Freo cut Peter Bell after his first year and he went free to North in the pre-season draft. Oops. And they traded rights to a 17y/o Mathew Lloyd to Essendon for not much.

Honestly the overall coaching at Fremantle has to be below par. How many blokes have they recruited who were significantly better players at their former clubs? Colin Sylvia, Cam McCarthy, Harley Bennell, Nathan Wilson, Rory Lobb, Jesse Hogan. Non of them were the same player once they got to Fremantle.

To add insult to injury they rated Graham Polak at #1 on th 2001 draft, so even if they didn't trade th 1st pick they STILL would have lost out

You forgot to mention that Freo originally drafted Lachie Neale At Pick 58. Shouldn't that have been a part of your assessment of Fremantle's drafting decisions? You obviously had an agenda here. Biased reporting. If you want to do a comparison of every clubs drafting decisions over the last 30 years then do that comparison. Not this hit job for views

Hey, appreciate your comment but I’m not sure what you mean? The video is about Freo’s terrible trades of the past, not who they drafted so not sure what me mentioning Lachie Neale being drafted at 58 has any relevance to the topic. I did do a vid on Lachie Neale though so you can check that out. Secondly not sure where you detect bias? What am I being biased to? I did my research and found that the Docker’s are repeat offenders when it came to trading top talent/picks and thought it would make an interesting video. And hey I’m not suggesting they’re a terrible club it just seems they’ve gotten the short end of the stick one too many times when it came to trades.

@@flairfooty Thanks for your response. Let me just repeat the title of your video. "Fremantle have made the worst trade deals in AFL history". Unless your title is misleading, you have attempted to make a comparison video. Ie. Fremantle have made worse trade deals than all the other clubs in the entire AFL history. If you have done your research as you state and if this is not a biased Fremantle hit job then show your workings. Show all the other terrible trade deals done by all the other teams in "AFL history". Show how Fremantle are worse than other teams bad draft decisions. As it stands, it is biased and it is a hit job for views.

@@neilhart5775 and to also add, like yeah we have made some bad trades, but the majority of these were players wanting to leave for one reason or another. Wtf can the club do about that? Hold them and then get nothing for them the following year?

No, the title is not misleading, it’s an opinion. You don’t have to agree with it, but clearly when a club traded away a guaranteed Andrew Mcleod, Lachie Neale, 2 top 5 draft picks and get little in return, I would call them some terrible trades. And when you miss out on getting players like Luke hodge, Matthew Lloyd, Sam Mitchell and Scott Lucas then yeah it puts you up there as potentially making the worst trades in AFL history. And I could show other bad trade deals but when I researched, it was Fremantle popping up time and time again so the burden of proof would be for you to show me a club that has made as many terrible deals in the AFL era. And I’m in no way hating on Fremantle. I can understand it’s a difficult job to pick the right player and you may think you’re getting a good deal. But that’s the risk they run and unfortunately has led them in getting the short end of all these trades.

It’s a good mention. But when I was making my list I tried to look at the full trade and how it ended in hindsight. The Bennell trade even though freo lost in that one, you couldn’t really blame them as Bennell was a gun but just had attitude problems. On the other hand you’d scratch your head on why they would easily trade McLeod and happily take Bennell. Maybe they didn’t want the same thing to happen where they missed out on a potential talent

I think they’ve definitely learned from their mistakes. Drafting and trading on the whole I think has been better in the AFL it’s just the natural progression of things. It was early days back then, teams couldn’t even really get the number 1 draft pick correct in the 90s

The Trent Croad coming to Fremantle was even more of a disaster given they gave him a $750,000 riverside apartment in Fremantle (2001 prices) on top of a healthy salary and played him out of position. Croads last game for the Hawks the year before was an elimination final at the G where he drifted into the forward line while playing back and kicked a solid bag of like 6-7 I think. Freo thought he was the answer to their forward line issues and played him as a forward who did sweet FA. Returned to Hawks and won a premiership as a back man where he was always solid.

Another thing with players leaving us is apparently Fyfe is a hard player to play with and being captained under him.

This is probably my most repeated AFL trades gone horribly wrong story. Normally you would think trading out a 350 game, AFL life member with 2 Norm Smiths for a key forward that didn't even play a full season would be the worst trade in a clubs history. Fremantle literally did that, TWICE

Gilbert would be another shocker, letting go of Jeff Farmer! But at least they got him back. groom was part of the McLeod trade which I mentioned and Hutton was a zone selection so can’t really blame them for going for him.

@@BDub2024 they definitely lost out when they delisted him, but i wouldn't necessarily say trading to get him back was a bad trade, even though they let go of jess sinclair and Daniel motlop Bell was still solid for them

@@flairfooty Its more that they never should have delisted him, so they wasted players and draft picks. It was the example of two big egos at the club. Neesham and Bell. And Bell is still causing chaos with all those guys leaving when he is in charge of the footy department and doing list management. Now he is director of special projects and strategy. So basically his strategy going forward is to have the special project of becoming CEO and dumping Garlick.

Tony Modra retired at Freo same with Headland I think and Brad Hill was really keen to leave. Just because a player leaves a club doesn’t mean they’re poor at retaining them. Most of the Vics want to not be in W.A for some weird reason.

tbf is u look at what freo gave up and then got for brad hill a few years later it was actually the epitome of buying low and selling high. got him for pick 23 if I remember, played his career best years at freo and then got back essentially picks 10 58 and a future second.
