Welcome to this educational video where we'll explore the fascinating history of Banjul, the capital city of The Gambia.
The founding of Banjul dates back to the 17th century when the area was inhabited by various ethnic groups including the Mandinka, Fula, and Wolof. However, it wasn't until the arrival of European traders in the mid-1600s and the subsequent establishment of the British Empire that Banjul began to take shape.
In 1816, the British established a settlement on the island that would later become Banjul, naming it St. Mary's Island and creating a base for their expansion into the interior regions of The Gambia. The settlement grew rapidly as it became a major trading center for goods such as ivory, gold, and slaves.
In 1823, the settlement was renamed Banjul in honor of its founder, Admiral Sir Banastre Tarleton - a name that remains to this day. Rapid growth continued throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, as the city became an important administrative center for the British colonial government.
Following independence in 1965, Banjul became the capital city of The Gambia and has continued to grow and develop into a vibrant cultural and economic center. Its rich history and diverse cultural heritage are on full display throughout the city, from its traditional markets and historic landmarks to its bustling waterfront and lively nightlife scene.
So join us on this journey as we explore the founding of Banjul, its role in the history of The Gambia, and its bright future as a global destination for culture, commerce, and community.

They began to immigrate in Banjul not long ago. Could you talk about those Soninkes that you speak of? How did they get there? When they got there, who are they? I don't understand. You say Soninke non Muslim, because since the Ghanaian era, all the Soninkes ended up converting to Islam. Could you talk more about them? do not believe the books of these Europeans

was killed in 1864. By 1880 the religious aspect had all but disappeared, and the conflicts were carried on by war chiefs such as Musa Mollah, Fodi Silla, and Fodi Kabba. If these are the names you are talking about these are not pagan they're Muslim and the first name Musa mollah is a Fulani right now I am making a video I will get to the history of musa mollah also if you're referring to these people i will brake down the history for you
