I was thinking something similar. This sounds like early DnB. Which fits in the right timeframe. Like 92 ~ 97. Overall though, this particular cook-up sounds like Prodigy.
@OfficialHavocOsiris
@OfficialHavocOsiris 8 ай бұрын
The only real way to get it to stand out is in how you approach it. Because at the surface level, yeah, you just have The Prodigy with a few extra layers. This is where it helps to get a little creative IMO. Hell, go cinematic with it if it means clarifying that you didn’t just recreate Voodoo People or Hotride and call it something else

Although New Jack Swing first merged in the late '80s, it's really more associated with the early '90s. Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison" came out in 1990. The movie "New Jack City" came out in 1991, as did Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album (which had several New Jack Swing tracks produced by Teddy Riley), and The Arsenio Hall Show, which featured many New Jack Swing artists as musical guests, propelled the genre into the mainstream in the early '90s. As for Hip-Hop, I'm down for anything new. The whole trap-derived sound has been soooooooo played out, it's a joke. It's time to bury it in the ground.

I feel like the next wave is going to be between the Earl Sweatshirt/Alchemist, MIKE, or even Griselda sound and plugggnb ect, because those are the most prominent underground sounds that aren’t technically mainstream, and don’t get me wrong I can definitely see that ken karson, or kinda rock rap sound being mainstream but it’d be really niche, or have a low chance of doing so. Pluggnb and that abstract soul/boombap-ish sound is the most reaching niche of the underground and thats why to me I think it’s between those

This video was definitely interesting for me since even before realizing this boom of Rap Rock was happening I was mostly making beats (although stylistically it's something more leaning towards what Billy Woods, Lil Ugly Mane and ELUCID would rap on than Slowthai) that sampled a lot of Rock/Metal artists. I might even site some of these artists as my main inspirations over most Hip Hop artists tbh. Bands like Manic Street Preachers(their earlier works), Swans, Soundgarden, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Electric Wizard, Shining, Unwound and Black Flag all influenced me heavily when it comes to both sound and lyricism so it's really cool to see this phenomenon being more common

I don’t see it going from 808’s to this style of Hip Hop. More so it’s probably going to go back to more of a sample based form of Hip Hop. This kind of Hip Hop will not get in play in the clubs or cars nowadays. Maybe it’ll work on a smaller scale as far as some niche off brand underground stuff but not on a large scale. Sample based Hip Hop is about to take over again.

@@Bagheera_Smoov yeah, I mean I can see how you could argue that some grunge elements are going to become more mainstream soon, but the underground is deeper than that by definition and he seems to be arguing that grunge is the norm there? Which isn’t true, despite what youtubers may tell you underground hip hop is deeper than Griselda (which is hardly underground these days) who aren’t that grungy anyways, if anything in recent years I think there’s been a much bigger return to acoustic and live sounding music underground than anything more electronic. And pop music certainly isn’t gonna become any more dirty anytime soon. Listen to that new Drake album, or really any other pop album. I don’t see much distortion there.

I agree with you but the cycle is becoming randomized everyone is doing whatever they want whenever they want like early 2000s pop punk sound is being implemented more and more these days and then the next week we just flash right back to the 70s then the next week we jump to the 90s it is a cycle for sure but the cycle is being randomized

I've been a believer in the cycles concept in popular music for a long time.. I was born in 1987, so the recent 80s-pop resurgence has been super nostalgic for me, even though it's a period I was far too young to associate actual memories with.. Instead I think my brain creates emotional connections automatically when I hear it, which is really interesting. But I've been considering the 90s thing for a minute, I had a feeling it was coming soon but I had no clue what it would actually sound like. If this is any indication, it's going to be a lot better than I expected. Brilliant video man, I've seen a couple of your videos in the past but I'm definitely subscribing right now.

This definitely sounds similar early DnB and fits in the timeframe Navie D is talking about, like 1992 ~ 97. With that said, DnB has mastered this sound. I would hope if Hip-Hop was going to move in this direction, they would skip the stumbling through the "figure it out" phase, and just make DnB instrumentals with a focus on the rapping.

