Tudor has been a dominant force since the release of the heritage black bay more than ten years back. How did they get to where they are today? What can be improved? And what can we expect from them in the future?
That's what I'm diving into in this video.
Enjoy - and as always: Share your thoughts in the comments and subscribe if you want to stay up to date with my releases.
Cheers!

If you are not an executive in product management at a large company, especially in the watch world, you need to be. Your understanding and explanation of product portfolio, positioning, logical engineering developments, and what the customer wants, is impressive. Great explanations and insights, I just subscribed. Btw I just bought my first Tudor, an opaline dial gmt on the bracelet, and love it!

It seems the market craves a Tudor Sub. Just look at the hipe around what turned out to be just an FXD in black… If they did a 79090-style Black Bay they would sell buckets - perhaps not so many 58s and 54s or even Rolex subs though and that might be the reason why they haven’t made one yet…

I’ve come close to buying a couple Pelagos models but never pulled the trigger. Tudor is an “in theory” watch company for me-I should love them but somehow I’m always underwhelmed when I try them on. Whenever a new Tudor model comes out I’m excited but cannot get it in a particular configuration for months and then when it’s available I’ve lost interest. Have a great weekend everyone 😎!

Good video, thx for that. I think another important reason to why Tudor is so popular is their customer focus. They intently listen to what the customer wants and then try to accommodate. FXD, thinner cases, smaller models….in that respect I don’t think they run the risk of getting boring….

Tudor achieved the peak version for BB58/54 and Pelagos 39, it is at its peak form. (thin case, 39mm, in house mov't) But other models still can use the same improvements: GMT / Pro / Chrono. We need an upgraded calibre that is 2mm thinner. Imagine: Black Bay GMT (Coke and Batman Aluminum Bezel) at 13mm. Black Bay Pro (Polar) at 13mm. Black Bay Chrono within in house movement at 13mm. All with econd hand a lollipop like recent models. This line up will be another gold pot.

I think you are right. The Spirit is better than the Ranger. Even the steel one is. The Pioneer Ti5 dateless whipes the floor. I also think the Spirit Zulu is better than the Tudor counterpart. The Spirit Flyback is also better than the BB Chrono, if you have the wrists. Unfortunately it's big, especially in thickness. The Ti version helps. But I hope there's a 39-40/15mm coming next year. And I hope it can keep the exhibition case back. And in general for the Spirit, I hope they change the male link, as they've listened to us and made the lugs shorter.

Love your channel! Best watch related content on KZfaq. I'd love your take on Omega's direction this year and going forward. The general consensus based on the recent PO GMT release is that Omega have lost the plot; the common denominators are thicker, bigger and substantially more expensive watches. The 75th seamaster anniversary collection was fun, but apart from the change in color - zero improvements. Their catalogue offering is mess, with countless variations. Is this strategy going to pay off going forward?

Good video. Agree with your analysis. I was thinking along similar lines but you have articulated it better. Tudor is falling in the lines of a Rolex-esq. lineup. They will trim down the fat, have a more streamlined lineup, and releases will be more tweaked. I have a DateJust 36mm, I love it; I have a BB54, I love it. It’s so interesting how so many large watch companies have poor websites 😵‍💫😵.. I think this matters a lot for potential / new customers… on a different note, curious if you think that Rolex has anything to learn from the “new Tudor” company (it’s most recent changes I mean) or are these differences between the companies necessary and should stay this way?? I’m not new to collecting watches to WEAR. Rolex, Tag, Seiko are the brands I have. I had always considered Tudor to be the poor cousin to Rolex until I saw the BB58 and then started looking into Tudor in more depth. Then in 2023 they brought out the BB54 so I went to an AD and tried one along side the BB58. I have small wrists and the BB54 looked more proportional on my wrist but I also liked the fact that is was based on their first dive watch from 1954. I bought that watch which still needed link to be removed for my wrist. The one compliant that Tudor need to address across the line is providing 1/2 links. This is not a big technical challenge but one that should be the norm. Other than that for the money the watch is extremely well made and finished and I can see why they are a serious threat to Omega. I can see Tudor bringing out one more range that bridges the gap between the cheapest Rolex watches and Tudor current most expensive watches and I think it will not be a tool watch but something more akin to the Oyster Perpetual with more Avantgarde watch faces to liven things up as the dive / sports watch series as you say are fairly complete and overlap.

Love Tudor, love boring. I want a piece that is timeless no matter the era. I agree with your thoughts on a Tudor dress piece. The Royal, Glamour, and 1926 lines are kind of throw away lines. I wish they would revamp these lines with a focused, modern dress line. It’s hard to find a dress watch under 39mm these days and Tudor has proven they’re not afraid to go back to classic proportions (BB54). A dress prince in 34mm would be an instant but for me.

we were in a vintage lovers market when Tudor started their releases. However, I think anther contributing factor was the Rolex effect, it was the take off of the waiting list period and so many channels were popping up and promoting Tudor as a Rolex alternative. Rolex alternative they are but in my eyes they are the more classic side of Rolex as Rolex does not do reissues. I guess Tudor provided a substitute for hype watches people could not afford as well as for those who could even afford one but could not get into the high flyers club. And yes, broadly appealing because we all know what Rolex looks like and Tudor have used that as their foundation, an understatement actually

