Played quite a bit in college 20 years ago, came back to disc golf during Covid. As a person who loves playing in weekly $10 leagues, PDGA membership doesn't offer anything valuable to me. My skill level is MA3/MA2 at best, and paying $60+ to play a tournament with no payout is a losing proposition. Disc golf is strong, the PDGA side is correcting to pre-Covid levels.

My guess is a lot of Covid joiners realized they don’t care for tournament play and didn’t renew their membership. Casual players far outnumber tournament players. I think the people that feel like the sport is dying only have experience during the Covid boom. From someone like me who has been around since long before 2020, I think the sport is more alive than ever

I grew up in Los Angeles 20 minutes from La Mirada and Huntington Beach. Did not even hear about disc golf until I was 42 yrs old. If they wanted it to grow between 1979 and 2021 they failed miserably. I feel like the OG's wanted to have their own sub culture and thats what it was for 40 years. I get pissed off when I see cornhole, tag and other lame shit on ESPN. DIsc Golf is a great sport and deserves to be recognized and pushed to a larger crowd. I think its growing just a lot slower than pandemic days.

I played disc golf before the pandemic, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that I started to take it seriously. I got Covid and decided to head down to my local course and teach myself how to throw backhand and hone my forehand. My love for the sport just grew from there. I played my first PDGA event last year, and since then my rating has gone up 86 points. My rating is now high enough to play on Tour qualifying events, and I’m looking to take my game as high as it will go!!

Played 3 years had some kids. Stopped for a little over 5 years. Back for 5 months and teachibv the kids. It's definitely seen a huge influx of players. I could go to courses prior to quitting and be the only person there. Now, even when it was over 100 degrees, courses are packed. I enjoy it. I love how positive most people are.

Playing semi-seriously since '04. Stopped playing when the kids were born, but I've gotten back into it big time recently. Living in SW Ohio between two mini-mechas of discgolf, Cincinnati and Dayton, there are no shortages of great courses to play. I have noticed a few more people out there than it used to be, but there's also additional courses popping up every year it feels like, so if you stay away from the par 3 dinker course then there really aren't crowds. Loving where discgolf is at right now.

@@madammo7786 it's not a matter of me not liking anything. it's a very real possibility that the DGPT could be sued by Ryan and other "transgender" activists into insolvency. it would be a smart business decision to abandon those states in which this is a possibility. also, a state doesn't qualify as a tradition. the OTB open is pretty far from a tradition, it's only been going on for a few years.

The future needs to be coverage on every hole like traditional golf and please stop saying ball golf. Traditional golf is the oldest sport and fundraisers more $ than basket foot and baseball combined

I've been playing since 1996. Not a fan of the corporate take over of disc golf. It won't end well. Pre covid disc golf was more relaxed and people actually knew what disc golf etiquette is. Can't tell you how many times I've almost been hit by a newb throwing on me when they shouldn't. My half a cent opinion

Disc golf rise was at least partially fueled by the close battles between the superstars. Paul and Ricky, Paige and Catrina. Now we have a different winner every week. I used to watch coverage of the whole tournament. Now I barely watch the highlights. I'm not saying any of this is bad, it's just not as interesting. From a fans viewpoint, disc golf needs its superstars competing every week.

I started playing in 1996. I’ve seen this game through a lot of different eras and this may be an unpopular opinion, but from an amateur perspective, the growth that has happened the past few years has been negative for the enjoyment of the game. Disc prices have gone up (especially old discs that are now considered “collector”) more and more courses have started to be pay to play (with no real step up in quality from free courses) and it’s normal to now have to wait for the card in front of you or ask to play through whereas that used to be a rarity. I still enjoy it and still love it but the infiltration of “business first” personalities into the sport in recent years is very apparent.

First world problems... You can still buy DX discs and play free object courses. But what about those of us who want nice plastic, good baskets and a sport to follow? Been playing since around 2003 and I would buy a season pass to a disc golf course in a heartbeat. This attitude that disc golf has to be free is nonsense.
@DarttheLegend
@DarttheLegend 8 ай бұрын
@@ilikesnow “first world problems” is the absolute worst argument. people are allowed to not like things they don’t like even when they aren’t life threatening. DX plastic used to be 5 dollars and champion plastic used to be 12 dollars a disc. Companies that aren’t Innova started sharply increasing their prices in the last 3 years specifically, simply because they could. Discraft tried it first to see if they would still sell and unfortunately they did and other companies followed suit. New disc prices (even Innova) are at an absurdly higher rate than inflation would put them at from back then (literally only 10 years ago is when I’m referring to, no new plastic types since then). DGN is also the worst thing in disc golf, and has actively obstructed people from watching coverage of large-scale tournaments that they would’ve previously been freely able to watch in 2019. The spirit of disc golf has always been that it is the antithesis of golf, that it is not for rich people, that it’s for everyone. It is getting less and less accessible and we are moving towards golf in a very negative way. Just because YOU can pay and don’t mind paying doesn’t mean everyone can.
@ilikesnow
@ilikesnow 8 ай бұрын
@@DarttheLegend You sir, are correct. People can like and dislike whatever they want. But you are saying that nobody should even have the choice of buying nice discs or paying nice courses. This Skywalker I just got was like $24. That is not a lot of money. The game is the same as golf, not the "antithesis" of golf. Some of the poorest people I know are the best ball golfers. They make it happen because they love the game. The fact that you don't want to spend any money at all, is the problem. "Gimme, gimmie, gimmie, free, free, free. "
@DarttheLegend

@@ilikesnow your perspective on life and other people is awful. Your assumption that anyone who thinks things should be less expensive “wants a handout” tells me so much about your personality (and political affiliation) and you are exactly the type of person that is making disc golf worse. Things were more enjoyable before, and things should be people-first not business-first.
