On this episode of the guru podcast, we have our podcast host Matt Godfrey, in for a special world championship show. He recounted his recent journey fishing with the England team out in Italy for the 67th Nations Coarse Angling World Championship 2021.
Podcast producer, Toby Clarke, kept up with Matt throughout his entire trip. He followed Matt through his preparation at home, to driving across Europe and even during his practice week out on the match length, the River Mincio, in Pescierra Del Garda, Italy.
After a rollercoaster of a match, the England team ended up with a well-deserved bronze medal finish. Matt then came back into the studio to tell the entire story behind the team’s amazing achievement.
In this episode, you will get an exclusive insight into what it is like to fish for England, both on and off the bank! We also take a first look into the match fishing mind of our host Matt, and we find out exactly why he is one of the most naturally talented anglers on the bank today.

Its difficult to attract the sponsors when there's next to no coverage. Our team England lads are incredible and I'm mega proud of them, but when you're having to scroll through Italian and Croatian fb pages for the odd snippets of info it says it all really. This is our national team ffs, fishing the World Championships, there were some live streams all day, but it was from the golden reel or something, so so disappointing! Anyway well done Matt and the boys. Always Team England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We all know how enthusiastic Matt is, but to see the emotion when he spoke about his grandad and the toy lizard.....that is PASSIONE (Italian). The Fab Four (Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La-La and Po) will be ecstatic that they got a mention. Thanks for the podcast, the coverage, and HUGE congrats for coming back with the medal. I've been to 2 WC's (Belgium in 2004 and Italy in 2008) and know how hard the whole team works.

Awesome Matt. You're a legend. The world needs more Matt Godfrey's. I find it incredible that the England team consistently performs at international level, yet there is a lack of tv coverage and sponsors. They should be queuing up to cover your transport accommodation and expenses etc, and allowing to focus more time on prep.

Love the podcasts I saw the one with Dean Barlow it reminded me of my old match fishing days I remember fishing willow Park on a skanderbourg ko match against all the major teams at the time and we drew between Dorking and Essex County I was between Bob nudd and Steve gardener brilliant day .

Wouldn't it be good if we could get a SKY Camera crew follow the England team from the start of the journey all way through the tournament. It could be a 6 part series. A Brilliant watch, and a great achievement for the Team England, and Matt personally, great guy and passion for angling is infectious. Totally agree about creating more events based on international methods of angling, I would love to learn slider, bolo, sticky maggs,etc. Would be great if we could bring them methods into UK angling more. Definitely think a big money final FishOMania style, fishing international rules, natural venues, and international methods would be a great idea. 👍 The world championship should get the same coverage, if not more than big money finals, in my opinion. These are the best angler's in the world. Awesome achievement Matt, Well done mate.👍

Wow.... just wiping away the tears. Toby, excellent pod cast, was looking for some coverage on this event as the World Championship has always been important to me since Ashurst, John Dean, Dave Thomas, Nudd, Brogden, Roper etc. The Clegg era! Any hoo, well done Matt, fantastic. Great ideas for the future, I think Phil Brisco could be an assett in selling the 2 day International "Golden Float" Event. One last thing... is it just me, but since Will Raison's Pod cast is every one saying Yeah yeah yeah when agreeing with someone? Loving your work guys. Slide On.

HI Matt, thanks for the compliments to my country. The venue is very difficult also for us that we fish quite often. This year was even harder then normal with a very few fishes caught. But you are wrong about the size of SCARDOLA. The maximum size is well over the 6 onces that you think, they can grow up to 3 pounds. Congratulation for your fishing achievement and the Podcast!!! When you come back to Italy I'll take you to the Tevere river, temple of Chubbs.....

Really enjoyed Matts insight into international fishing….I have an old penny in my fishing box dated 1929 …the year my Dad was born…and he gave it to me a few years ago …🙂

I'm surprised the team did not know about the light line and strung out rig. This was one of the rigs I used in the E.P.F.Champs on this venue in 2016. In fact the very first put using this rig I caught a 3 pound chub. As part of our prep we got info from Alan Scotthorne who won individual gold on this venue in 1996. Anyway, its a tough venue and the team had an excellent result.

Great podcast guys, really enjoyed it, sitting here editing an article for Germany whilst typing lol I lived in Germany for 37 years and fished a lot of matches there, and in Holland and Denmark where most of the matches are float only, unless stated otherwise. I think you are correct in saying that we are miles behind other nations with regards to not fishing enough of these style of matches, which is making it hard for new talent to shine through on the methods needed to compete at world level. I have been following the world champs since I was a young teen in the 90's, and have nboticed that since commercials have come to the fore, that the results have slipped over the decades. I am not saying that commercials are detrimental to the future of match fishing, but if the pros fish the commercial scene to earn a living, as some of them have done in the past, as there are a lot of anglers who are excellent at both styles of fishing. It's the youngsters I am more concerned about, how are they meant to learn all of these tactics needed? By having more media coverage of the world champs, that would help massiviely, but obviously, fishing is not as popular as tennis, golf or whatever TV channels want to market and cash in on the adverts with.

Hello thank you for the time and commitment you both put into this every week. One question about the flat float that Matt had with him. He said it was fifty gram? That's 2 ounces surely you would struggle to see bites unless it was a bonus fish? Is this all it would be used for? Probably a stupid question.

Sponsorship is simple Make rod license angling trust in to one price Angling trust have so much more money to do a sponsor for team England

It’s an absolute disgrace that the international team are even partly self funded. The nonsense that this government or even the national lottery are funding on a weekly basis is ridiculous. This sport brings pleasure to a massive section of the population. Maybe the fact its mainly the sport of white,male,working class blokes is a factor?
