most likely the MiG-29 in the beginning wasn't actually hit by the phoenix but rather was flying low and got splashed by the missile hitting the ground

i like top tier, but its very quickly gonna become a game of "who gets the fastest missile off first" type game. i remember when 9Bs got added (before people knew a slight turn would make it miss lol)

When aim-120s eventually come into the game I'd love to see the option smaller match sizes eg. 5v5 to try encourage a little more thought into the BVR combat that realistically should be happening rather than the clusterfuck that is current top tier.

Personally running 4 Phoenixes, 2 sparrows, and 2 sidewinders seems to do the trick for me. Got killing potential at all ranges and a comfortable 4 kills per game

You need to lob the AIM-54, not just shoot it. Go to 7km+ altitude and before you fire you put the target as close to the bottom of the big circle as you can. This will make the missile follow a ballistic trajectory that both increases the range and the speed it retains when close to the target but also makes it come at an angle that is often in the RWR blind spot so the target will, hopefully, not get a warning about the missile going pitbull. Also, you should cut power to the engine after shooting them all off to decrease closure with the enemy and give your radar more time to guide the missiles, the longer you maintain guidance, the later the missile will go pitbull and the higher the chance that it will do so in the RWR blind zone.

The nerf to radar locking 50 meters lower than a person because they are low alt is the issue with phoenixes, same with missile spam. To dodge a missile with 95% certainty just fly low, profit. Its so dumb, they keep lowering the mental capacity required for all the top tiers

Gaijin just needs to give Air RB multiple spawns, like the other RB modes 2 spawns, and a 3rd only if you get enough SP Would allow grinding to be ALOT easier, would give dogfights length, and a lot more of a challenge, as, once you are done with the 2nd fight of your game, you will more then likely run into a fresh plane ready for a fight And it would allow for a more diverse experience As you can go bomber, then spawn a fighter to kill whomever killed you, and then bomb again Or whatever you wanna do Also, fuel should be on a slider, and bombers should be given a minimum of 30 min of fuel, so they can actually maneuver a bit

Fuel is the most important aspect to me. For the most part, if the plane is over-loaded with fuel or a massive loadout, then it limits your maneuverability in this hyper-aggressive play-style, so we take less fuel at the start and plan to either end the game as quickly as possible or die trying. Most planes you can get away with 20m fuel. The F-14A is rare in that it needs 45m of fuel if you're spending most of your time near sea-level. Climbing then becomes a solid tactic with 30m of fuel, especially on aircraft which can super-cruise at high altitude, and there will also be those that can get away with 20m of fuel or min-load with an external fuel tank like a true interceptor. It reminds me of the Me-163 or Ki-200. I've noticed that running out of fuel isn't a problem if most of their team is already dead as top-tier jet aircraft can glide half way across the large air sim maps with no engine power and, given enough altitude, still make it back to base.

We really need top tier Air RB to be split into - EC and regular Air RB. Also this 16 vs 16 crap in small maps is aweful.

This is exactly what I want from top tier. Good BVR fights, where you must know how your radar works, how your missile works, and how to properly use it. Or masking on terrain and going for close range surprise kills. Just like we play on DCS pvp, but on a more casual experience. But at least I hope there's enough BR separation for those who don't enjoy this gameplay don't be forced in it. 13.0 seems a good spot for BVR

There will always be a bunch that will like watching this kind of content. I enjoyed the video for gameplay as well as you talking through it. A good video is just that, a good video. You dont need to have great gameplay to make a good video.

0:45 for that tactic you can go 20 minutes or 30 on the bigger maps, if you are comfortable with not afterburning completely towards the own airfield. And the gained climb performance is huge

DCS has way more advanced missiles and people manage to make fun BVR videos as well as even merge videos when they fly low enough to avoid the BVR mess. I am sure you will figure out how to do what dozens of other's already have eventually.

I took out 6 phoenixes yesterday as a joke (never done this before don’t cook me) got 3 kills, went rtb changed to my normal loadout with 2 phoenixes then got another kill with a phoenix so I got top of the team most kills all being phoenix kills

What I've noticed about the AIM-54C compared to the AIM-54A, the C seems to have better IOG (That little feature where if the missile loses lock before it can go pitbull, it'll fly towards the targets last known location instead of going stupid). Don't get me wrong, it's definitely better to keep lock until they can go pitbull, but say you end up in a sticky situation, where you have a Pheonix pitbull'd on you, and you need to defend, meaning you'll have to break lock before your missiles pitbull, you need to be able to rely on your ACTIVE RADAR HOMING MISSILES to find the target on their own, instead of being a fatass Sparrow, with the 54A, your odds of successfully doing that are shit, with the 54C tho, they are pretty decent

