When I was going through a divorce! I thought my world had come to end. Family, church people, my Pastor, I was ridiculed on every corner! I caught hell! I couldn’t see my daughter and that hurt! That song played as I looking 4 gospel station. I felt God played that song for me! My daughter is grown now! She has grown up to be a incredible, and beautiful young lady! She has her own house; got a business! Man I thank God 4 her everyday! She has 4 kids; twins have Sickle Cell, the other 2 have some developmental disabilities, I travel 236 miles to go help her and I tutor her oldest daughter. But it’s all good! She is a strong, determined black woman. And I am so proud of her! She is a fighter! Sometimes she cries but i play this song and homegirl straightens right on up like a soldier that she is! She makes me proud! I am so proud of her!!! ❤

I'm so glad your daughter had a black mother & music to support her during times of challenge! I, as a white woman, resonated so completely to this song, as well. Geez, louise-- we ALL need to resonate, together, across racial lines. Yet, I also do see how important it is for ppl to be supported by their own racial groups-- as long as we realize we ALL need, also, to work towards the unity of all; without giving up our individual racial/cultural identity. I apologize if my viewpoint causes distress to ANYONE. UNITY. STRENGTH. TOGETHERNESS. Love & community ❤

I have a story with this song. My father died when i was 3 years old. I lived alone with my mother and she took good care of me, until she died of a bad surgery when i was only 16. After her death i discovered this song and every time I hear it, I can hear my mom talking to me through the lyrics. I'm grown up now and surrounded by friends. Still, I miss her a lot. Whenever I feel the sun warming me every morning, I just feel it's her, hugging me, just like she did every day before school. But I remember everyday that things will be easier and that sometime in the future we will walk again, together, under the lights of a beautiful morning, just like we did, before school. (Edit) Holy...! Thank you for all your support. The world is hard for all of us these days. But you've shown compasion and that warmed my heart. You all are great. Thank you.

It was a cold, bleak morning in early 1999 when we laid to rest our brother Nick. He was 21 years old and the youngest of my parents' seven children. That day, as well as those before and after, are still a blur with only fleeting moments of clarity. I remember leaving the cemetery in the funeral car with our oldest sister, Theresa, my older brothers Timmy and Eric and younger brothers Brady and Scott - the six of us were our brother's pallbearers. On the slow ride back, there was a lull of silence. After a few moments, Theresa asked the driver - a man in his mid-60s - if he could put on some soft music to break the awkward silence. Those first few familiar notes brought a moment of joy to our hearts, and smiles interspersed with tears . It was a family favorite that had been played to infinity on the big Magnavox hi-fi in our living room. It was one of Nick's favorites as well and he'd get excited when it was played during a well-known scene in one of his favorite movies, Boyz N The Hood. It was part of the soundtrack of our family's life together. God bless Clarence and Betty Burke for giving the world those six special children who recorded a song that touches the souls of all those who hear it and instills hope in the most disconsolate of circumstances. And a special thanks to that funeral driver, Mr. Villani, who laid the first stepping stone on the road to healing for six heartbroken siblings.

My dad passed away earlier this month (Jan. 4 2024) of Pancreatic Cancer and this was one of the songs we played at his funeral service. It’s the song that brings me comfort when I miss him because it makes me feel like he would want my mom and I to know he’s okay and that things in our lives will get eventually get better too. I’ve listened to it everyday since his passing to compartmentalize with my grief.

Yeah I though it was beautiful how they put this song in The Persuit of happiness movie man that movie made me cry it hits me allot because it reminds me similar to my life when I was a kid but it was just me and my mom. single mom never met my dad in the year 2008 my mom lost her 2 jobs, we also got evicted and we became homeless bouncing to homeless shelter to my crazy aunts house in New Mexico and I sometimes found my mom trying to cut herself I felt bad we heard this song walking into a gas station bathroom to clean up and this song for the first time made her smile and did a little dance with me twirling me around . Last year I just bought her a better looking house compared to that small house we lived in at her coworkers house

Listening to this after forgiving someone that destroyed my self esteem, self worth, and sent me into a crippling 3 year depression. I had vowed to never forgive this person that I dearly loved and trusted. I forgave her last night in person. The hate and despair have left me I came here for this song tonight. Things will get brighter. And if you need to forgive someone, do it and give yourself some peace.

I have a story with this song which I will never forget. A few months ago we were in the farmers' and artisans' market in Durham, NC. We were in a store with music playing in the background. We went up to the counter to pay for an item. The man behind the counter was looking down. Just then, the intro to this song came on and when the intro ended, I turned to my wife and started to sing the words. At that moment, the man behind the counter, still looking down started to sing as well. When he heard me singing, he looked up with the biggest smile on his face.. He reached out to me with a big handshake and an even bigger smile. It was such a simple moment but there was a magic in it that can only come about with a great song. Now, every time I hear the song I think of the power music has to bring people together.

This song is a "go to song" for me when ever the negative thoughts start permeating my head. I use it like a calling card from all my deceased family and friends....as if they are singing it to me. Like a message from God. Sometimes you just can't see through the fog. And I envision sunny days and better times upon hearing this. If only for a few moments....im free of the doldrums of life. Amen

Some of the best music ever made was in the 70's... Funk, Soul, the birth of Punk, Disco, Prog Rock, -- everything was going through a revolution and all modern genres of music have their roots in this decade (Rap, trance, house, modern R&B, etc). This was also the era when music went from mono on AM radio to steero FM, electronic music and synthesisers came into use, the birth of the concept album and mega concerts... It really is the one decade (if you pad a couple of years on either side) that has the biggest creative explosion seen in a long time... Classic soul is probably my top jam.

I get chills when I hear this song or snippets of it. The song has such deep meaning to me. My dad died in June 1970 when I was 15 yrs old. I remember that this song was playing all the time on the radio that summer after it came out. The words and feeling of the song comforted me then and when I hear it now, it still does. It brings me back to that summer and everything that was happening in the world at that time, as well as the emotions and what was going on in my own life. I didn't remember the name of the band who sang it but their version, which was the first, is unmistakeable. I know every beat, every note, and every second of it like it was 1970. It evokes a warmth and comfort in my soul and will until I die. I thank the songwriter and this group whose version is ingrained in my brain, for this very special song. ❤