They were established under the premise of an affordable Rolex as Wildorf Invisioned. Unfortunately this tattoo will never be fully removed. There will always remain a scar. That's why Tudor are now trying to find their own identity with their storied past with the military-esque issues and the North Greenland Expedition. At least they have a genuine rich history they can build on so they can continue to make watches to reflect historical models and appeal to the tough guy consumer whilst at the same time cross over to hybrid designs to show they also have big brother Rolex's genes. This puts them in a unique position that allows broader appeal to a wider market, unlike Rolex which will not make vintage homages and is targeted towards a more luxury focused demographic. Tudor's lower price point is the big ticket. For many impulsive consumers, they can't save or be disciplined to save for a Rolex so they justify buying multiple Tudors whenever they are released. They get an instant sugar hit. Where Tudor can beat Omega on pricing is by saving on their marketing budget. Omega have out blown Tudors comparable budget by 10 years with the Bond franchise alone. Ironically Rolex have not spent a cent on Bond marketing but the Submariner will always be entrenched in history as the number 1 Bond watch. In conclusion I think Tudor has a wide scope of designs available to them and they can go in any direction. Their Pelagos line is now expanding also. If they get really desperate they can do what Omega does and release infinite colour and size variations of their entire catalogue. Worse case scenario they could make a bio ceramic Tudor Sub or Snowflake. Consumers will go ape bananas to collect them all. Especially the blue Snowflake whether the ink stains your wrist will even be more sought after!

Great analysis as usual, though in a good way I hope you're wrong as iv'e loved Tudor's releases over the last few years. We keep on thinking that's it, then they hit another home run! I think Rolex want to elevate themselves to the next tier, they have no interest in making 2 million watches a year to keep up with demand, which I think is manufactured by Rolex. Rolex will then bring up Tudor to the space left by Rolex (10 year plan) I think Tudor will be the one's to try more daring materials and collabs from time to time, but will have less new release as you said in between. But then again, who knows!

I share the outlook on their boring future. I find it hard to digest that their two most popular watches: Pelagos and Black Bays, already have a massive overlap in their design. Bring in the positioning of the brand and I keep away from it. They have Rolex as a ceiling and have to maintain a wide gap in quality. They cannot push. For instance, Tudor will not offer a ceramic bezel as Rolex has it. Tudor will never come up with an amazing and refined dress sports because that is where Rolex is. This restrained nature of it is what repels me the most. The second part is the pricing, Longines offers chronometers for 50-70 % of Tudor's price and they are comparable if not better in the overall offering. And on the upper side, Tudor is too close to Omega in its pricing and for me, I would happily wait a little to cover the 25% price gap between Black Bay and Seamaster 300 and buy something that I view as miles and leaps better than Black Bay and even arguably better than a Submariner. These two aspects repel me from Tudor. It is the cheap Rolex, whatever it tries and I don't want to spend my money on a compromise. Kinda harsh but unapologetic about this.

I wouldn’t describe any of the Tudor range boring, people like different things, and a watch for different purposes, they have captured that “vintage” appeal by being original There’s something for everyone’s taste, if you want a Tudor, people don’t buy watches from a pigeon holed design, they buy them because they appeal to them, regardless if it’s a sports a chronograph, dress watch or whatever I have a S&G BB GMT “Rootbeer” purchased brand new, it’s a phenomenal looking and superbly made watch, especially at its price point, you literally couldn’t get anything else from any other manufacturer that comes close for the money Does someone else think it’s boring? When I saw Tudor and heard the love for them other than being good quality watches at a reasonable price point none stood out to me. I hear someone liking the BB but even though not a fan of dive watches I just thought they looked muted compared to the other options available. Curious to see what happens to them in future

Sadly most of the comments are a bit negative and seem to be from old people who aren't watch lovers, but from old people who want to have a complain about something. I think that Tudor is a very modern, forward looking watch company. If you can't see that, then perhaps you are an anachronism? This video is a little pompous TBH, and also shows signs of being "yesterday's view"?

Tudor totally don’t “tick all the right boxes”. They are let down massively on wearability due to thickness and lack of half links. Many of their pieces are ridiculously thick, and look even thicker due to the slab sides of the black bay. People breathed a sigh of relief with the BB58 but it still lacks T-Fit. All their watches on an oyster style bracelet NEED HALF-LINKS. T-fit alone doesn’t work as it does t have enough adjustment points. That’s why Uncle Straps sell a tonne of half-links but Tudor should supply these. It’s funny how San Martin does Tudor so much better than Tudor themselves.

I think the dimensions are perfect. It looks and feels great on wrist. I rarely wear dress shirts and none of them are so tight that I cant wear a Tudor if I wanted to. I do agree that they should include half links though. EVERY brand should include half links. I also don't need the on the fly adjustment as I haven't had a need to ever use it with any of my watches. It's set it and forget it for me. Great thing about the current state of this hobby is there is plenty of options out there for everyone!

Tudor are just Rolex’s retro fashion brand. The quality just isn’t there and quality issues are mounting up. I’ve owned a few and the older ones were definitely better made than the new ones. The marketing is also pure cringe. The Born to dare thing and the David Beckham thing is as much of a put off as it is a benefit for Tudor. How many black bays dose it take that look like an old Rolex until it all gets boring ? The in house movement thing is also riding the edge of in house. They are not made by Tudor at all🤔 Tudor also only make a few watches people actually want and many need scraping because of awful case thickness problems.

@@WestCoastAce27 You are either delusional or living in the past. Pelagos 39, BB pro are all available at huge discounts on eBay, chrono. 1 year wait lol!! The sales maybe good so far as these low quality watches are pushed to those wanting a Rolex but that will change soon as more Rolexes fall below MSRP like datejusts, explorers. Trust me they are garbage. I bought a tudor GMT in 2021 which stopped working after 2 weeks and had to go back to service centre for 3 months(no refund as 14 days had passed). The Black Dial FXD - she said I'd have to wait a week or two because they didn't want to sell their only display model.
