Hey Jared, great video! Love the idea of using the off season blend for fertilizer and weed control! Got a few questions: 1. Should I still fertilize initially to establish some phosphorus and potassium prior to laying down the seed? 2. Also, should I lay down a layer of pelletized lime according to my soil test? 3. If I want to establish a clover plot, can I plant both the off-season and multi-year blends at the same time? Or should I come back in with the multi-year in the fall? 4. For an already established clover plot, can I plant the offseason blend in the fall for a frost seed for weed control and fertilizer and still expect my perennial (multi-year blend) to grow just fine? Thank you for all the information! And if there is any other resources that might be able to help, please let me know! Blessings!

Thank You Jared! I just ordered the Multi Year as a filler for my existing clover/ alfalfa food plot. It's going into its 5th year and is looking a little sparse. I've never tried the chicory so this should be a great experience. I may have mentioned in past comments on some of your other videos but I literally only have about a 1/2 acre of huntable land and so far over the last 4 years the food plot has been a huge draw and is filled with both bucks, does, and fawns up until mid October. I put field corn in on the back side of the clover/alfalfa a couple years ago and it was probably the best year I've had hunting this tiny piece of property. I am putting corn in again this spring, along with the Multi Year so this should be a fun upcoming season! Thanks again my friend!!
@jaredmills
@jaredmills 5 ай бұрын
Thanks Dean! I think you'll be impressed with the chicory in that blend. One really nice thing about it, especially for your situation, is that it handles browse pressure really well. The deer hit it and it grows back quickly. So I think that combined with the clover will be pretty sweet in that spot, along with your corn. Do you plan to frost seed the Multi-year into your existing plot?
@deancoffey5703
@deancoffey5703 5 ай бұрын
Yes the plan is to frost seed. I need to run a landscaping rake through the plot before hand to make sure I get good seed to soil contact and dethatch, then roll it once the seed is down. I was wondering how it would hold up to browse pressure because I've had as many as 32 deer in that half acre clover plot at once. Generally there's less than half that in there throughout the spring, summer and fall almost daily. I'm looking forward to trying this seed. The field corn plot however is less than 1/4 acre so I have to hotwire them out of the corn but it runs along the back of the clover/alfalfa with 30 yard openings on either end of the corn which forces the bucks to come into the plot to visually look to see if there's does in it. Otherwise they'll stand back at the edge of the 1 acre CRP along the edge of the woods and sight or scent check the plot. The very back edge along the corn is the neighbors who doesn't allow hunting so I've figured out a great food plot setup that forces the bucks to commit to coming in to have a look. It's worked excellent so far. I only own 4 acres but the surrounding landowners property is 55 acres of mixed low woodland and the thickest brushy cover I've ever been in. If a deer happens to run onto his he said it's cool if I go retrieve it but no one is allowed to hunt his land. Either way I've designed a really sweet spot for me and my father-in-law.@@jaredmills

I had an acre or so of woods blow over in a storm last summer and was thinking about cutting the wood up leaving the brush in piles around the edges and doing a food plot I’m in central Michigan and the plot would be on a field edge with about 20 acres of woods around it a big swamp on the back side of the woods and the field will be corn that gets chopped early in the year for a couple more years before becoming alfalfa. Was wondering what kind of plot you think would be best as I have no experience in food plots I tried to give you all the info I could thanks for any information you can give me

Hey Jay. It's definitely a mild late winter. We've got some 70 degree weather coming but two days later it'll be back in the 20's. Still plenty of time here. And I haven't seen the turkeys do too much damage to that smaller seed like clovers, mostly the larger ones like grains. But could be different where you're at.

