A great video of a wonderful little car. Had a high school buddy who had a bug eye back in the day. I was always envious and dreamed of owning one, too, but equipped with a Judson blower. Alas, life changes didn’t allow that to happed. Thanks for another very classy presentation and trip down memory lane.

I enjoyed when Donald said, it’s a practical car. Yup, my father had a new Bug Eyed ‘59 that he raced SCCA. His wife and us three kids fit inside. Me being the youngest, I was stationed in the boot! What fun... He once took me for a drive in it around the Lime Rock race course.

The 2nd car I owned was a 61 Bugeye. Kept it for nearly 20 years. Also owned a '67 AH 3000 Mk3 BJ8 . Bought new when I returned from my 1st tour in VN. Lot of fun and many years of enjoyment with them. Thanks for the memories!

I'm 36, and just bought a 1969 Mk 4 Sprite. Unfortunately, it's going to take 2 weeks to get a license plate, do it's not legal to drive, but I've taken it around the suburbs a few times.

Donna Mae Mims In 1963,won the Sports Car Club of America national racing championship driving a pink Austin-Healey 1959 Bugeye Sprite that once had belonged to Dr. Jonas Salk. She won the 1963 Class H championship after competing in ten sanctioned races in her Austin Healey Sprite. She placed first in two of the ten races, placed second three times. In the twenty-year history of the Sports Car Club of America to that point, Mims was the first woman to win a national racing championship.

Oh.......how I agree with everything you say. Sometimes it's the features you wouldn't expect that make the car. Yes, my Frog is fantastic fun to drive (and surprisingly rapid with its 948cc), but it's the practicality that is the icing on the cake; you mention the boot space - and unbelievably, we can easily fit the wife's wheelchair in there and go off to shows together. That's not going to happen in a later Spridget.

You remind me very much of my Uncle, he used to wear blazers, bow ties, cravats, drove many sports cars, he had flown torpedo bombers off aircraft carriers in tge War and got shot bdown attenpting to torpedo the Tirpitz, where it was hidden in a Nprwegian fjord. Though he was a white Englishman, you mannerisms, the style of your speech.... After WW2 je fid various piloting jobs but was needing adventure, So he took a job in a new Flying Doctor/ Air Ambukance service in 1963. Air ttavel was very expensive then, so he bought an old landrover and drove to the new job, they left London to drive to Kitwe in Zambia in the area generally know as the copper belt. Its in the far north of the country by the Peoples Republic of the Congo, so I doubt is as safe now. 1969. We were on our way to Hong Kong - my Dad had a job there so on the way we visited my Aunt Uncle and their mad boys, Ship to Capetown, plane to Pretoria, change planes fly to Lusaka where we are picked up by Terry, my Uncle in a single engined little plane, 200 or so miles, never very high - it was magic. We got to Kitwe, at their house, he had an Austin Healey, not a sprite sadly, but he did have a blue blazer and bow tie. TBF he took the bow off fairly rapidly once he was home, replaced by a cravat. JUst seeing you know brought back floods of the most amazing memories. Thank you

Having viewed a number of these video's l am very impressed with the immaculate presentation of all that l've seen . Add this not only to Donald's imput but add in a generous helping of Jay Leno then you have the perfect recipe for a top class show ! And yes, the humble Sprite raced at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans. Thankyou .

Great Video Donald. Back in the late 1969 one would not buy a bugeyed sprite, they would buy 2. One for parts and one to drive. Often they were sold that way. If I remember correctly they were built by MG. Sub-contracted by AH. Correct me if you know better..

I remember my neighbors mom bought herself a Triumph TR6. We crammed in the “seat” and drove top down. That was so much fun. What happened to these British companies? How did they lose their souls and eventually go out of business?

It was the Japanese cars that forced out BMC; whom were totally reliant on sales in the U.S. to stay viable. The Japanese cars soon consumed that market share. The VW Beetle also played a part in their demise.

@@james3452 yes. That makes sense. Same thing with the erosion of the US market share. All of the Japanese ,marketshare was taken from GM.

Zero Austin 7 parts. Lots of post war Austin A35 parts and a Morris minor rack. These steer better than Healey's earlier efforts. Sadly zero performance. But good fun.

Nice video Mr. Osborne. I just picked up on your channel when you had Jay on your show. Good marketing move. In your videos with jay you were slow poking around Newport. Here you are out in the country where you have room to move. Please consider not doing any car videos in Newport proper, get out in the country where they belong. Thank you.

Newport is on an island 6 miles wide by 9 long. The museum is in the city of Newport, near the center. Many of his "country" scenes take place in Middletown, the town next door. Unfortunately much of the farm land is now gone, the island is over developed. I swear a few more houses and it will sink.
