The perfect fly to target big sea trout. This fly has changed my results on coastal fishing for the better in both numbers and size. And this video is no exception. I will also tell a story of how I came to start to fish with such big patterns of up to 11-12 cm during wade fishing. One thing that I leave open after this video is when it is suitable to use this fly because I honestly don’t know myself, it’s something that I still figure out and I encourage you to try as well.

I‘ve fished 25years spinning before I‘ve started fly fishing. So for me this is still a small lure 😂 my dropper fly is always a baitfish between 4 and 10cm or a bigger shrimp. I think the biggest advantage of fly fishing compared to spinning is the possibility to fish really slow and shallow and have lures that hovers in the water. I have a few friends that fish suspending wobblers to overcome this disadvantage and they catch a lot more fish than the „normal“ spinning guys do. I love both techniques but got stucked at fly fishing because I am able to present all kinds of lures (big streamers, small scuds) in a perfect way. For me the hardest part is not finding lures that work or getting fish (to land them is another story 😂) but casting with a fly rod after millions of casts spinning is still a competition for me 😅 I like this pattern and will copy it today 🎉 thx for sharing ❤

Brilliant stuff Robert. Really enjoyed how you are learning from watching a spin fisherman. As you said, Fly fishing is a journey and not a destination. If you don’t learn something every time you go out then it soon gets boring. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have also started fishing with bigger flies and lures after watching Daniels videos, and I have to say that I catch way more fish on the open coast now. Even the small fish seem to be way more aggressive towards the bigger lures.

Ja ja ja, another epic Fiska Tour de Gotland. I spin, cast and fly fish. I always catch more bigger with casting and spinning, but I love fly casting and am good at it enough to enjoy catching a lot of smaller fish with it. Robert, I will try your big bait fish streamer on Largemouth and Smallmouth bass tomorrow. Thanks for the expert advice.

Ok, I tried my version on this fly but with a cone head and caught 2 nice largemouth bass on it in very windy conditions today. I switched to a modified Clouser with bead chain eyes and could roll cast it easier since it was lighter…..got 4 more bass on it. Both flies had chartreuse bucktail in then. Ok…the osprey were active when I got to the local pond…I knew I was gonna catch some on Roberts fly. If I was a real witch …….I would have transported myself to Sweden to catch sea trout instead. ha de.

Hi Robert, many THX for your insights in fishing and tying for seatrout! Myself, I tied tried similar Baitfish Pattern for baltic silver. I also had some eyes under UV-resin. My Flies stumbled laterally when retrieved around and staggered around themselves without spinning. There was no straight keeling. I feel, that this could be a not appreciated motion. How does your Streamer behave? Did you experiment with much slimmer, tobis-style Patterns also? Keep up the good work, and all the best from Berlin! Ralph

I tie these but i use silicone instead when the mullet come in its hard to beat , i even tie surf candies but with silicone you just work it with your fingers. I tie them down to size 1 you can put some red flash in or a blend it in and it looks just like a wounded baitfish in the water, and use them as a dropper behind a clouser minnow. Its a deadly set up in the surf stripping it in , you never now whats on the end of your line . We fish off deep drop offs in the surf over a 100feet deep, it goes from 2 ft to 50 ft to a 100ft and on outgoing and incoming tide the fish lay right there waiting for the bait big stripers 20 to 40 plus not uncommon all year.

Hello, congratulations on your videos. I am a river flyfisherman in Spain. I have recently started fly fishing at sea, in river mouth areas in northern Spain. I bought a 9.6 foot rod for line 7, and I use a 7wf lake line whose casting head measured is 12 meters and has the running line integrated. I can't make long casts since I'm using very heavy baits and lures and I need advice on which line to use. I have thought about buying a scagit casting head from the opst brand, they are very short (3.50m) and I have seen in the videos that they can be used with one-handed rods and they achieve very long casts. What I would like above all is a line that allows me to make rolling casts, and that I can flip really heavy baits. Could I also use this type of lines on beaches? In your videos I see that you achieve long distances easily, I look forward to your advice. A greeting from Spain. Thank you.

The shorter head length the easier it will become. I never used that short heads. I use 8, 5 meter heads primarily and that is a big difference compared to 12 meters with heavy flies especially. But it is also about technique. A long casting stroke is better and essential for long casts. As long as you can keep the rod path straight. The rod tip path should be like traveling through a long narrow tube in the air. The better you can perfect that the longer lines and difficult casting conditions you can master. But it is easier said then done. Ask me to cast with my wrong arm and I look like a beginner. It is a lot about muscle memory.
