The French have cracked the German radio code on the Western Front and use their advantage for a counterattack at Matz. The already hastily planed German attack during Operation Gneisenau is called off after just 4 days. Meanwhile Austria-Hungary plans another offensive in Italy and German and Ottoman forces fight each other in Georgia.

Well folks, time for me to pay tribute to my great grandfather, NCO Chief Warrant Officer Henri Bruge. Enlisted as a professional heavy horseman in 1903. Fought Argonne, Champagne, Verdun, the Somme and the Chemin des Dames with the 4th cuirassiers (on foot, as horses were more a liability than an asset at the front) Finally MIA at the Matz on june 10th 1918.Wounded and cited several times. He left a widow and 4 orphans including my grandfather, the late Colonel Bruge and his brother General Bruge. This generation deserves a thought, as they were made of solid material, I suppose. Thanks Indy for a huge amount of work, and hi, Flo.

My Grandfather was one of those 200,000 who deserted in the first three moth of 1918 from the Austria Hungarian army. They said he ate a lot of "Palacsintas" a Hungarian Crepe.

Its a little mind blowing that a you tube channel has the most detailed, comprehensive, researched and entertaining documentary / information about the First World War that I think has been created to date. Outstanding. Came a little late to the party (mid 1917 or July 2017) - so when this finishes in November I shall go back to July 1914 / 2014 and cover what I missed...............looking forward to that.

6:00 So, 200,000 Hungarian soldiers had deserted in three months. Understandable, especially when the military's lack of food is detailed later on. My question is, where did the deserters go? Back home? Did they have to steal civilian clothes (and food) to make the trip? Was there any effort by the military to go after them?

My grandfather was a Pole who fought in A-H army on Carpathian and Italian front and deserted twice in 1918. The first time, he got caught and sent back to his company, second time, in the last days of the war, he succeeded and joined Haller's Polish Legions formed near Neapoli. The lack of food, hygiene and slave-like treatment from Austrian and German officers often described in his brother in law diary. No wonder so much people deserted.

He was quit a character in and by himself! He was a strange kind of racists, in that he had come to the conclusion that Africans didn't feel pain, the same way an European does, so he preferred using troops from Senegal‎ as assault troops. If you were assigned to his command, troops generally viewed it as a death sentence. But at the same time he wouldn't ask his troops to do something, that he wouldn't do... He is the only 4-star general, that I know of, that lead the attacks in person, during the war!

Mangin was nicknamed "the butcher" after the Chemin des Dames failed offensive. He was tough. Harsh. Hardly surprising from an officer not coming from a staff background like most, but as a colonial infantry combat seasoned veteran. And a quite skilled and successful one, specialised in offensive operations. But he was also opposed to the "offensive à outrance". And was recalled only after an enquiry cleared him. Considering him an incompetent/ butcher/both seems therefore quite unfair. Another note: during the first battle of the Marne, while leading his division, he fought alongside his men. Literaly. So the "butcher" was not just opposed to useless slaughter, he also didn't ask others to do what he hadn't already done himself, and was still ready to do.

J'ai lu que Mangin était excellent durant la guerre de mouvement mais pas bon durant la guerre de position. Il était peut-être le meilleur élément pour lancer cette contre-offensive. J'ai commencé le livre > par Nicolas Offenstadt (2012). Peut-être que ça parle de lui.

So Mangin was one of these typical French bad asses, who eventually broke the back of the Germans. Type De Gaulle, who only survived because he became a POW.

That honestly goes against a lot from what we saw. I mean, he launched an attack on Fort Douaumont even when it didn’t have any strategic or tactical benefits to it and when the odds were completely in the enemy’s favor (let’s remember, it was HE, not Nivelle, that suggested the attack in the first place). He also fully supported Nivelle’s offensive despite the all too obvious signs of disaster. To say both failed disastrously would be an understatement.

No, it a story of Incompetance of SOME.. you are mistaking incompetance of a few with incompetance of all.... Perhaps you should learn the difference. Of course, you, with a knowledge of 100 years of combined arms warfare have 100 years of 20:20 vision to work with.... so: 1) Do not associate incompetance of a few with incompetance of all 2) Learn what the commanders of the time a) Knew, and b) had availabe (including communications) 3) Learn more about the conditions in the field, by 1917 and 1918 breaking INTO the enemies line was the easy part, breaking THROUGH was the hard part.... 4) Learn more aboiut the war full stop, the Lions led by Donkeys meme is exactly that... a meme....

One key to victory for Italy deserves attention- mobile reserve divisions, Diaz's stroke of genius. 13 divisions and 6000 trucks, equidistant 3-4 miles behind the front all along the 370 mile front, ready to go where and when Diaz needed them. At Monte Grappa under the able defensive commander Giardino and his 4th Army, this would prove vital.

Was arguing with someone who kept excusing the bad generals of WW1 saying they couldn't help it and didn't have hindsight... They had years of hindsight to look back on, and explicit orders to maintain a defense in depth, which they ignored! I don't think you can excuse something like that.

Question for Out of the Trenches: In 1918, United States soldiers (and Marines assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division) started wearing shoulder sleeve insignia so that they could be identified by their division. What methods of identifying troops by division did other nations use?

Hi Indy&crew! No mention about the sinking of the Szent Istvan battleship by the Italians on June the 10th 1918? There's a video about that sinking, one of the few that shows a battleship sinking!!

Quick addition - on June 10th the SMS Szent István was sunk by Italian motor boats. An interesting operation and one that helped establish the MAS as a major part of Italian naval operations.

You're right. I checked the documentary series "The First World War" (2003), episode 10 -- 17:32 -- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9GqgJWrv7necXU.html -- and Mangin said that if the Allies didn't invade Germany, then Germany would not admit that it had been defeated, which is what happened.

it's what they just talked about, Operation Gneisenau. The Germans attacked between Montdidier and Noyon and were stopped at the river Matz, north of Compiegne (they misplaced it on the map). They also tried to attack west of Soissons in the direction of Coeuvres and Villers-Cotterets but once again, they were stopped by French counter-attacks.

I would be interested in hearing more about the Finnish movement to sovereignty, I find this really interesting because in 1920 Finland was almost certainly the most democratic nation on Earth, if I remember it was the only one that had pretty much universal sufferage, but I know nothing about how it happened....
