Batman 1989 was directed by Tim Burton and starred Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Alfred Gough, Billy Dee Williams, and Jack Palance. It’s the 2nd theatrically released Batman film following Adam West’s (RIP) film from the 60s. This film is arguably one of the most iconic and influential comic book films of all time. There’s good reason for it too. The Batman we know today was without a doubt influenced by this movie. Upon rewatch tho I’ve come to realize this film may not hold up as well as many have claimed, at least in my opinion. I of course have my own standards for movies and what makes them good and I’m sure you do as well. By the standards I apply to movies this film does not hold up so well, those standards being writing/plot, directing, characterization, acting, filmmaking, and the way the story is told. The film doesn’t fail in every single one of these categories but it fails in enough of them to bother my cynical ass. That’s why I’ve made this video. Remember it is just my opinion so don’t take anything I say personally obviously. I understand the film is special to a lot of ppl and I’m not denying that it has had a major effect on the genre as a whole. Hope ur all able to enjoy.

I very much agree with this video. I enjoy it for a lot of things! Michael Keaton is my second favorite Batman, the score is iconic, the visuals are beautiful! But yeah a lot of the movie definitely improv, and while I respect Jack Nicholson’s career and his talent, they shouldn’t have cast someone else as the Joker. Robin Williams, Brad Dourif would have made excellent actors for the part, and they wouldn’t have turned it into their own special. I agree that the theme of this movie could have been revenge. What if the movie opens on the Wayne’s getting killed by Joker and Joe Chill under orders from Thorne, then we flash forward to the see Batman trying to track down his parents killer. Once he catches up to Jack he lets him fall into the chemicals as vengeance for his parents death. Now Jack is the Joker because of Bruce’s thirst for revenge, and now Bruce’s arc is finding redemption for creating this monster. And you can limit Vicki Vale’s role and introduce Selina Kyle who’s mob father is also killed by the Joker and you would a good juxtaposition. Sorry that was really long lol! But great work! I’m definitely subscribing haha

Well supposedly in the 3rd movie directed by Burton "Batman Continues" would have a base on Batman's origin besides the Riddler &2face including the beginning of Robin.. It was deleted but Burton's sequels would move on in continuation with its prequels and that J.Napier "Joker🃏" was put to kill the Waynes by another big millionaire family --Burtonverse had all the explanations for everything but not all of'em in the same movie --And about the joker🃏 death, that could change, maybe in a sequel movie that deep under gotham would be found a Lazarus pit or stream &get the Joker🃏 back alive including a new Lovely sequel --if Burton wasn't deleted, there wouldn't be anything questions.. Well, that's what i believe..

This is probably my favorite movie of all time but it definitely isn't perfect and I agree with/can understand a lot of your criticisms. I do think it holds up better just from a pure entertainment standpoint with it's semi-timeless noir feel to basically being a live action cartoon. Honestly with the casting the way it was I think it worked favorably to have the Joker origin story taking up most of the screen-time, especially since Nicholson playing The Joker was the biggest draw going for the film at the time. Also with Burton directing, putting the main focus on the zany villain stuff probably got him in his stride a little better. With Keaton playing Bruce the way he did awkwardly and mysteriously, I just don't see it working where he has some sort of amazing origin story we're supposed to care about. I think you may be judging it a bit by modern epic movie standards (which I think can learn A LOT from this movie's style and creativity). Yeah the story could've had better cohesion for sure (I actually think Forever is the best of the original 4 films in this regard). I have absolutely no issues with the action sequences in this film especially considering the budget. A lot of them were actually groundbreaking for 1989 like the Batmobile chase, the effects for the gadgets, etc. It did come across a bit silly how The Joker falls for Vicki Vale by seeing her picture during his scrapbooking. The pacing of the film takes an unnecessarily deep dive here and loses a lot of seriousness which I blame Burton for. I think you misjudged The Joker's main motivation for getting with Vicki Vale, though. He wanted to disfigure her face with acid like he did with Alicia and probably turn her into another obedient slave to take pictures of his "homicidal art". In the museum scene he tries to disfigure her face with acid and clearly states his plans to have her photograph his work.
