This Fujifilm XT3 mirrorless camera review is by no means the be all and end all of technical reviews but more a hands on look at my impressions of this camera and where it
The Fujifil XT3 came out in the fall with a big bang. It offers a great deal for doing still photos, but also video. Today I look at image quality, ergonomics and general desirability of the new fujifilm XT3. Most notable I also examine the somewhat quirky decision one has to make when deciding to go for the fujifilm xt3 vs the fujifiln xh1, or even versus just staying with your old and clunky xt2.

I just love my XT2. I know the XT3 is better but the main advantagss appear to be in video. I mainly shoot nature, portrait, macro, street and architecture. The auto focus is great for me in the XT2. In fact everyone raved about the XT2's auto focus when the camera first appeared. Yes the XT3 us even better. But for potraits and macro I'm using prime manual focus lenses anyway. And I'm not shooting high speed sports. I just don't feel compromised at all on the XT2. So I think I'll wait for the XT4.

Got my X-T3 Kit about 6 days ago from B&H and took it out of the box already set up in AUTO and started shooting videos all over the place and only gave myself time to read about 2 pages of the user manual, meanwhile just having too much fun with the camera shooting videos at anything that moves or not and checking out it's awesome killer video capabilities. Oh yes and it takes pictures too but I haven't gotten around that yet I,m still enjoying the video part. I enjoyed this review Jaques!

I have to respectfully disagree with two of your points: 1) There is no rear LCD screen design to date that "solves all issues". The design used on the X-H1, X-T2 and X-T3 favors stills shooters. It a) allows users to shoot in portrait orientation at ground level with grip and shutter at the top of the camera; b) it doesn't interfere with an L-bracket; c) it keeps the camera small and discrete when shooting street or in other situations where the user doesn't want to be obvious about what s/he is doing. The fully-articulating design favors video shooters, particularly when they need to be on camera. Speaking only for myself, I'm glad that Fuji has favored stills shooters thus far. 2) I was surprised to hear you suggest that the video feature set between the X-H1 and X-T3 is basically the same. That does your viewers a disservice. The X-T3 offers significantly higher bit rates, multiple formats, uncropped 4K30, internal and external 10-bit, 120FPS video that hasn't been upscaled, zebras, the ability to simultaneously record externally and internally, eye and face AF, and more. The only reason the X-H1 is in the conversation is because of IBIS. And the X-T3 should continue to get better, unlike the processor-limited X-H1. (To be clear, I'm not arguing that the X-H1 is a bad camera; only that the X-T3 is clearly superior outside of ergonomics and IBIS.) EDIT: This is personal preference but I would argue that the AF improvements in the X-T3 make the upgrade well worth it for X-T2 users who shoot action. The full PDAF coverage along with improved accuracy and speed in low light and reliable face/eye AF will definitely benefit people who shoot sports, wildlife, kids and street.

Nice lens! I just got the XT2 on sale 8/19 and it was $999 for the Silver graphite new. I love my XT1 and the T2 is even better in some ways. I noticed a big difference in how my 56mm f1.2 focuses with the XT2. I would imagine that the XT3 is even better in some ways but I didn't want to spend the extra $500. Good luck!

IBIS or a more articulating screen was not even a consideration (for video or stills) I dicdided to buy my XT3. Love how I can use my legacy manual focus lens's Canon, Nikon and Pentax 35mm film lenses (So called "full frame" and crop are stupid labels making APSC sound like it's cropping an image when it clearly is not) bad with great IQ easy to focus fast using Fuji's cool multiple manual focus assistance. Plus love how easy and intuitive Fuji's very ergonomic manual controls are. Fuji makes makes the art of photography fun again. Something Nikon, Canon and Sony have failed at. Also love how often Fuji updates firmware, often greatly improving camera functionality greatly.

In the cinema realm there is no IBIS.
@noact7560
@noact7560 5 жыл бұрын
Few people reviewing this camera understand this. It's also why the GH5s has no IBIS. Its newer than the GH5, but they realized that for professional video production, using these bodies for crash cams and b cams etc, having a solid mounted sensor instead of one that floats around on magnets, even when turned off, makes more a lot more sense engineering wise and is more appealing to video professionals who work specifically in cinema. Its meant to be put on a gimbal or simple sticks if you want that style. If you want that prosumer handheld videography setup without the need for a gimbal or tripod etc, then thats what their XH line is for.
@ggzzbb
@ggzzbb 5 жыл бұрын
@@noact7560 And so are all the cameras by black magic and red and arri. Even the small ones like the Alexa mini and the pocket, none has IBIS. The camera operator decides the framing and the movement according to the instructions. And not all cinema is handheld run and gun documentary style and if someone wants that, they can rent whatever Ibis fitted camera they like. A lot of KZfaqrs are projecting how they shoot video on everyone (need for Ibis,flippy screen, etc.) and maybe that's how their audience are. But to call Ibis a necessity in the cinema realm, that is just plain misinformation.

