I really wanted to animate this!
When it comes to support and artistical value, furries are the best out there, really!
My coworker friend came to me saying that the best client she ever had was a furry, respected her so well she was in tears.
So l hope thar this community will stay awesome and keeping inspiring others! Was a guest of honor at Anthrocon 2022 ans it was a blast! So much creativity on this fandom, keep it up!

a friend of mine once, early on in their career of being an internet artist, had a furry pay in full upfront, finished the piece in a couple days, and got paid the full amount again when the client got the piece. they tried their best to refuse, saying how they already got paid and all, but the furry was so insistent on paying again idk why furries get the rep they do, but they know how to treat an artist

I genuinely think that the history that the furry community has had with such extreme bullying and unkindness--and I don't believe it's a coincidence that the bullying has happened to a community is near-entirely made up of queer, mentally ill, and/or disabled people--has led to creating I think possibly the most empathetic and radically compassionate internet communities ever. I would argue most fandoms aren't really communities in a real sense of what that word means, but furries are on a whole other level.

As someone who does lots of commission work (mostly 3d stuff), much of which is for furries, I am constantly and consistently surprised by how much they are willing to pay. I’ve had times where they just throw in DOUBLE the amount of money because they thought my work was deserving of it. Just a few days ago I was discussing a 2 part project with a client and after I named my price for it, they said “okay, and how much for the second half?” I was gonna do the WHOLE THING for that much, but they decided to pay that, plus more than double the original amount for the second half of the project. And honestly, out of all of my clients, the furries have been by FAR the nicest and most understanding. Plus they’re pretty familiar with how commissions generally go down so they’re always easy to work with

My first commission was from a newer artist, and they made a full ref sheet for me for only *$40.* I was ready to shell out double that amount for a ref sheet, and honestly I felt they deserved it after I saw how much time and care went into their work, but I was scared they'd see it as an insult since the #1 rule of commissioning is to not fight an artist on their prices. I honestly regret not offering them higher for their work in hindsight

@@Sephelions I just 'tip' them up to at least top boost them to close to normal value. If most folk are charge $100+ for refs, and a new commissioner who is clearly very talented charges me $40, I'ma AT LEAST give them a 40 tip to boost them to 80. And then still feel bad and lightly suggest they boost their prices. A few times I've actually said to artists like "wow your art is great, normally people charge twice this, you should consider charging more" and they've then upped their charge and still found success. It's a great feeling to encourage an artist and then see them have the confidence to raise prices :D

Shout out to the Reference Artists. They're the real MVPs of the furry art community. It's some of the hardest, most detail-oriented art you can work on because you're literally designing someone's internet identity, and it's the sheet that they'll hand to EVERY OTHER ARTIST they work with in the future. I got so lucky when I commissioned a woman new to the fandom to do my character reference and she under charged me for her work. Tipped her $50 and now I tell everyone that they need to go see her for art if they're interested in dragons.

They live in two worlds if you think about it. The furry world, where they get to express who they are and what they like. @Google Slides The world of anti-social media (it's generally NOT social media) is not the window through which to truly know Furries. The difference is that, in person, you will find you can be more of yourself than you would in other situations. You might still feel shy and socially awkward, but less so. You'll find, over time, that you express more of yourself, though some furmeets can be cliqueish and difficult. Just because we're Furries doesn't mean we've managed to shed all of the terrible habits the world told us to take up. I met two households of Furries (one middle class, one not so middle class), but both of those houses, though crowded, also lived interactive lifestyles with one another that I (not yet a Furry then) found amazing. Now I live in a house with four other Furries; I borrowed the pattern I saw. The person who lives with us who is least Furry once said to me, "I really envy how you live." Part of hte reason Furries get shit is because actually our fursonas (can) change how we exist in the world, as more outgoing, agreeable, emotionally stable, conscientious than we once were (research proves this). It's not perfect, it's not a solution to everything, but it's definitely better and far more ideal than the world as it is.

Please bother us artist- not a lot- but yes it does get akward if we forget cause then we finish in the next day after feeling horrible for doing so. Basicly, don't push artists around, but please, please, when commisioning, if it's been a while, it never hurts to check in or start up a little small talk even just to remind them. Especially if they get a lot of commisions, sometimes it gets lost, and sometimes it can even be a lack of motivation. Lots of reasons, but again, never be afraid to apporach. It's litterally the worst when someone reminds you months later of a commision they forgot and then us artists are just over here like, "oH My gOd, i'M SO sOrrY- CRAP-" We'll freaking sppedrun that commision to make up for a mistake in all honnesty.

As a small time artist who doesn't typically draw furries, this is such an accurate portrayal of my personal experience working on a furry commission. I only have two such experience working on furry comm and in both cases, 1. The client had a drive link full of reference for their OC 2. Offered to pay upfront (which I did decline saying how I'd rather have them pay once they're satisfied with my WIP) 3. Was super patient with me and gave me a lot of time 4. Was super grateful after receiving the artwork and told me to not doubt my skills. 5. Paid me double my asking price saying how it was a tip for doing such a good job. They really made my whole week! And I thought I was just lucky but after seeing this video, seems like this is an actual thing. God bless them!

