Grant Gustin from The Flash (2020) | Inside of You Podcast w/ Michael Rosenbaum - EP 111
Grant Gustin (The Flash, Arrow, Glee) joins us this week to share the mental and physical ups and downs throughout his blossoming career, notably within the CW DC Universe as Barry Allen in The Flash.
Grant gets deep this week and talks about the anxiety and depressions he’s battled through his career in theater and film, after having developed these early on in his childhood. We also get into his passion for Broadway, aspirations and regrets he’s had so far, and some BTS moments while shooting crossovers.
Plus… we have a very special guest that I think you all will enjoy. This is a must watch!

Grant talking about his tv Mom dying and how it affected him... It affected me too! I lost my Mom almost 3 years ago now... it sucks! I went back to re-watch The Flash and seeing that scene ripped me apart. No one really understands just how much it hurts to lose your Mom unless you've gone through it. I remember before my Mom died thinking how terrible it would be when the day comes.... I had no idea... it was worse than what I imagined. I don't wish that kind of pain on anyone.

I can relate to Grant about having anxiety over doing things right or correct. When I make mistakes, I’m really hard on myself. My dad had served in the army and he stressed that you don’t make mistakes; you can help people, but you don’t ask for help and put things back the way you found them. So, it’s hard for me to change that mindset when being raised like that. 😔

Which is how I found out about you, too, Rosenbaumers. So, now I want to watch Flash because I really dig the vibe of this guy. What is so amazing about the actors that play these roles is that the characters they play both share so many qualities with the real life actor but also are so very different in other fundamental ways. It's really a treat to watch interviews like this where you get a glimpse into the actor's psyche and method and realize that they were literally born to play the role. Grant is such a smart, self-aware guy that is both strong and aware of his vulnerability. He's really the embodiment of what it means to be Barry Allen. I really look forward to seeing him spread his wings into other projects!!

Just in the middle of the podcast. Really appreciate the insights that Grant has about his marriage to LA. I recently got married in 2017. As a person with anxiety, I often had trouble navigating through the constant sea of thoughts, feelings and my own "inner monologue". I have since realized that I find great comfort having an open dialogue with my husband about the random things that get me nervous throughout the day. Though I am quite logical and level headed, I really appreciate my husband's point of view as it is always eye-opening, hilarious and incredibly on-point. Not only does he help me feel more at ease, Kelvin has developed a more open communication style about what his needs are. This openness in communication has definitely ensured that we are both on the same page.

Aw!! We are not just here for Grant (though he is a talented and entertaining individual). I am definitely here for you, Michael Rosenbaum, and this wonderful podcast. I am listening to the podcast chronologically (I am up to Episode 28: Andrew McMahon). However, I did decide to jump forward as I am a big fan of the Flash and Grant Gustin's work as well. I work as a Cardiology Tech at Vancouver General Hospital and I often get overwhelmed in the ER doing ECGs on patients. Mental wellness is so important as I can only take care of others as long as I am well myself. This podcast (as well as working in watercolour in my sketchbooks) has been such a cornerstone in my mental self-care routine. You literally help me do my job better. Big hugs from Coquitlam, Canada and thank you for continuing to create such a wonderful body of work. Big hello to the all the lovely people who help you produce this podcast as well.

Absolutely loved this one Rosey great editing as usual, thank you Ryan I’ve been listening for about 5 months now and found the podcast very helpful on a personal level. But one of the things that I pick up on through all of the episodes and is highlighted beautifully in this episode is how I can be there for my son. My son is 17 and has quite a bit of talent (I keep thinking it’s just because I’m his dad that I think that but then I see him on stage) he almost always gets the part he auditions for and I’m so damn proud of him. But community theatre in the UK is a long way from the west end, broadway or film and tv. However these stories of how people did just this and dealt with their anxieties and sometimes negative outside influences and barriers to success really help me to be a supportive influence to him Thank you from the bottom of my heart for having these conversations it really does mean the world to me

What's terrific about this interview, thanks to its honesty, is that it smashes the cultural conditioning that 'making it', ie achieving career/material 'success' is the be-all and end-all, and is some Golden Path to lifelong casual happiness. Instead, Grant and Stephen Amell's honesty reveals that being a TV leading man is what it is, a job, and a highly demanding one that brings its own challenges. Thank you to Michael for conducting these interviews and getting to the reality of it all.

