My mum was dying in hospital, the nurses said you can play songs and hold her hand. I played this song on my phone, to her with all the family around, it was a special moment for me.

This song hits me so hard. My father from lismore down the south in co Waterford. He met my mother when she was 16 he was 18. He just passed of pancreatic cancer. We grew up in Ireland and Boston. The Irish touch your heart with music. We would drive around listening to this and he would tell me this is your mother’s song. I miss you daddy. May god bless the Irish.

@@philpants44 Well it is a song about how a man loved a woman and not how a man loved his daughter no? I don't understand all this where people miss-represent totally the meaning of a song. If this guy is singing this to his daughter maybe he needs some help or reporting to the police. I will probably go to the police tomorrow to report this myself and get the guy in question locked up for 5 years and on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life. Nothing less than he deserves and it will be all his daughters doing.. I hope she can recover from he abuse he inflicted on her although she seems to be in denial, her father is a pervert...

I love this song having Irish ancestry, it was one of my dad's favourites along with Danny boy, sadly he passed back in 1979 a year after my ma. Then 3 years ago to the end of this month August, my brother and I were sleeping next to my sister in a hospice as she was dying of cancer. She was in and out of consciousness, the she suddenly asked my brother to play this song, which he did on his mobile, as she loved it also, the next day August 31st she passed. Crying as I write this but have a Guinness in hand. God bless. Then

Im not Irish. I first heard this when I was 6 when we were in UK. 40 years later I googled it . I have been listening to it for 3 days and have been crying like rain 🌧 so much that I am trying to hide my puffy red eyes.In a society where crying is not ok I feel embarrassed and week like my child self. I was strong and courageous till now.I also couldn't feel emotions since my father's death six years ago.Now I feel like a melting iceberg.Amazing song. But if there are dislikes its only because it's beautiful violins and banjo make you cry 😢

I’ve listened to this several times now and I have come to agree with you the slow plucking of the banjo really makes the song. The first time I listened and the second as well I thought to myself, that banjo player isn’t very skillful he can only play one note at a time and so slowly but now I see why, it’s for the effect, the wistfulness and the simplicity. You nailed it.

They have a suspect, a Slovak immigrant, who is in custody but will not stand trial until June 2023 (for some reason). If guilty, and most agree that he is, he deserves the rope but sadly will only get 25 years to life and probably be out in 15 to spend the rest of his life with a target on his back.

Actually, it is not an Irish song, it is a Vaudeville song written by James Thornton in 1895. So probably written to appeal to cosmopolitan US tastes , but obviously has universal appeal. I come from the East Anglia and because I heard it sung in pubs I thought it was a traditional English song for many years.
