The Forgotten Island: Adak Alaska Caribou

1200 miles down the Aleutian Chain, Adak Island is near the western extent of the Andreanof Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Alaska's southernmost city, Adak, is located on the island. Once home to a former Naval Base this reminiscent of a ghost town community is now host to a herd of caribou. Free from predators these caribou roam the island freely among abandoned military barracks and treeless wind blown tundra. One of the most unique places to hunt caribou in Alaska.

Great can’t wait. Been 42 years since I left Adak. Haven’t seen much Video on the Island since I left. was 18 when I arrived on the Rock 🪨 20 years old when I left. A friend of mine in Navy stationed with me on Adak caught an 235lb Halibut and We Soaked the meat 🥩 for 3 days in Beer 🍺 😁🤣😂🤣 Called Beer battered halibut. Ordered a Keg of Beer 🍺 from Anchorage and ate fish 🐠 and drank Beer for days !!!! We had a Cabin out in the Tundra !!! Generator and All 🤣😂

I spent a week on that island Jan 87. Never thought water could be so cold and not be frozen!

I was Stationed NSGA-Adak Alaska in the Navy 80-81. 395 days on the ROCK 🪨 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

@MitchellBrown-su9dc I've heard from many folks regarding Adak which really surprised me in the beginning. What an amazing experience that must of been. This place has an amazing history. One of my favourite remote locations to learn about. I've always found fried wild game heart to be a tad rubbery and chewy. Not exactly filet mignon.

Adak indeed is an amazing place. I could spend most of my time just exploring the island and its history and the naval base. Caribou hearts excellent but not overcooked. The texture is definitely different than a backstrap or tenderloin would be. I prefer it lightly fried in flour, butter, onions, salt n pepper.

My dad was stationed there during World War II, in the army. After his three-year stint they asked him if he would like to stay on as a civilian and work there. He said hell no

Yes. I imagine after three years stationed there. He’d probably want to get back to civilization because Adak is literally at the end of nowhere. It’s a beautiful place and I love to go down there to chase critters and fish but long-term it’s too remote.

There’s something special about ADAK Caribou. This heard roams on this island with zero predators, and all they have to worry about is staying warm, and eating until their heart content. The best tasting Caribou I’ve had in the entire state of Alaska.
