My dad was stationed at El Toro back in the 80s. Will be nice to see part of it preserved.

Thank you again. As Americans we are so fortunate to have people like these two soldiers protecting and serving the United States.

I was very fortunate to fly A-4M Skyhawks out of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro with the Tomcats of Marine Attack Squadron 311 (VMA-311). As a long-time supporter of the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and Aviation Museum, I'm looking forward to the museum being located closer to where I live. Semper Fidelis and A-4s 4Ever!!!

I raced at OCIR in the late 70s. After I joined the Marines ended up stationed at MCAS Tustin from 1985 to 1989 with HMH-466. In 1997 I returned to SoCal at MCAS El Toro with VMGR 352. I made the move to Miramar in 1999. I met my wife while stationed at El Toro. That base and those memories will always be special to us.

I drag raced at OCIR (located just a bit closer to l-5) next to El Toro Air Station throughout the 70’s. Witnessed some great air show shows. Training etc. The touch and go training was spectacular especially if in formation .

I agree that it doesn’t seem like there would be much interest in the Irvine area, but I’m sure they have done studies. It’s nice that the city themselves is on board. I hope it works out.

I worked for the City of Irvine and it was a sad day when both El Toro and Tustin bases closed. It was great working with both bases and I'm glad to see that a part of both bases will continue to keep some history intact at Tustin (Hangar) and the El Toro (Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum).

Agreed. As one who grew up there, it is WONDERFUL to hear that this will be relocated to this historically relevant venue once again.

I always liked the museum at MCAS Miramar. It always caught my attention every time I drove down Miramar Rd. and I'd go in their occasionally when I was on base. It was a very nice collection, but back then 2000-2009, the paint on most of the aircraft was pretty faded. I can only hope they will be able to, if nothing else, restore the paint.

@@FighterPilotPodcast I should have waited until the end of the podcast before I started typing. I'm glad they will be restoring the paint jobs. The F4U and F7F night fighters were so badly faded they were almost gray instead of black. I hate seeing those classic old aircraft getting so badly weathered and faded when stored outdoors.

I was at first concerned that the museum was folding. Good to know the museum will be going into new territory for visitors who otherwise may not have made the journey.
