitamin A, and that if she agreed, we could do Vitamin A Labs every 4 months, to see what the affects will be and whether I am to stay on the amount, lower it, or stop “. So, this is how we left it. The night of 11-6-2023, I started taking Vitamin A daily. After that one day in Opthalmology where my eyes responded soooooo positively, I have not had any further response. However, my gums appear to be responding and also my nails are getting stronger. So, I am encouraged……the doctors are waiting to pounce…….and I am butt-headedly still taking it every night. For ME……the goal is getting my eyes in better shape. For the doctors, THEIR goal is to have a moment of pure glee as they prove me wrong. Et voil’a…….