Hi Jacques, I have found the XT-2 quite awful with "back light" and "flat-low-light" I often miss moments as the camera hunts for focus in these scenarios. Have you managed to test this on the Xt-3? What were your thoughts, I'm thinking of upgrading. This is the one thing I really miss on my 5dMkIII that focus worked so incredibly well. On the video, nicely done, you come across really well and I love the fact you just speak from the heart about it but with experience to back it up. Thank you....i

Watch my lips: The philosophy of modern manufacturing thinking from any company (whatever they may produce) is make and sell as many products with as many different equations as possible in as many clones of more or less the same product as they can. In a nutshell, they can but won't put all eggs in one basket. They have the vision, the maths and the science to know what to include, or not, with the next batch of same-like products and as long as we abide and obey by buying the 'next' product, they will continue to do exactly what they've been doing for so many years. We have the power to change the rules, yet we don't and we just keep following the 'leader' instead.

I think that , at least for me, the XT2 has gone over and above my expectations. The XT3 and XH1 are beasts as well. But the key operative here is the word "hobby". Remember that cameras like the XT20 and XE3 might make more sense. Everything depends on what you do, what you want to shoot, and how you shoot. There is a great COMPARE function on the Fuji website that is very helpful. Check that out, you might be surprised by your conclusions. Who knows. Maybe the x100f might be a better pick

Hello Jacques. at 08:28 you say - "A flip out screen makes so much sense." Why, in your opinion, is that the case? I am genuinely curious as to your thinking, because for me (and every single videographer I have asked at all the weddings I have shot this year) it is not wanted. Th flip out screen is a burden, it is slow, obtrusive and conspicuous. And as a Nat Geo photographer recently wrote during a review of a camera with a tilt screen - "I’m a mild-mannered kind of guy, but any stills photographer who thinks a twisty screen is better than a tilt screen should be lined up and shot. With one finger you can instantly pull out the GX9’s screen and have a discreet, private view to whatever’s in front of you. During the old days of the GX8 I cannot count the number of times I went to reach for the screen but ran out of time for the pull & twist needed to get it into position." Thank you.
@JacquesGaines
@JacquesGaines 5 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of my opinion has to do with the fact that to pay the bills I am indeed a videographer. I can see how anyone with a stills workflow would prefer the tilt and not the flip screen. But for someone who does stills and video seriously, I think that the articulating screen makes so much more sense. The workflows where where the tilt screen wins out, IMHO, are few and far between. But not to be denied. Through the years I do, however, understand how someone can prefer the tilt to the flip. But I say to each their own and not line the person who disagrees with me and shoot them. But hey that is me.

I understand and respect your opinion Jacques, I must stress that ALL the videographers I've worked with do not want a tilt out screen either, it is even less useful for video as nobody shoots video vertically. The problem I really have though is this... you're an influencer via your (very good) KZfaq channel, so the fact that you want a flip out screen and other bloggers on KZfaq want one too kind of distorts the industry viewpoint. I can tell you... virtually every creative who doesn't vlog dislikes the flip out screen, we don't want a flip out screen and we don't want Fujifilm to be influenced by the minority KZfaq bloggers viewpoint who have the loudest voice. Thank you.

Oh boy. You say you respect my opinion but tell me that it isn't worth much. Although YOUR reality has a great deal of "industry professionals" that do not like the flippy screen, bear in mind the following. My main income source is video production and not vlogging. Check the portfolio at my site. I am no slump. Therefore, I am an industry professional that loves the flippy screen (Have you ever glanced at the Canon C cinema line by the way?) But there are a slew of video people directors of photography, and other pros I know as well that prefer the flippy screen and would not live without the articulating screen. So again I state that I personally prefer the articulating screen for video work as well as stills. I am not telling a lie. But your general message in the last comment is this. " How dare a vlogger tell other people who expect to do video or photos with a camera to not like a flippy screen" I am not distorting any industry viewpoint. I talk about my reality and respect and let each and every person make their own decisions. Worst is this statement "virtually every creative who doesn't vlog dislikes the flip out screen" where the hell did you get that? You are the pot calling the kettle black. I, at least , just tell my opinion. You categorically state your opinion as the truth for all. Wow. There is so much hidden bitterness in your comment. Also, as I appreciate your compliment as to the quality of my station, I feel that you lack a general understanding as to the intentions of my viewpoints. I suggest you unsubscribe as your discourse is mere rhetoric and so nonconstructive. The intention you have is to insult and not to discuss.