A furry saved my life once, so I had a fairly positive view on them from the outset. Some friends of mine said some odd things about them as a community later in life when I brought up the subject, so I decided to do my own research. From what I found, the furry community was, and remains, largely a kind, caring, educational, and open community. They are also exceedingly generous to charities and artists. They have a few outliers and bad eggs, but no more so than any other group. In fact, between their charitable donations to hospitals and commissioning starving artists, they can really only be seen as a net positive in my eyes.

@@MikeyFazboi I was fixing houses as part of a middle school charity program one summer in the mountains of West Virginia. One day on my way to the house we were fixing, I got ahead of my group and spotted a man on his porch under a giant confederate flag. It was at least 10 feet tall, covering the entire second floor on the face of the house. I was a young, sheltered black northerner so I didn’t know what that flag meant. My teacher at the time had told me to ask the next person I saw with a confederate flag what it meant to them today when I asked him after we covered the confederacy in History. The flag-covered porch was overflowing with sleepy dogs, which in my naive mind meant he was a good enough person to keep dogs happy, and therefore safe. The people in town had also been very kind to me so far. I decided to ask him what his flag meant to him. He asked me to come over and talk to him about it, so I did. Then he leveled a shotgun at me that he’s been hiding behind the porch’s supporting column. He started ranting loudly about something. I could tell he was passionate, and offended, but I couldn’t hear him, all of my focus was down the barrel of that gun. He got louder, angrier, and stood up from his rocking chair, and took more careful aim at me. Maybe I didn’t answer a question he asked me? Still not sure. That’s when my white, furry friend saved me. She ran up and stood between me and the gunman, apologized for both of us, and backed me off of the guy’s property. She stayed between me and him until we rounded the corner at the end of the street. If she hadn’t been there right then, and been brave enough to risk her own life for my stupid mistake, I would be dead. Based on what I’m told he was yelling before my friend arrived, she 100% saved my life.

Everyone wonders why furries are suspiciously wealthy, but I think I know why and the answer is right here really. When you find someone who is new to furries and you treat them like this, they are likely to keep coming to furries for support, and when they find continuous support in the community they are more likely to give what they get as learning the culture of the fandom. Really being a furry isnt just being part of a community but being part of a semi-independent economic system of people who actually value each others work fairly and often, which drives furries to keep doing what they love while keeping people away who think its weird and wouldnt benefit from or benefit the drive of it all. Perhaps we can go deeper and say this was the plan of Disney and other companies to fund people with this mindset to make more money themself, but that could be a bit of a conspiracy and this is just a KZfaq comment, but I just freaking love furries and they always find a way to amaze me by basically running the internet!

Furries are low-key some of the most accepting people ever. Gender? Age? Race? Orientation? They could *not* care less. Most of them are so sweet, too! I try my hardest to be an excellent client, especially when I'm working with an artist in a difficult financial situation. Never take advantage of low starting prices; if you feel on instinct what you're paying doesn't appropriately value the quality of the work you've received, offer more. You will most certainly feel very personally fulfilled even if your wallet is a bit lighter. Do not do too frequent check-ins! It obviously depends on estimates, but it's usually acceptable to check in about weekly, but make sure you checked with the artist beforehand whether they're starting immediately or if they're working on backlogged commissions and if yours will be started a bit later! Also, if you're going to check in, make sure the artist is healthy physically and mentally. You always need to be willing to give grace when it comes to the artist's well-being, both because it would be unethical to do otherwise, and because it can impact the quality of the final result! If the work isn't what you hoped, do not be *harsh* with your criticism, be *precise*. It can hurt to pay well for something you don't like very much, and you may think it'll hurt to have their work criticized, but this probably isn't their first rodeo. Just make sure you're using constructive terminology and avoiding negative connotations! It's okay to ask for corrections, but there is a balance! Consider how long things can take to re-draw. Try drafting the concept got the piece beforehand, or using references; either way, make sure you are firm about the concept, because asking for something at dramatic as a change in pose or setting after the scene is already being illustrated would be a bit rediculous! Even if it looks silly because you can't draw, it's okay! The artist will most likely always appreciate some direction with a rough draft, especially because it can be assurance that they won't have to make too many changes down the line! (this is all I can really think of right now, but feel free to reply some other good suggestions! remember to be good clients owo)

i think a good reason as to why furries really take good care of commisions is because being an artist is genuine hard work, and getting drawings of your characters is even harder. i myself have been living off of free samples and sketches for a good couple years, but i'll definitely get into the commission game one day.

Unlike most other fandoms, which have some core media property that the fandom congealed around, the furry fandom almost entirely sprung up around fan works. So the kinds of fans who would drop hundreds, thousands of dollars on sealed limited-edition boxed sets of their favorite shows don't have the official merchandise to spend it on in the furry fandom. So instead, they spend it on commissions. Lots of lucrative commissions. And just like anything, when you do it a lot, you get good at it. You get your references together. You work with the artists. You build a rapport with favorite artists and other favorite commissioners and you build a network that comes together to just randomly sweep in and make some artist's entire month.
