The Forgotten Alfa - 1979/87 Alfa Romeo Alfa 6

By the time of its presentation to the international press in 1979, the #AlfaRomeo #Alfa6 had been in gestation for over a decade, and it very nearly didn't happen.
To say the Alfa 6 hasn't been a success would be an understatement, as, over its seven-year lifespan, it sold little more than it was expected to do in one single year. Yet I believe the first car equipped with the #Busso V6 engine doesn't deserve the obscurity in which it has fallen, nor the flak it often gets from people who, in most cases, have hardly even seen one in the first place. It's high time for someone to set the record straight on a story that's too often been misrepresented and misunderstood.
The footage in the video was shot during an event in May 2019 and includes an intervention from former Alfa Romeo designer Mario Favilla.

To me Italy’s 2 litre luxury car taxation was one of the most tragic own goals in the history of economics. It was responsible that only a small car manufacturer (Fiat) and the money-doesn’t-matter brand Ferrari really survived the eighties. I genuinely believe that without it, today we’d have at least Alfa, Lancia and Maserati who’d compete with the German brands.

We'll never know how the Italian industry would have evolved without the 38% VAT on over-2L cars in Italy, but I do think it was a misguided policy that did no good to the industry in the country
@BanjoLuke1
@BanjoLuke1 3 жыл бұрын
I am inclined to think otherwise.... We had no such tax in the UK and produced the groundbreaking SD1 and the various XJ Jaguars and the Triumph 2.5pi.... All those companies went under or ceased to exist in a recognisable form. Italy had your system, France had a more tailored system with the "limit" (affordable limit) set at 2.8 litres.... But Italy produced the most wonderful small cars in Europe for decades... I do not think that was a coincidence. I think that the domeatic-market focus of the smaller Italian brands led to their demise or near-demise more than the fiscal hit on engines over 2 litres. There were also strange beasts like the Ferrari 208.... Somehow a terrible car bit also not a terrible car. You can do a lot with 2 litres. I am reminded of the beautiful 400cc Magni Moto Guzzis built for the Japanese market, where for similar but not identical reasons it was tough to buy a larger motorcycle. You can do a lot with 400cc.... I adore Lancia and Alfa products, but I do not think they were killed or even weakened very much as companies by the engone-size tax. Individual models were terribly compromised by it and in some cases killed off completely as commercial considerations (the Sei is one). But as companies, both Alfa and Lancia were somehow diluted and presented as "product" and as a part of a "brand" within a "corporate family" when everything about the character of the cars they made shouted that this was a bad move. Somebody put an accountant in charge of product development and a management consultant in charge of marketing... or similar. When the character of a car is measured by its grille or its swage line and not its driving characteristics, then the battle has already been lost.

@@BanjoLuke1 Thanks for taking the time to write an extensive answer. I much agree to what you’re saying. In fact I think that the Italian luxury tax was not the only reason for some of the industry’s most important companies to loose their independence, but certainly an important one.

Maybe it was not good for the industry but the small engine policy was brilliant for world resources. Maybe we should rather view it as the German model that was bad, just more suited to human nature.

@@Matteo_Licata Sure I had my first Alfa Sei about 30 years ago. A first series silver with black leather and working airco from 1979. After that i had a silver one, with automatic gearbox and working airco from 1981. Also the same time i had a 1979 silver model without airco from 1982. AL these Sei were 2.5v6 carburator models. Then i had a blue 2.5v6 second serie with velours interior and airco. This one i imported from Naples Italy, it was a 1984 model. After that i owned a second serie 1984 burgundy red with airco. Fully restored, but lost the car due to a fire. My last one was a beautiful first series chestnut brown with the olive green interior. Orginally from Marseille France. Sold it not long ago. It is for the first time in 30 years that i do not own a Sei in my collection. I forgot the Alfa Sei TD a 1985 second series silver grey with light blue leather interior.

Excellent video. As usual, your enthusiasm shows in every word and image. This was a strange, strange time in the "executive" car market in Europe. Everyone had started to play (seeking the superior returns in that sector) and the market was full. Full and busy.... 604, Tagora, R30, 5 Series, Commodore, W-123, SD1, Granada, Volvo 264 and more besides from Japan, Italy and elsewhere. Each had its own national quirks and USPs... and each suffered the prejudices of potential buyers. With Alfa so heavily dependent on its home market but hamstrung by the swept volume of the Sei motor, this was never going to be a big seller. And one of its competitors was the upper end of the Alfetta range.... This sort of competition from within was usually the preserve of BL. The Sei was a rare thing in the UK. Fear of six carburettors... Fear of "Italian unreliability", fear of fridge-off-a-cliff depreciation. There were so many safer choices that offered all the sporting allure with none of the fear and little of the risk. The looks, too, had more Alfetta in them than may have been prudent for a model higher in the range. It doesn't matter that they had little in common... the suggestion was there and it is that first impression that lasts I haven't seen one for years and slightly miss the occasional glimpse of one. But I am a fool for Italian cars. To the man in the street, to the fleet buyer, it was just a slightly bigger, pricier Alfetta with added quirks. And almost everything else looked more modern... whatever the word "modern" means. The (Lancia) Gamma and the Sei were fighting for the same few hundred UK buyers and lost most of them to BMW, Rover (!) and Citroen. Sad, but inevitable. Great video. Huge fun to watch. A reminder of those fleeting memories of cars that used to make the heart beat a little faster.

