With all pop culture, it has a humble beginning. Back in the far off year of 2012, an artist by the name of Tony Holmsten created an art series called killer is dead.
In it, he featured what can only be descriptive is a Miyazaki era laputa creation that seems to defire gravity.
While impressive, its our next artist, Alexander Tujicov
Who turned it into a 3d model. Its been so popular that hes increased the price up to 500 usd - which credit where credit is due, the 3d is so good that it fooled the world.
Then enters our hero of the story - Hashem Al-Ghaili. As part of some worldbuilding on reddit, he used the model to describe a fantastical flying hotel.
One that could carry 5000 passengers all over the world with luxury that isn’t even found on cruise ships. Everything from restaurants, shopping malls hospitals to even a 360 sky deck.
Such a large aircraft of course, would require a powersource that is equally bonkers. Fusion nuclear power. With near unlimited nuclear fuel, it could fly forever and never have to land.
Which btw, is the same concept behind the equally insane lockheed flying aircraft carrier which i covered on the channel - which you can watch here.
To ensure a safe passage, the plane would use state of the art artificial intelligence to pilot the craft and navigate turbulence - using what the author describes as noise cancelling technology.
Passengers would fly on convered 747s from the ground up to the sky cruiser to dock, and from there, experience the very best that the earth, and sky, has to offer.
The media once catching wind of this, went to town and declared that engineers in germany were working on this concept and that it could by flying within the next 10 years. Outrageously claiming as much as the dubai airline emirates already making orders - something that really puts to show how little research some news organizations do.
Its not the first time that the media has fallen to the hype of a flying sky hotel. Back in 2009, the media was tricked that the Mi-12, the worlds largest production helicopter, had been bought to be turned into a helicopter hotel - or dubbed the “Hotelicopter”. Which I think is a fancinating concept.
So what would it be like if this plane actually existed?
Well for one there are all sorts of engineering questions, let alone the laws of thermodynamics, that we need to take into consideration.
The first is the power source. Fusion energy doesn’t exist, and using nuclear power, even fission, onboard a plane, is a immature technology. I’ve covered in detail the experiments to build a nuclear powered bomber, and while in theory its something possibile, it might not be exactly something you want to do.
With 5000 passengers onboard you would need to absolutely make sure the radiation shelding is up to spec, and that there is a safe way to evacuate all the passengers within 60 seconds on the ground - something that clears aircraft to fly by the FAA.
Other questions raised are about where on earth this would take off to begin with, perhaps out in the middle of a desert somewhere, and how on earth it would be resupplied with food and water. Even the best aspirations require more than just
Lastly, we didn’t even mention the cost to build such an aircraft, nor the new engineering technologies we would need to develop to build it.
But theres one gaping question I have. Would it even be any good to be onboard? If you are like me and have flown long haul across this planet, there isn’t exactly a ton to see once your up in the sky and flying. I’m not saying the view isn’t utterly spectature, but after a while your just looking at clouds. Any landmark or site would be quickly flown by and you would blink and miss it - an advantage that our humble cruise ship has over this aircraft.
And as one redditor put it, "I'd like a zeppelin, but more expensive, more difficult to operate, and more dangerous, please."
But what if we wanted to make a sky hotel? What would that actually look like?

I just watched your Lockheed A380 video (very well-done). You point out that there is a practical size limit and passenger limit for air travel. Videos from Mustard point out the same thing. We may be able to physically build something that monstrous and beautiful, but where would it land? And getting 900 passengers/crew on and off the vehicle would take hours. There is a definite limit to how large air vehicles can be.

That new airship at the end of the video could have lightweight solar panels on the top of it's huge "fuselage"(?), some lightweight LiPo batteries to store energy, and use electric motors. They could also perhaps incorporate retractable panels, which open up to act as a type of sail, allowing the ship to save energy. This airship has potential. On another note, the idea of a winged flying hotel seems totally impractical, if not preposterous!😄

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

Just to clarify here, 6:19 - Fission is well understood and implemented since the 1970s. Fusion on the otherhand is still experimental and we so far have not achieved more energy returned than put in. (I.e. efficiency is less than 100% - current best is around 65% or so from memory.) On top of this, fusion has only been sustained for a few seconds at most, with recent advances getting up to around 20 seconds and record plasma sustained for 101 seconds at certain reactors in China and South Korea (EAST and KSTAR respectively).

I can think of two examples of this concept in games, and neither is particularly optimistic. The Aigaion from Ace Combat 6 is a nuclear-powered flying aircraft carrier that serves as the game's requisite superweapon. It's a massive flying boat that looks like a cross between a whale and a manta ray, with a pair of partially-open flight decks along it's centerline and storage inside of it's massive forward wings. The other example is the Cradles from Armored Core: for Answer, which are even larger and are designed to serve as flying safe havens above the irradiated and desolate earth for the elites of humanity. These things look like demented tri-planes without a fusilage or tail, powered by nuclear reactors to stay airborne indefinitely, and I would estimate that you could cram a small city's worth of people and amenities into each one.

Airships “can” be done again. Media has fear mongered many over the Hindenburg incident. But that tech was limited by manual controls of Hydrogen gas valving and poor materials. A.I. could do far better and with our current weather alert systems almost guarantee a smooth voyage. Fun fact: Hydrogen gas has practically twice the lift capacity of Helium and is a renewable resource. Only downside to such Humongous aircraft is the facility required to build/house them. The Hindenburg if on-end was as tall as the Empire State Building. And the hangar was bigger than that and of course we’d want to double that size if built again. What airport could possibly house this type of vehicle.

I saw this on some bloggers site and knew it was bunk just looking at it. 30 yrs in aviation I’ve seen a lot and thought a lot on wild concepts. I think the team at ocean sky have a real winning concept and would love to see this come to fruition.

6:07 BTW for clarification fusion energy does exist. For instance the sun is basically a giant fusion reactor. Of course nobody has actually successfully been able to sustain a constant fusion reaction. Still funny that they thought it would go in a plane.

What they lacked in a wager of a blimp and airliner, was the combo to make it a sky cruise ship(more like mobile motel) or"hotel." AND a blimb anatomy support, NOT to fully levitate a craft, but to make it almost super vertically light weight, the advantage against a full power loss crash land or just VtoL effection, while being aerodynamic with wings limbs. An aviator and spacious enough as massive flight infastructer.

A note on your hotel airship, I fly all the time around 10000 ft after a few hours I get a headache from lack of oxygen. A pressurized cabin would be needed especially if you are flying around for days. It simply would not be good for your health for long durations, for short time you fine.

There's no possible way that this would ever be able to come to pass. Just too, too many "things" /systems, etc. to go wrong for it to "ever" be able to fly, even ONCE, let alone as often as a real aircraft. Pure fantasy! But hey, Dreams are FREE!!!!

Because I would really like to see it’s possible performance, and how much bigger it would have been than today’s jumbos. Just a fun little idea I threw out. 😀 😉