You see, this is the kind of interview with a 'celebrity' that I appreciate. Literally felt like a therapy session. It's nice to be able to uncover the person inside of the celebrity; because that's exactly who they are at the end of the day. Everyone, no matter what path life may lead them to, has gone through the struggle, anxiety of getting them to that point. Grant, seems like such a genuine person and despite all the success, still remains humble and appreciative of the journey! I hope that in time, he's able to view himself as worthy enough to have all these things and believes it too!

Grant for your great initiative to share with us, your experiences on the states of health of depression and anxiety, that overwhelmed you in your childhood, and in your career in the cinema and theater, you are strong for having overcome these negative states, and For telling us about your great passion on Broadway, your and frustrations, it is normal all this when they fight for a goal but in the end you are standing and strengthened.

Thanks for this, it helps everyone who struggles with this; it helps us show that actors are human too; because sometimes as regular people we picture actors as another “creature”; but this shows that they’re people too with daily struggles as any human being.

The Flash meets the Flash. Oh yeah. Grant Gustin is great as Barry Allen and as the Flash. The season 2 introduction of Barry Allen in Arrow was perfect and seeing him as a fan of Arrow in that episode was beautiful.

Awesome episode! I don’t think I’ve ever seen/read/heard an interview with Grant, so I appreciated this. He seems like a good guy. Such a good interview! I would love to have him come back and talk about Rescued by Ruby and whether he was drawn to it because he related to the character. I was late diagnosed with ADHD because I'm not hyperactive, as many women are, and so much of what he described here as his experiences with anxiety really mirror my experience with ADHD.

Great interview!! Been listening since the Macaulay interview popped up on the news and I thought “Wait Lex has a podcast!!!” And it’s seriously been awesome to listen every week since then. Always especially enjoy the superhero on superhero interviews and I’ve been waiting for this one since Flash is my favorite superhero!! And don’t sell yourself short on the voice acting! I had 4 Justice League episodes on DVD as a kid and the Flash MADE my childhood!! You’re a legend as lex and wally!!

Grant being cast as The Flash was the best decision ever! He was so young when he was given this big role and he did carried it so well as the lead. And he still doing so well- professionally and personally. We have seen actor's personal lives go down once they become a huge star.. but Grant stayed humble and down to earth...I loved that he comes across so humble till now.

Omg grant did so well in that scene with his mom dying that I cry every time I watch it. Even if it’s just on YT for like 5 seconds, I cry. So to hear that he cried hysterically about it hours after filming is like comforting in a way lmao

From the anxiety and depression at a young age to the imposter syndrome...it’s like I was listening to him read my mind! I am so grateful he has LA because it seems like she’s really opened him up and helps anchor him so his mind doesn’t race too much with anxiety (it still happens but I’m sure she is extremely helpful with handling it). It’s wonderful to see Grant smile. Thank you for having him on here!

Didn't know a lot about Grant outside of his role, but finding out he's a really great and humble guy makes me like him even more. I wasn't into DC growing up, but Grant and Stephen made it worth checking out. I've always wondered how some actors are able to film such intense/epic scenes(referring to the season 1 finale moment he has with his mom) and how it affects them. It's always a scene I show people. Hopefully we're able to get a couple more seasons out of him, and maybe he can even carve out some extra time for theater when he renegotiates his contract.

@@knightspask9218 You can dislike his running style, but that doesn't mean he didn't accomplish exactly what he wanted to. I'm no Snyder fanbase but Ezra did the character justice. Hell, he can run faster than the speed of light. Wouldn't it be weird if he *didn't* run abnormally?