You have to take into consideration that the IBIS allows to shoot in a lower shutter speed. Therefore an ISO comparison between XT3/2 and XH1 have to consider that you might employ a lower ISO for the same exposure (and lower shutter speed). Considering that XH1 and XT3 low ISO performance are not so much improved, I would lean towards XH1 for stills in low light. Off course I am nor considering the price and size difference.

Actually no. A person moving cannot be frozen at 1/30 with IBIS because the compensation happens for the frame and not the subject. I would be afraid to shoot at 1/30th or even 1/60th in a church during a wedding. I could, in no way rely on IBIS to freeze motion.

Elias Pap, um, I remember when Fuji said they couldn’t put IBIS in their camera’s because of their X-mount: “Takashi Ueno and Shusuke Kozaki, Fuji Managers. “The diameter of our mount was designed for the image circle without IBIS. It means the amount of light at the corners is reduced when the sensor is shifted. We could correct it digitally, but we don’t want to do it: we don’t want to compromise our image quality.” Gee, and they came out with X-H1 with IBIS using the exact same X-mount without sacrificing IQ. Why can other manufacturers put IBIS in their camera’s that are the same size and smaller but Fuji can’t figure out how to do it? Maybe they should hire the engineers from those manufacturers to show them?

Elias Pap, and I own 3 Fuji camera’s and a bunch of their lenses as I’m a Fuji shooter. But I don’t own the X-H1 but if Fuji wants to be competitive then they’re going to have to add IBIS to more of their camera lines not just the X-H line because more manufacturers are coming out with camera’s, FF included and FF at the same price range, so they have to be competitive. Soon IBIS will be in camera’s and will be as natural as a hot shoe. I’m sure the real reason Fuji didn’t want to put IBIS in the X-T3 was because they didn’t want to cripple the X-H1 but they ended up crippling it anyway. And the X-H1 is now cheaper than theT3 and they threw in the battery grip. The X-H1 should have gotten the new sensor/processor before the X-T3. When the X-H2 comes out in 2021 it will have a new sensor/processor but the X-T4 will be right around the corner with a new sensor/processor or else there won’t be a reason to upgrade to the X-T4. And of course that will leave the X-H2 in the dust yet again. All I can say is that the XPro3 coming out this year better have IBIS. Fuji really has to stop regurgitating the exact same sensor/processor into different bodies. I love my Fuji camera’s but at this point if you buy one Fuji camera you bought them all.

1) Fuji will have flip - out screen in the future, more video centric camera, the XH2. If they do not, I'll call them idiots. 2) Back in the day, Olympus made an amazing thing for their E-1; that camera had small battery for the body, but the vertical grip needed double sized batteries that lasted for days of shooting. Fuji could do the same route for the XT3, no reason why not to...

The X-T series will not get IBIS. That is the X-H series cameras. Stop asking and complaining about something that they have explained is a size constraint.

I don't use the mechanical shutter on the Fujifilm cameras much. The electronic shutter fits my needs most of the time, with the added benefit of no shutter wear.@@TheOsfania

Thanks for the Great analysis. I have an X-T1 and an X-T2. I just bought the X-T2 with a vertical battery grip for $1100. I had planned to sell my X-T1 with a vertical battery grip, but, it will not bring enough money for me to part with it. I see the X-H1 is on sale for $1300 with a vertical battery grip and I am amazed that you can buy so much camera for so little money. These cameras depreciate quickly and I doubt that I need all the new features. The X-H1 would be the idea 2nd body for my X-T2. So, its a tough decision. I can only get about $500 for my X-T1 with the vertical battery grip and it is in like new condition. My head spins and I can not decide if I should sell my X-T1 for nothing and buy the X-H1.

Yuck. 100% disagree about an articulating screen. Can't stand those. Work well for video shooters I guess. But provide no improvement for me as a still shooter.

The man said it plain and simple; at this price, in this market, with these video specs the X-T3 should have had IBIS! End of story.

I guess you are the only one not anoyed by the jittery IBIS when paning. Its unusable for a paid job. For leasure I guess its ok
