On the surface, The Fisherman's Daughter is a fresh fish market, eatery, deli, and gift shop located in Grand Marais, Minnesota. As we dig deeper, this story starts to pull on the threads of quite a few other fascinating themes. Co-founders Abby and Kate have taken their experience from running other businesses to create a fantastic environment for eating and shopping. Abby brings generations of experience from being from a long line of commercial fishermen and Kate brings her eclectic culinary experience to create a successful business model that is fun to explore. They sell fresh fish from Lake Superior and also partner with a fourth-generation smoke house in Port Wing, Wisconsin to sell their smoked fish.
This part of the story takes us to Everett's Fisheries on the South Shore of the Big Lake to meet the family behind that operation that has ties back to the late 1890's when Alick Johnson came over to this region from Sweden to fish the Great Lakes. Alick's son Everett started smoking fish in the 1950's. The torch was passed to Everett's son Eric, who is featured in this film, and then Eric passed the torch to his sons. One of his sons (Jeff) now smokes the fish and the other son catches the fish.
These are the types of connections and symbiotic relationships we search for.
The Fisherman's Daughter is a great place to spend some time in the Grand Marais area. They make amazing fish and chips and have an incredible deli and market with local, regional, and national offeringss. Take all of that and add an amazing gift store and a deck that overlooks the Big Lake...and you've got a very noteworthy afternoon! Definitely one of our favorite spots on the North Shore.
