When John Astin finished filming this, he came back to California and told his son Sean about the fantastic time he had on the set, especially working with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. That’s what had Sean calling his manager and telling him to let Sean know any time that they were going to be casting for a future project. He was driving on the freeway when he got the call about the LOTR casting, and immediately pulled off to find a bookstore and get the book. After reading, he knew he wanted to play Sam.

Sometimes when an actor knows they’re perfect for the role and pursue it, they usually get cast. Sean was young, already kind of short and, sorry Sean, chubby. He is also a good actor There was no way he wasn’t getting that role. Same with Elijah wood. He was born to play Frodo.

When Peter Jackson started making this film he knew the CGI needed for the ghost was going to be important, so he sunk a lot of time and effort into building the group to do it, that group is now known as "Weta Digital", which have done work on everything from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to the "Marvel" movies and considered to be one of the best groups in the business. Also, this film is criminally underrated and one of Michael J. Fox's best films.

This proved he could not only do the special effects but tell a story that has a lot going on. The Frighteners has a lot of balls in the air when you think about it and it's easy to follow. There's also a logic that it creates in its own ghostly world. The rules are there and it sticks to them. It's basically a current day fantasy.

@@JDelwynn Yeah, I remember that while the movie was very well recieved overall (there were Oscars involved, no?), reviews specifically mentioned that the special effects were pretty impressive and really helped tell the story. The thing is that the Reaper ghost did actually involve a puppet for the most part, proving that you just can't beat good practical effects. I was actually pretty surprised when I watched the FX featturete.

I saw this in the theater & I knew nothing about it, I just decided to see a movie & that’s what was showing next. I really enjoyed it & was a little disappointed with its box office showing. I definitely gave it a good recommendation to everyone I knew. This movie also made me feel somewhat comfortable when I heard Peter Jackson was doing a live version of Lord of the Rings, since I remember thinking he did a good job with this movie (I still had many doubts. I was a big LotR fan & thought the book was basically unfilmable).

A personal anecdote: I entered the movie theatre during previews and it being so dark, I sat on the aisle in the rear so I didn't trod on any of the audience finding an ideal seat. When the film ended and the lights came up, I discovered I was the only one in the theatre. I remember exiting the theatre (in a 10-screen cineplex) to a handful of audience waiting in line for the next showing totally surprised only one person left the previous screening. This movie wasn't well-received by the critics at the time but given Jackson's work from Lord of the Rings on, a lot of people are discovering his earlier films are worth the watch. Dead Alive is a fun endurance test that may be the most gory movie ever made. The Frighteners is a solid horror comedy. And finally, Heavenly Creatures can best be described as a macabre and fantastic work of art.

He was also amazing in the one Babylon 5 episode that he showed up in (S1E16, "Eyes"), playing a character that was _overall_ very likeable, but Combs managed to play him just a _little_ bit "off" so that the relevant main characters couldn't really warm up to him... It must have been a fine line to walk, but he pulled it off incredibly well 🥰

Should take a look at Jackson's first above ground movie from 1994 that critics actually began to take him seriously. It's called "Heavenly Creatures", a true film that tells the story of two teens who murder one their mothers so they can be together forever. It's a beautifully dreamily shot film that also introduced Kate Winslet as one of the children.

Judge was played By John Astin the original Gomez Addams. He's a fantastic comedy actor and star of my favourite comic sequel Return of the killer Tomatoes and a great comic western Evil Roy Slade. For the record I think Heavenly Creatures is Jackson best film. Its so different from anything he has ever done. Its also his last lower budget movie so the talent is on the screen and not in the bank accounts of the actors.. Also the two leads careers really took off but in very different directions..