I never thought the day would come where phenoix spam will become the new f14 meta, since I won't be getting the f16c anytime soon I guess I'm gonna have to do this with my f14b

The only reason why airRB top tier with phoenixes is like this is because objectives are meaningless (kill all planes is the only thing that matters) and the only kills you are getting with them are afk/premium players. If AMRAAMs and other BVR missiles that are actually capable of hitting targets close to the ground come in (ie. the ground is no longer a missile invulnerability shield), then you will see the entire meta change with BVR range standoffs similar to how it works in sim games like DCS. Once competent players realize they can't just burn at max speed close to the ground, be invulnerable to all missiles, and engage in massive furball dogfights, this sort of BVR gameplay will become the norm. The only reason why we even still have these massive furballs every airRB match is **because** current BVR missiles actually can't hit *shit* at BVR ranges. Missiles enabling kills at longer ranges **AGAINST COMPETENT PLAYERS** will force the entire fight to spread out and will likely lead to a lot more IR and gun based dogfights once everyone has expended their BVRs.

why can I not get my radar to work like yours does, you make these missiles look easy and I cannot lock onto anything with them at any distance with any radar mode. Very frustrating

i think you should look into DCS bvr gameplay, as i feel this is what warthunder will evolve too. There are still ways of getting WVR, but you could discuss more things like radar and missile capabilities and BVR tactics such as F pole manouvers etc.

This is the kind of gameplay that the F-16C will do if the AIM-120 were implemented… still will do dogfight, but way less… anyway lets see how top tier goes with the new top dogs when the update arrive this week

I think they should divide the current RB into 2 different modes, one should be a little like what it is now, maybe slightly smaller maps. And the other mode should have EC maps or even be EC with lineups like tank RB. And they should divide tank RB too, following the same concept. Like an Arcade+ and RB, or RB and RB+

I am also a tad bit worried about the future where there will be all these crazy 50g, 60g extremely flare resistant and thrust vectoring missles doing 180s for people in top tier. I can already smell the amount of teamkills that will happen. Gaijin will probably have to find some way to make it playable, the most obvious tactic may be to lower the amount of people per game.

Great vid. Nowadays I only play air sim. Now it comes down to positioning and awareness. A lot of us hate big maps but if mfs are lobbing AMRAAMS on the Smol maps then it’ll be an even bigger cluster fuck. Sad to say but the f14 is about to be phased out in game. It already kind of is. That plane just doesn’t fit in the meta. You climb up high, shoot your girth rockets and bug out. At least if you remotely want to survive but that doesn’t work. If you commit everybody and their grandma will go for you because you’re an easy target.

Unfortunate how the snail allows everyone to "fly low" to avoid radar missiles. It's an exploit that effectively killed the BVR arena for WT. It's also given the player-base a crutch. Most importantly, the content creators suffer and the issue is compounded via lack of advertisement for this game. Personally, I enjoy jets and the associated gameplay but the current state of WT has driven me to DCS in search of a better experience. Your gun skills in the head-on are unmatched sir, and you deserve to be commended for them! Even if the top tier experience is dooky, please continue to report on it as your report may be the straw to break the snails shell and they fix some sh!t! One can hope right? Happy hunting sir! o7

I think an early 120 wouldn’t be too bad, they’ve got something like 20-25mi of range as opposed to the 100mi of the aim54. They’ll be outraged by the top teir semi active missiles in game now so I don’t think a ton will change

It's very arcade. This is the issue. The active homing missiles work well in, say, DCS because there are so many things that the pilot needs to do. In WT, you press one button a few times, your missiles are gone and you get a kill or two. Issue compounded by the fact that everything is basically in range due to small maps. No need to manipulate your radar array to ID planes, no need to comm with AWACS to get vectored in, literally spawn in, let your plane fly forward, hit one button a few times and done. You don't even really need to look at your actual radar, just stay in third person and click one button like a frustrated grandpa on a slow computer. If Gaijin wants to go with more modern planes, fine. But flying needs to get more technical and maps much bigger.

Low tier scrub here - I noticed at around the 2:42 mark you were on full WEP with both throttles and the fuel suddenly jumped from fast to very fast - what was happening here ? My understanding is that at 100% throttle fuel drops second by second, at WEP it drops at a faster rate depending upon the engine, I have noticed that the F-16 and miG-29 are real fuel hogs in this respect. is there some sort of two stage WEP I am not aware of ?

This is why I play 10.3 it has the best balance of gunfights and missiles.

Man, read on how phoenixes work. They track with their own radar only on last 19km of flight. Before that you should use your radar in TWS mode to allow them to track their targets if they maneuver or change their course. That will improve your efficiency greatly
