LYRICS:
The French Brexit song
Oh England, you broke our heart
When you first voted to depart
But before you off and pack, one thing
We want our language back
Oh England, you went your way
But for this exit you will pay
Without French letters you’ll be lost
It’s time for you to count la cost
No you can’t have joie de vivre without le français
You’ll lose yourself without our cul-de-sac
There is no fizz without champagne
Though you can gladly keep your rain
We’re taking all our French words back
No, you cannot drive a car without a chauffeur
There’s no déjà-vu without déjà vu
What’s sex without its lingerie?
Piers Morgan without his toupée
We really feel miserable for you
Oh England, you’re such a fool
Did they teach you nothing at school
With politics you’ve been risqué
For Brexit is just an entrée
Yes England, this is the start
Of picking allies à la carte
Soon the whole world will turn on you
It isn’t nice, but it is true
Cause you cannot rendez-vous without le francais
So many things that you will sorely miss
Like etiquette and ambulance
Without us you don’t stand a chance
You’ll die without our life saving French kiss
Key change!
No you can’t have marriage without fiancé
Without us your soufflé will never rise
Don’t bother to RSVP
We’ve buggered off for après ski
You didn’t get an invite, quelle surprise
Your cheeseboard will be blue without
Roquefort and camembert
When you can’t find the menu
You won't, because it isn’t there
When you smell of faint regret
Instead of fine eau de cologne
You only have yourselves to blame
For dining all alone
No you can’t eat à la mode without le francais
You’ll have to scoff it all off one big plate
Alas there will be no encore
Now that you’ve bolted your back door
For a referendum you will have to wait
And if you want our bel esprit
I’m sorry darling, c’est la vie
You should have voted stay, it is too late
Yes, you should have voted stay it is too late

The bulk of the language in spoken and written texts is from this source. As a statistical rule, around 70 percent of words in any text are Anglo-Saxon. Moreover, the grammar is largely Anglo-Saxon.[1] A significant portion of the English vocabulary comes from Romance and Latinate sources. Estimates of native words (derived from Old English) range from 20%-33%, with the rest made up of outside borrowings. A portion of these borrowings come directly from Latin, or through one of the Romance languages, particularly Anglo-Norman and French, but some also from Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish; or from other languages (such as Gothic, Frankish or Greek) into Latin and then into English. The influence of Latin in English, therefore, is primarily lexical in nature, being confined mainly to words derived from Latin roots.[2] So where did you get 60%?

Many French words did arrive in English due to the Norman Conquest. However, many words came later as well and the words that came with the Norman Conquest are generally less obvious than the ones highlighted in the video. Little do most people know, but even basic everyday words like 'blue', brown', 'age', 'people' and 'piece' come from French as well, as do incredibly inconspicuous ones like 'catch', 'nice', 'waste' and 'wait'.

Yes I agree about the spoken English vernacular but approximately 60% of all the English language is from French. Mark Gable Enough with the wishful thinking already. England is not what you think. The whole world is not what you think. Today, even the global market is not what you think. Long gone the days of nationalistic (racist & xenophobic) pride. This is not 17th century. England and it's people think they can sit on many chairs. The one from the past, the one from the present and the one from the future. Cannot happen. England (UK) was one of the founding members of the very Democratic EU, in every step of the way, and the EU is a UNION not a country or a dictatorship to enslave you. If you haven't gotten that simple notion yet, after 45 years as a member, then I think you must agree, Seneca was right, the English never learn.
@PaulSmith-pf2uq
@PaulSmith-pf2uq 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Gable Language does not work the way you think. There is next to nothing of English in the English language. It's 1/3 Greek, 1/3 Latin and the rest is French, German, Danish, Spanish and whatever the people here were speaking before the Romans arrived 2.000 years ago. The English people were for the most part of their history, illiterate and therefore uneducated. There was no way of writing anything down anyway as there was no alphabet. The Languages in Britannia were getting enriched by the Romans, the Danish, the Anglos and the Saxons who invaded in different centuries. it was only after the Normans arrived 1000 years ago that the old English, as called today, got a huge infusion of French. by 1300 CE, the monks started teaching Latin to the sons of the rich people. By 1500 CE Greek was introduced. The reason for Greek and Latin was so the students could read all the books the monks were copying. Then America declared Independence and, if I'm not mistaken, the English won in the House of Representatives to be the common speaking language of the USA, by one vote away from the Greek. If not for that one vote, everybody would speak Greek now. But never mind that. It was thanks to American culture, Hollywood, music and books, that English spread, so don't be so cocky about it. It's not even YOUR language, it's not even A language. It's more of a system of languages, included to infuse and enrich the English culture with everything that wasn't there before, like food, fashion, philosophy, physics, mathematics, literature, art, politics, the Law, high level debate and much more. I hope that helps.
@PaulSmith-pf2uq
@PaulSmith-pf2uq 4 жыл бұрын
Gary Shropshire Yours, is a very simplistic and ignorant way of describing European history and that's because the education system failed to provide you with academic knowledge and critical thinking. And you are lazy to check too. The Nazis (and not Germany) were bombing Britain, which means they were here alright. If it wasn't for the Americans and their ulterior motives, you would have been invaded for sure. And I should point out to you that even though other countries were invaded, the people in them were fighting against the nazis in the street. If the UK had reacted properly when the Nazis invaded Austria or the north of Czechoslovakia, that WW2 catastrophe might never have happen.

Chris - Germany would have won WW1 if Britain stayed neutral, with no blockade on its ports. And France would still be in fascist hands if English speakers hadn’t liberated it. And the idea you could displace the Germans without damaging towns & cities is absurd. Should we have reasoned with the Nazis and sent them flowers instead?
@Chris-ky1so

Benzknees Are you really saying that bombarding cities, which weren’t in anyway strategic points, was to win against the Germans ? Come on, everybody know that you did that only to destroy french cities, it’s common knowledge. And no, this is not an English speaker country that win the war, and by doing so liberated France, but a russian speaker one.
@Benzknees
@Benzknees 4 жыл бұрын
Chris - What nonsense, no army wastes resources when trying to beat their adversary. And the Soviets could not have pushed back the Nazis if they weren’t being supplied by English speaking countries, the Nazis blockaded by the same, and large parts of the Nazi war effort dedicated to defending North Africa and Western Europe. The ugly truth is the French gave in and then collaborated with the Nazis only too readily, making the war longer than it should have been.

@@Chris-ky1so ‘…everybody know that you did that only to destroy (F)rench cities, it’s common knowledge.’ That’s a pretty ridiculous point of view. Not sure how we Brits and our American friends could have liberated France without, sadly, a vast amount of destruction taking place. For instance, the city of Caen, whose Nazi occupiers put up a fanatical defence due to its strategic importance - the advance from the D-Day landings was halted there by them. And it had to be virtually levelled to the ground before they were finally rooted out. But perhaps you know better than the Generals in command did?