Hey Jared, really enjoy your videos. Have learned a lot from them. I’m located in southern Ohio and I have a 2 acre food plot that is split into 3 different sections. If you would plant three things excluding grain, what would they be? Thanks for the help.
@jaredmills
@jaredmills 5 ай бұрын
Hey Eli, thanks for watching and reaching out. Are your three sections about even in size? Within a two acre area, and excluding grain, I'd probably just do two different plantings instead of three. I'd do one in a clover/chicory blend like the Multi-Year I talked about in this video, and one in a brassica blend, like the Rut Greens or One Plot ASAP. If you wanted to do two different brassica blends to get to your three sections, you could do each of those. Obviously a lot to consider, like how you hunt it and when you can plant, so if you want to share more information feel free to shoot me an email jaredjamesmills@gmail.com and I can talk through it some more with you. Thanks again for the support.

That's interesting. I don't think I'd want chicory any more than 1/4" deep, that's about I what I strive for but I always broadcast it. It doesn't need much, just a little bit of dirt over the top will result in good establishment and growth.

I've tried frost seeding clover for the first time this year. The first spot the temperatures that morning and afternoon and the next morning were as predicted and in my favor. The second, third and fourth spots the temperatures that afternoon and the following two mornings were not as predicted and never got near the freezing mark. But, the next day after seeding it rained all day long. The third and fourth mornings the temperatures did get below freezing. Do you think the second, third, and fourth spots will take, or will they need to be planted again?

Hey Travis- good question. We've got one blend, dubbed One Plot, for that scenario. For the guys that want a do it all blend and really just have one plot to plant. It's done really well for me the past 3 years. You can check that out on the website (One Plot ASAP). If you have 1.5 acres to plant though, that's enough where you could consider maybe doing 1/2 acre of a clover chicory blend like Multi-Year, along side 1 acre of the One Plot ASAP. @@jaredmills Thanks a lot! In a perfect world I'd like to plant beans, but it wouldn't survive the summer browse, would it?
@jaredmills
@jaredmills 5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what the deer density is like in your area, but 1.5 acres of beans is pretty tough to get to maturity where I'm at without fencing them in. You could always try it, and if the beans do make it past the deer, you could overseed some greens into the standing beans to increase the forage and attractiveness to that plot. Or, if they got browsed hard and aren't going to produce much, you could always disc it up in August and just plant the fall blend then. @@travisshuttleworth630

I wonder if I plant beans a couple weeks after the farmers, the deer will hit the agg fields more than mine?
@jaredmills
@jaredmills 5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I don't think that timing will make much of a difference. In my experience, it's more about the proximity to their bedding, they're typically going to hit the closest stuff first. Bean variety can make a small difference in preference, but in general they're not going to walk through your beans to get to the ag beans and vice versa. @@travisshuttleworth630

@jaredmills
@jaredmills 5 ай бұрын
If the grass is pretty thick, even if it's short, you likely won't see great results with frost seeding. The seed really needs be able to reach the soil for it to work properly. I don't know how it all sets up but it's possible you could get away with burning the grassy area you're wanting to plant (assuming it's still dormant and not green), and then you could seed the clover blend. Otherwise, I'd wait and either kill the grass when it starts actively growing or till it up, and do a regular spring seeding as opposed to frost seeding.@@barbaragraber6420

@jaredmills
@jaredmills 5 ай бұрын
Hey Douglas- thanks for subscribing. Alfalfa is good when it's established, but can be kind of finnicky to get there, and sometimes it takes more maintenance than the clover/chicory. It would help some doing it the way you described as opposed to frost seeding though. If you want to try adding a little alfalfa to the blend, I think it'd be worth a shot. The clover/chicory should be there as your fail safe.

Hey Jordan, the blends are everything that's on this page (monsterbuck.com/collections/blends). As for the Hooyman spreader, I like it overall. I like the harness system for easy on/off for loading seed. It's well built. Two things I wish were different. I wish the handle was switchable to the other side so it could be cranked either left handed or right handed, and two, I wish it spread seed wider. I also have the electric version and it's even narrower as far as the spread goes. But overall it's a solid spreader, I don't know of a different one I'd prefer, just a couple changes I'd make if I could.
