I really can't talk about groundwork enough, it is the defining training and education that you can impart on your horse that will keep you and your horse safer and happier. Groundwork is limitless too as you can do every exercise at different speeds, in different environments with different obstacles and all kinds of things to acclimate your horse to. Good groundwork skills can improve your relationship in so many ways and make things like leading from one place to another or getting in a trailer a far more peaceful process.
In this video I talk about the first three basic steps of groundwork that I believe you must have. I will reference this video in other videos and this sets the groundwork for all other groundwork and saddlework! I can genuinely say that if you can master this, get more out of your horse than you can imagine and you and your horse will be safer for it.
The three things I talk about and demonstrate in this video are having your horse be with you. Without this, you can't get the rest, so this is first. The second is to get a direction movement. In this case I demonstrate a circle around me. The third movement is the "one rein stop" from the ground.
From here we will move on to the back up, direction change and yielding while moving, but that's in the next video coming soon!
Here are the next three steps: • The Next Three Steps o...

Really enjoy your videos. Thank you for the time you put into them. Question about groundwork. I moved to a new boarding stable recently. The outdoor arena at my old barn had dirt footing. The "arena" I have to work in now is a grass field. Like most horses, mine is an eating machine. I feel like I am spending most of my time trying to get his head up out of the grass. Any suggestions for keeping him focused on what we are doing and get his mind (and head) off the grass ?

+Joy Shepherd thank you very much! You're welcome and I'm glad they are enjoyable. This is a super common problem that has a simple, but maybe not easy, answer. This requires piles of consistency where at any point you are together you don't allow him to look off or be distracted. You also want to catch him before he even gets his head below his shoulder, essentially stopping the activity before it can start. If they are really persistent then I would do enough to move their feet in some direction. Literally just keeping them on their toes so that it stops occurring to them to try to eat. They can catch on to this quick but it requires consistency over time to make this stick.

Hi great videos and really help a lot. Just wondered how you get the to move their hind end away? My lad just keeps walking? Thanks

@StableHorseTraining 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Not sure if you watched it yet, but I gave an in depth response to this question here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ldt7bMV_mpuZpJc.html The shorter version though is that you have to block the forward movement and then reset and go back to asking for just the hind end. If you're doing it on the circle exercise then really go towards their hip and bump the nose in while blocking forward movement. Let me know if that makes sense or not...

You're welcome for the video, I'm glad you like it and found it useful. For your problem, the way I see it, if a horse isn't moving it's feet when and where and how fast I ask for it, then I don't have the level of respect I require to stay safe. It's an absolute requirement for me that if I ask a horse to step to the side, back, forward, change pace and stop, then it should be done in a very timely manner. The reason I think this is two things: first is that I need to stay safe around them and keep other people safe around them. In turn, they stay safer too. If I can't move them where I need them, there is likely going to be trouble one day. The second thing is that I NEVER see a lead horse have trouble moving a lower horse. The lower horse is very respectful of the lead horse and moves when, where and how is expected of it. So, being that my position is the tippy top of all the horses, I should have that. It doesn't mean I need to be "the boss" and show any horses that I'm the leader, I just need to be in that position in the case I need it. So, they then have to separate that out to where I may not have them do anything around me and they can do what they want, but when I need something then they respectfully respond. Which means in the end that you're going to need to be louder. The saying goes "do as much as you have to but as little as you can". So if you were doing groundwork and were swinging the rope to get the horse moving and it won't move, then that rope has to really get whistling around. I'd reserve having to whack them somewhere to the very last but it's not out of my options. I always rub that area though if I have had to do it and then start back the exercise to just trying to ask for what I want quietly. It generally takes just minutes to work that stuff out when they are sure that you really mean what you're asking for. Otherwise they get unresponsive and disrespectful to your requests. Whew.... that was a long one. Hope it helps.

I like what I do in this video a bit better: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iciopbxpl7LYeWw.html I'll use a stick/flag if I don't want to use the rope or I have the horse more at the end of the lead rope and want something else to pick up my energy.

Thank you so much for doing this video series. Any chance you could explain what to do when your horse isn’t calm or is sort of hot? My girl will do the circles but seems to dart off and run the whole time and it seems to take forever to get her to settle down enough to work like Luke does.

You're welcome Lisa :) Yes, I can definitely talk about that and can induce that in one of the horses here. A good video to watch might be this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrODnMmDxJqmcas.html where I talk about walking around with a nervous horse. The main thing I think about is to change directions when they get too hoppy. I recently worked with a 3 year old OTTB and he was really off the wall. The goal is always to stay calm and bring some peace to their world so they will hopefully pick up on that and manage better. I'll definitely talk about this more. Thanks for the request!

Thank you. I really like the way you come across in all your videos. Very easy going and down to earth. These videos should help me I hope. My girl has been in her smaller area with the other horses for only about two weeks now and is starting to already get more attitude. Of course the cold temps don’t help much either.
@StableHorseTraining
@StableHorseTraining 6 жыл бұрын
Well that's very kind of you, thank you. Things will definitely work out, time and patience are the main things to concentrate on. It's easy to not have enough of one or the other or both, when that happens, nothing else matters anymore.

You’re welcome. She’s becoming sort of disrespectful and pushy and I’m a bit worried that being in the smaller area is going to completely ruin her and she will be a complete basket case and too hard to handle come spring.
@StableHorseTraining
@StableHorseTraining 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about that too much. Keep doing some groundwork, the second video is out now: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJqHrbxondOwc3U.html and get the feet moving when and where you want them. Small space or big makes no difference and I hope the next few videos I have planned can give you some more ideas on how to continue on with the basics. Once you have connected to their mind, it doesn't matter what the body is, in fact, you'll find more and more that you'll want your horse to have as much energy as possible so as not to run out while you're with them.

Thank you! Sort of, it's a rehabilitation and training facility. Some horses come with physical issues, some don't. They all need a bit of help with their confidence and general education in regards to human requests and objects that will be in their life.

@StableHorseTraining
@StableHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, it's a common problem where the horse doesn't consider what you are doing to be of much of an influence as you'd like, or they just don't understand what you want. Both require more assertion. If you have a bag on a stick or a flag on a stick or whatever on a stick that worries your horse then I'd start with that maybe. Using the lead rope and swinging it works well if you're good at it and accurate. You can hit the ground with it, if you put on a thick jacket you can hit your jacket with it to make some noise. Essentially you're trying to add more energy to your "drive". As always, start small, if you make them move their feet a little, pet them, reassure them and start again from scratch. We want to be able to use lots of energy when required, but we'd like not to stay at that. In time it will be just a subtle change in your arm, stance, breathing etc. It's amazing, horses are absolute expert observers. First though, they have to know you mean it when you ask it and the communication has to be very clear to reduce worry and concern and effectively tell them what to do. Keep in mind that it's the release of that energy that teaches. Timing is everything :) Let me know how that goes!

For whatever it's worth, I never tie my horses in the trailer, so maybe you don't need to? Some horses find that very very scary. Luke is an appendix, so I'm told. Not sure if he is more arabian than thoroughbred though.. he's kinda gangly and odd looking in his body, hard to place him.

Maybe this one is too simple for you and you need something more advanced? I wouldn't watch a video meant for kids on math if I was working on algebra. Something to consider before popping on to provide an insult or criticism is that this might be meeting the needs of a beginner. Horse work can be very slow work requiring lots of patience. If a beginner can't even take the time to learn something slow then they'll likely be looking for a fast fix for everything else too.