It's an undeniable fact that individualism will always be the trendsetter. Game changers like Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Otis Redding dared to pave their own way and revolutionize the music industry. If you want to leave a mark and make a difference, you need to learn the game, but then you must go above and beyond by flipping the script and creating something truly unique and remarkable. That's the only way to become a true trendsetter and make your mark in this world. (Generated by AI using Grammarly 😂 i's so smart 🤣) PS. Like always, another great post...

Run DMC was doing Rap Rock mix in the early 80's. They were the ones who made that popular. Look up their songs Rock Box, Walk This Way and Raising Hell.

great video! one thing that I think about a lot as an aspiring producer is the history of recorded music, but primarily how that impacts modern day music. In the last 10 years or so, we've had a lot more accessibility to countless eras and times of music unlike any year beforehand. Likewise, its easier to discover new music from any style or any time in history. Compare music platforms to the early 2000s for example, we don't need to go out, find a CD someone might have reviewed, and check it out, you can just swipe a screen and find polyrhythmic gregorian chant music if you wanted. That being said, this era in the music industry is really unique in history because of how many producers throughout many years can implement their influences of any year or style of music into modern music. To build off your mentioning of the cyclical nature of music, I think the era of music we exist in is the equivalent of duct taping that cycle onto the wheel of a Porche 911 on the autoban. Artists are trying to get the motown tonality feeling while incorporating phil collins styled snares with gated reverbs, and this could al be on some ska track. Ultimately this is all fun and good to think about but so what? I think if you're an aspiing producer, you should go out of your normal listening routine and find something you might not have heard before and break it down and allow it to drive you to create something new. How does Joy Division craft an ambiance and where do the instruments sit in the mix? how does that compare to a Funkadelic mix? Whats the tonality difference between 70s funk drums and 80s pop drums? how would you create that? I think by doing exercises like this will fundamentally make you a stronger producer but also help you find a blend of different genres through time that might not have been done before.

you can also see the influence if 90s rnb in the new underground rap genres of Pluggnb and Sexxnb which have taken over the underground the past few years and are becoming really popular

Style everywhere. I personally believe it will do something we don't expect. I feel like its going back to the 60's and expanding through todays time. Were accepting everything experimental. The most popular have become mondaine. Yet they'll stick around. Its the blueprint now. Idk if he knows that modern hip hop owns drums or if he isn't really experienced in hip hop. However I can see if this is the cliche sound. Idk if he's a product of Hip Hop or just a college learned concept man. He's not figuring in the real life experience that creates Hip Hop. He's predicting future Hip Pop. Not mad at it either. .. just not true soul.

Sorry Navie, but this is a bad take. This sounds has been around for a while with even heavier punk/metal/grunge influences on top of DNB. Yea sure we’re hearing lots of it right now but that’s because anyone can make music and upload it nowadays so we’re getting more of everything. More lofi, boom bap, experimental, punk, distorted, etc. it’s just a matter of who you listen to at the moment. This type of rap will never be “mainstream” because it’s already never been that popular. The closest you’ll get is like Yeat, Lil Uzi Vert, Teezo, JPEG. I also think Paris Texas is more punk with rap influences and not the other way around. At a certain point you can’t call it rap anymore. Cheers!

Rap/Rock already happened between 2005-2010 in some capacity. Trick Daddy - Lets go, Badboy Family - Bad boys for Life, Jay-Z Grey album, MIA - Paper Planes. I hope we go from the era of Autotune. lol

In response to showing BBD when mentioning New Jack Swing... As a person who was there, Teddy Riley was the creator of New Jack Swing, but not the creator of Hip Hop merged with R&B. Teddy's music was New Jack Swing. Not everything from the era that blended Hip Hop and R&B was considered New Jack Swing. BBD's music was not. In fact, they tell you exactly what their music was. "Hip Hop smoothed out on an R&B tip with pop feel, appeal to it." I know people love to look back and lump it all together, but it was all distinct to us who were of the culture back then. It's like someone 20 years from now saying that The Migos, Future, and Lil Baby were of the same sub-genre of Hip Hop. While you could create a sub-genre that encompasses BBD and Guy, it wouldn't be called New Jack Swing, because that's Teddy's side of things.

I like your beat but, IDK if that's the new wave. My nephews listen to rap music right now that has a little rock influence to it. I forgot what they call it but it started since the pandemic. Some of it has 808's in it and analogue synths from the 80's. I haven't heard any popular rappers on those type of beats yet.
