The Foucaud and the Le Chatelier families are among the 20,000-odd French nationals in Singapore. They have lived here for more than 10 years. Cheese shop owner Morgane started her family here and sends her children to local schools to learn Chinese. French artist Hélène paints murals on local buildings here as one way to connect with locals.

It's a good place for parents, but terrible place for teenagers and kids who are growing up and want the freedom to have fun. Most expat teenagers hate Singapore (and you can't blame them because Singapore has such a strict culture against party life, which is what teens want and do around the globe). In the other hand, parents absolutely love Singapore; low taxes; easy to get around; everything is mentally clean and lastly it is very safe.

I think Westerners in general have been at the top of the food chain for so long, every other race or ethnicity are seen to be below them. Why do many Asian countries treat foreigners from Western countries well? Because we see them as upper class. When we look at Pinoys or Banglas, I am pretty sure their experiences will not be the "friendly and welcoming Singaporean". The same thing happens when we go to Western countries. We are the Pinoys and the Banglas in their eyes and so, we are not treated to the same "welcoming friendliness" in Western countries. Yes I know what I am saying is very politically incorrect but the truth is the truth. People will say it's about multiculturalism etc but the truth is that it is about class. If China/Asia had went through the industrial revolution and had colonies from Africa to Europe, dominating the local Africans, Arabs, Europeans in the past instead, we would have become the expats in Europe today, treated to the same welcoming and friendliness from the local Europeans. It's always about class. Class recognition is inbuilt in our DNA and genetics. Even crustaceans have nervous systems in tuned with hierarchy. We cannot escape our biology.

@hilmir
@hilmir 3 жыл бұрын
@@trypeace6026 exactly. Paris is incredibly multicultural, in fact most cities are these days. and have been for the past few decades, thanks to globalisation. But if you compare Paris to New York, or Stockholm or even Berlin, there is a difference in attitude. French "nationalistic pride" is a thin veil for its discriminations and prejudice. I survived only because I learned to integrate without compromising my cultural identity. Not many are as successful. women and girls are still being targetted just for being in hijab, even though they are born and raised in France themselves. the criteria and definition of what the French accepts to be "normal" and "correct" is so narrow that it only permits them, everyone else is still an Other.
@hilmir
@hilmir 3 жыл бұрын
@@sleepyhead6468 the ideas you assume to be correct are based on hundreds of years of imperialism, colonialism, slavery and others questionable practices which today would be constituted as crimes against humanity. the choice to deconstruct or to simply believe is yours and yours alone. so blaming it on "biology" is just incredibly and extremely lazy.
