"The sort of development of this area you would have, if it was to be controlled by market Mechanisms would be just to level everything down, build apartments with a great view of the lake water, and it would be super highly priced. But there wouldn't be a fox around anymore."

I really like Christiania as a case study for different ideas. It's interesting to see how the same community-based NIMBYism that is so pervasive everywhere is also really strong in Christiana, with not a lot of dense housing at all despite being situated in the middle of Denmark's biggest city. Other aspects of the experiment I really love though, like the community volunteering to get public works done. Municipalities could learn from this, there are a lot of people with free time looking to have an impact. Instead of always hiring expensive companies to maintain parks or do shovel work they could tap into this desire to make a difference and get things done cheaper and better by giving people the chance to help. I know a town in Germany that renovated its public pool that way when there weren't enough funds to cover the full project.

It's a beautiful place with a strong feeling of freedom. It's so sad that there are not more of these places in the world. Would be interesting to compare the rate of depression with other districts in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen doesn’t have a housing problem. It has areas that are very sought after that are expensive, and I’d argue that that is quite ok. Awful as that area is from a planning perspective, Ørestad is quite affordable and close to the city center. 1/2 an hour from Copenhagen centre you are able to find lots of affordable housing, primarily because those areas are also planning disasters from the 60s (Copenhagen west). As Jan Gehl said, we need to look at the areas surrounding Copenhagen and make those better.

Just because Ørestad isn't as eyewateringly expensive as Central Copenhagen does not make it affordable.

Obviously you need a residence permit to not get deported, but other than that Christiania is open to all nationalities. Now that migration has become more difficult it's less common, but back in the day Christiania was a place of community for especially South American immigrants fleeing civil wars in the 80's and 90's, Tibetans fleeing occupation, and other non-european diasporas. A lot of people who have their daily comings and goings on Christiania dont even speak Danish. Source: My mother lived there for a while, and her best friend is Venezuelan who came to there.

@nicholaswoollhead6830
@nicholaswoollhead6830 2 жыл бұрын
It requires some doing. You have to sign up for the waiting list, which to some extent is weighted against how much you NEED to be there. So they are more likely to accept applicants who would otherwise be homeless. Then you have to present yourself at a meeting where they vote to let you move in or not. It's a though nut because to stay "open" they have to be pretty strict on who they let in. I do, however, recommend moving to Copenhagen and hanging out there a bunch as I used to do.

@@nicholaswoollhead6830 I figured it'd be very tough like that. And as much as I love the spirit of the place, Id rather a homeless person have a home than I live there. I find it ironic that he complains that the government would build large apartment complexes, when that in fact would be more social, allowing more people into the city, compared to large plots for single families. That can be done without sacrificing all the nature.

I would say the biggest problem of Christiania is that they have absolutely no incentive to increase the housing supply despite being in the middle of Denmark's biggest city. Whether it's through high housing prices or a long waiting list, either way you're not getting a roof over your head.

It's still too individualistic. The fact that each house has a different style, with no concern for a broader vision, demonstrates this. They also don't seem to have a religion. They could make one up, even if it's like a football team. Division of function by sex would also be cool.