Really Like the Alfa Sei. The injection model was managed by a Bosch L-Jetronic as far as I know; Not by the K-Jetronic. The L-Jetronic was a fully electronic injection system with a transistorized ignition. Just Like on BMW's Models from the beginning 80s. Today much easier to maintain then a K-Jetronic with all the mechanical parts, such as the fuel distributor. Following the Car reviews of German Auto, Motor & Sport Magazine it reduced significantly the fuel consumption, improved cold start behavior but took some reactivity and punsh out of the Busso Beauty. Thank you vor this great video.

Thanks for your informative video about the Alfa 6. Starting my driving history in 1982 with a used Alfasud and with one friend’s Alfetta as sole reference for the brand, I am not even sure if I ever saw an Alfa 6 in Germany, it doesn’t look familiar to me. And in the 80s Alfa Romeo wasn’t selling big in my Black Forest region, the dealership and workshop being one of the smallest in town.

I didn't go into detail in the video, as diesel cars (Alfa or not) have little to no collectors' appeal, in general. But the inline-5 used on the Alfa 6 Turbodiesel was a VM design from their infamous "modular" engine family. Basically, it was the same design as the first Alfetta 2.0 TD engine, but with one more cylinder. It was fast for its time and pulled strongly... But it was as sophisticated as a bag of hammers, and very few survive today.

Did it belong in the F segment along with the 7-series and S-class? ALso, taking into consideration your last few minutes with the presentation of the peple that worked for the "6", do u believe it's better for the designer to work under non- negiotionable guidelines from above or it's better to be more self-sufficient (but also distracted from designing) like today?

The Alfa 6 was indeed a 7 series competitor, at least in the automaker’s intentions. It’s hard to say whether it was better once or now, as the techniques and the roles have changes beyond recognition.

It is sized like an E segment, but aimed at the F segment, since the Alfetta and 90 already targeted the 5 series and E class.

In my opinion Alfa should have kept the gearbox in the front on the Alfetta but used the fabulous de Dion like the Alfa 6. The better gearshift and cost saving would have been a small price to pay for a slightly less balanced car, or used the saving to rust proof the cars better. Alfa history might have been different.

You have a point, yes. The transaxle was probably more trouble than it was worth, so much so that many within Alfa Romeo itself were against it. The Alfetta came out as sophisticated as it was largely because of Giuseppe Busso's stubborn support for the transaxle idea.

Looking at Alfa 6, Alfa Romeo actually have a very huge potential to compete with German Rivals such as BMW and Audi. Sadly Fiat and subsequent FCA management shambles Alfa Romeo's potential. I do hope Stellantis can make Alfa Romeo as Italian version of BMW, Audi and Mercedes.

Prefer the styling of the Series 2 over the Series 1. With the benefit of hindsight what could Alfa Romeo have done to improve the prospects of both the Alfa 6 and Alfetta saloon as well as resolve any flaws or limitations of both cars? Read elsewhere of plans for the Alfa 6 to be launched in 1974 though you mentioned it could have appeared much earlier based on its very protected development, is that to say the Alfa 6 could have potentially appeared in the late 1960s so the Alfa 6 directly replaces the 2600 from 1968 without any 6-10 year gap between the two models (if not around the same time as the 1972 Alfetta at minimum)? Also were any other bodystyles considered for the Afla 6 outside of the 4-door saloon? The fact the Alfa 6 displaced only 2.5-litres at most is understandable considering the circumstances both internationally as well as in the domestic Italian market, together with suggestions it was to soon receive a 3.0-litre version of the Montreal V8 as the range topper (was the latter capable of 4-litres?), yet it is rather annoying it stayed a 2.5-litres V6 considering the likes of the BMW 5-Series E12, Mercedes-Benz W123 and even the Fiat 130 received significantly larger engine capacities compared to the Alfa 6 with the latter not even receiving a 2.8-litre or 3.0-litre V6.

Having researched in-depth this car, I can answer your questions with certainty: the Alfa 6 was slated for launch in '74, but "frozen" in light of the Oil Crisis. In the early 70s, design studies for a coupé were made, but they didn't progress any further than styling mock-ups.

Ι think when 6 was launched was already outdated in exterior design. A, B, pillars, parabreza, mussetto etc. all outdated. They should try harder on this segmenet in order to be ahead of the competition & benefit more.

@@Matteo_Licata Yes. I own the car 15 years now. It's not original any more though. Possibly due to bad petrol (ethanol?) at least one of the carburettors seized and this resulted in an engine fire. Luckily the gas pump kept running and the engine flooded, extinguishing the fire, but the engine had to be replaced. I found a fairly fresh one in a bashed up GTV6 so it is now an injection.

I don't know, they drive well but other than the Giulia Super I always found Alfa sedans from 1970 on to be blocky, chunky looking, less attractive than competing products from Fiat. This, the 75, Alfetta, the 1750 and 2000 Berlina....just not as visually attractive to me. And honestly by the late 80s there was a lot of ugly (Croma, 164, etc.) I can see why some of the sedan models did not sell well.
