Sir Francis Level Gunnerside in Swaledale, North Yorks was first started in 1864 to reach lead deposits in the Frairfold Vein. It was originally driven with hand drilled shot holes and black powder. ... Mining was carried out until the late1880's, but was never commercially successful

Rule of thumb for caves if your voice echos, cave should be sturdy. If it don’t echo, that means the ground above and around you absorbed your sound, meaning it’s loose, and not compact. Higher chance of cave in.

Wowwwwww! What an amazingly AWSOME mine! All that beautiful history buried down there! Thank you for taking us to see it! How on earth did they build those lifts with no proper lighting? It beggars belief! I come from a long line of miners and have always wondered what it must have been like for them and, thru all your eyes, I'm seeing what I've always longed to see!

A colossal amount of lead ore was extracted by man and beast from these mines The stone portals are way north of awesome building them in the gloom and so neat and accurate to perfectly form the arch much brain and muscle was used as they are mostly intact after all this time the colours are beautiful in your lights ,Thanks both of you for showing it to every one.

Hi Antonio, whoa that was one stunning explore, I have seen a lot of mine video's but nothing like this before, I'm speechless. Seeing the lift cage and all of the winding gear was just so cool, it's a shame that it isn't being preserved but if it was then access would probably be denied. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤

sooo your gas detector is sort of alarming a bit there. Any chance you thought to dismiss the alarm or get out of there if it was something to be concerned about?
@UndergroundExplorerUK
@UndergroundExplorerUK 2 жыл бұрын
Most gas detectors alarm will go off at quite a reasonable 18.5 % O2 , now in my experience you can still explore quite comfortably in the 18.0-18.5 % O2 !.. maybe it’s just about recalibrating the alarm

What an awesome mine. Where to start?.....the stone work, the lift, the lift room, the steps leading to the lift room that were built into the arch. Great video!

I wonder how that lift cage winding drum was powered? maybe hydraulic from and steam engine on the surface perhaps. What is even more of a wonder his how did they get all that gear AND the stone down for the tunnels in the first place?

I quite enjoyed the pump mechanism. A shaft pump, the shaft extending down to the right of the cage. Its piston was clearly visible in the hoist operator area on the left. Not sure if steam or compressed air - I think it’s the former but where is the boiler? Thanks for taking the short straw 😉

It's actually hydraulic, the inlet pipe sticks out up on the surface. I don't believe it ever worked very well.

It’s remarkable when you think the shaft was sunk underground, ie the mine looks to have been accessed by a drift, then a shaft sunk and haulage gear erected underground 😳

@ John Parkin Yes, and that’s not even that rare. One sees it in the mines beneath Tombstone USA for instance.

Im all for safety., but is there a way dude can adjust the bloody volume on that blasted O2 monitor? If not he could try a piece of tape over the speaker to at least muffle it down enough so you can be heard. I know the monitor is working as designed, but the volume of it nearly make your video unwatchable because you can barely be heard over it.

Can't help but feel sad for those poor pit ponies. Imagine being stuck underground your whole life. Yes I know humans did it too and I know it was hard for them as well, but they were at least nominally there by choice. The ponies were just put there and expected to deal.
