Im not Irish. I first heard this when I was 6 when we were in UK. 40 years later I googled it . I have been listening to it for 3 days and have been crying like rain 🌧 so much that I am trying to hide my puffy red eyes.In a society where crying is not ok I feel embarrassed and week like my child self. I was strong and courageous till now.I also couldn't feel emotions since my father's death six years ago.Now I feel like a melting iceberg.Amazing song.But if there are dislikes its only because it's beautiful violins and banjo make you cry 😢

I’ve listened to this several times now and I have come to agree with you the slow plucking of the banjo really makes the song. The first time I listened and the second as well I thought to myself, that banjo player isn’t very skillful he can only play one note at a time and so slowly but now I see why, it’s for the effect, the wistfulness and the simplicity. Actually, it is not an Irish song, it is a Vaudeville song written by James Thornton in 1895. So probably written to appeal to cosmopolitan US tastes , but obviously has universal appeal. I come from the East Anglia and because I heard it sung in pubs I thought it was a traditional English song for many years.