Jeffrey Combs ( Agent Milton Dammers), he's so talented that people don't recognize him everytime, did a lot of voices, movies, and TV show (played a bunch of aliens in the Star Trek series) And no, he doesn't have such big black eyes, another disguise and another fantastic character you'll never see again (you still can see lots of Combs craziness tho) My favorite actor since the first time I saw him, in the cult classic movie Reanimator (1985) I hope you've seen this one by the way 😉

The Secret Of My Success is one of MJF's less known comedies - it's basically a light romantic comedy version of Wall Street with a message that went against the yuppie 80's zeitgeist (the hero becomes _less_ corrupt, and his ideas ironically enough find a listening ear due to the sexism and elitism in the corporate world creating allies for him).

I think 8/10 is a very fair assessment of this film. I love it, and it's criminally underrated as a whole, but it's not quite a "perfect" film. I agree with you that the romantic side story feels a bit forced and unnecessary and think it would work better as more of a "buddy cop" type relationship, but aside from that it's pretty top notch. The effects hold up surprisingly well for it's age and at the time it was released it was mind-blowing and creepy af! It's also one of the few truly unique films I've ever seen. Try as I might, I just can't think of anything else that came before that has an even remotely similar plot or story. I've seen elements of this story pop up from time to time in films since it was released, but nothing really prior. A true shame that it never really had much success.

Not sure it counts as behind the scenes, but... there are heavy references to the fact that the Judge isn't just a random Gunslinger named Judge or was a Judge, he is Phantly Roy Bean Jr. aka Judge Roy Bean, frequently known as The Hanging Judge Roy Bean. There is an actual event, in which allegedly the ghost of Judge Bean and his dog were claimed to have cleaned out a cheat's money, so the Judge having his dog, being called the Hanging Judge, even much of his appearance which looks like a rotting and emaciated form of the pictures of the real Roy Bean. Scarily, in 2008 Johnny Charles (not Bartlett, but as seen in the film, that is Johnny's first & middle name) went on a killing spree in Florida. As per the Miami New Times, "he will go down as one of the area's most prolific - and vengeful - serial killers." The Re-Animator movie series, Necronomicon, Doctor Mordred: Master of the Unknown, the House on Haunted Hill movies, the Attic Expeditions, and Satanic: Hell's Halfway House probably are good as head canon history of Special Agent Milton Dammers.

It's so awesome to see other people out there enjoying it as well. I know what you mean about "trying to figure out the story" of stuff and I really hate doing that as well. As much as I can I love to just sit back and watch something as if I've never seen a movie before. Far too often things get ruined because we've seen the same tropes used in a bunch of other films and so we're always trying to figure out which one it'll be. I love when I'm able to just block it all out and enjoy something. I find I can actually enjoy a lot of stuff more because I'm not comparing it to other things.

The Judge was played by John Astin, the original Gomez Addams from the TV show.

“ for 96, this is some pretty impressive cg work”. And a moderately budgeted film as well.

also The Judge was John Astin who you would know from Addams Family, Batman , Return of the Killer Tomatoes, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The New Scooby-Doo Movies, The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote, Mr. Boogedy, They Came from Outer Space, The Nanny, Johnny Bravo, and Taz-Mania among many other things you should at the very least see Halloween with the New Addams Family and maybe some of those others.

In the outtakes for the movie Michael kept calling the Judge by Doc, thinking he was in the Back to the Future series once again lol

The 2002 videogame Timesplitters 2 had a multiplayer level set in a creepy, abandoned, green-tinted hospital. I've always wondered if that level was inspired by this movie's final setpiece.

It failed at the box office mainly because American audiences just didn't "get" Peter Jackson's humour. That year 2 films had Don't Fear the Reaper as the end credits music - this version by the NZ band The Muttonbirds and the other Scream with the original group Blue Oyster Cult.

The USA has never looked more like New Zealand(Lyttelton to be precise), NZ often looks distinctive in movies for some reason - maybe the light.

I love this movie hahaha!! Fuck fact that I haven't seen anybody mention : R Lee Ermey who plays the army Sergeant Hiles is basically parodying his role as Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.
