This is the Forgotten abandoned railroad aka CSX Homestead Subdivision in deep South Miami Dade County, Florida ...
At the Kings Highway crossing you will see it as it makes its way behind some backyards and in front of a school (it'd be funny if they had a conductor training program ). Here you will see how see residents selflessly cut the weeds on the tracks (although I'm guessing it's to keep the insects and pests away and not to preserve the line ). It is extremely noticeable as right where one persons property line ends, so does the cleanliness on the track. They start to turn into a forest essentially not visible in many parts. This historic railway was built in 1926 by Seaboard Air Line and even connected with the Miami Extension of the FEC Overseas Railroad en route to the Florida Keys and Key West until the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane destroyed it. This line played a vital role in the history of South Florida as we know it today and unfortunately, it is being left to rot disgracefully. I think it deserves better. Some investor with money should purchase it and make a tourism or excursion ride out of it. Join me for some archaeology in this video!

I can understand why the people whose property abuts the old CSX Homestead Subdivision would want to maintain the track area along their property lines. Cleaning up that part of the right of way would prevent problems with wildlife. I clocked on the Google Maps hyperlink that followed the tracks to their current end. The actual tracks on Google Maps seem to just disappear a few blocks south was SW 4th Street. You see that there are tracks then there is just gravel. Thanks for taking us to this location.

You do get some people who buy a home by something that obviously creates a bit of noise then complain about the noise. In the UK we often hear of city dwellers who move to the country then complain about cockerels crowing or church bells ringing. Like the neat grass border by part of the railway, guess that property owner liked the railway.

Ever since CSX abandoned the Homestead Subdivision, I wondered what their logic was by folding the crossing lights upward. Yes, the crossings are deactivated, but I wondered what the point is in doing that. I have seen when other railroads abandoned unwanted lines, they either turn the lights around so that the lenses face each other like I've seen on some abandoned Norfolk Southern crossings or those railroads don't even bother doing that at all. They just simply cut the power and walk away.

Good morning Edward, I agree with your guess; with there being no customers and not enough population to justify passenger trains, CSX or no other RR would have any business interest here. I feel for anybody who would buy a house along that line before expecting to see trains and then finding out too late that the line is slated for abandonment. It would be like Stan and Kyle in “South Park” screaming “Shenanigans! SHENANIGANS!!!!” But is IS nice to see that at least one part of the line is cared for...until the property line ends, and then it’s worse than ever with the trash and detritus on top of the weeds run amok! Always nice to visit sunny south Florida. I was surprised though, I didn't see any sacrifices along the track. It must be a suburban environment that supports Santeria because it seems like the more rural you go it seems like the less you see and unfortunately smell. Rotten chicken reeks about as bad as anything dead except dead human. Thank God I haven't smelled that yet, or at least that I know. I've smelled some pretty bad Sugar Honey Ice Tea. Enjoy your videos, and have you ever considered covering the sugar cane harvesting? If not can you keep rolling on down to the end of the line in Homestead? Is there any evidence of the Overseas Railway still existing on any of the Florida Keys, specifically Key West? I hate illegal jumpers! To those who dump illegally just pay the tipping fees at the dump or transfer station it's really easy.
@railrol82
@railrol82 3 жыл бұрын
Good observation on lack of sacrifices. That is because we are in Homestead, FL which is about 30 miles South of Miami. Here, the main demographic is Mexicans who are mostly Catholic. In Miami, most of the Cubans there practice Santeria. It's funny you mention covering sugar cane harvesting. I went to Central FL a few weeks ago and I don't know what is going on, if it is something covid related or a strike, but all the sugar cane were ready to be harvested and nothing was happening. They were about to start withering. There's about 5 videos left in this series until we get to the end of the line. There are still some bridges of the former Overseas RR in the Keys. Illegal dumpers have no regard for private property, I bet they don't dump stuff in their living room like that. Thanks as always for the views and comments, Mike!

If you had to put a price on the CSX line, what would it be because I wanna save the line when I move to Florida if it is still there. Thanks for your archaeology works. I can't wait to see your videos in other states. I like to watch trains all the time. the last one I saw was on Lazy row in Atlanta Illinois and it had 2 semi-truck trailers but the rest was cargo containers(ones you see on ships) Lincoln usually only sees the cargo container trains on the Springfield subdivision. Lincoln also has the CN Peoria subdivision and a spur to the paper plant, the spur is the remains of the Havanna district railroad. The spur rarely sees trains and the CN Peoria subdivision sees a train maybe 1 to 2 times a week.

There's a good section that run from Krome ave to sw 216 st is a long straight line almost a mile or so long.

Disclaimer: I don't know the legality of it, BUT (lol) I agree with you that the section between 216 and Krome ave is the longest, best stretch to do so. I would park my truck and dismount the speeder some blocks away from the main road and 5-0 would be none the wiser. The high weeds will be your cover. BTW, if you're going to do this, I would gladly accompany you!

I'm working on a preassembled one with a small 6hp engine. As soon as I have the wheels .... 😁 I'll let you know. I did it in Cuba once with a URAL motorcycle engine.. the feeling and speed is better than a go-kart lol.

Yes, it's a continuing series. I started it at the very 1st abandoned RXR on this track, and have been heading South. There are about 2 miles left before the end of the line. Thanks as always for the views and comments!
