For over a decade, Southeast Asia’s largest maritime countries-Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam-have engaged in extensive naval modernization programs. Though they have done so with varying levels of intensity, they all have been driven to modernize their navies by changes in their strategic environment, the biggest of which have been the growth of China’s economic and military power and its aggressive assertion of its South China Sea sovereignty claims. Ultimately, those changes are also what have led the four countries to hedge, to one degree or another, the risks associated with China’s rise.

The Philippine Navy only started its modernization in early 2015 just less than a decade from using WW2 era ships now they have some capable modern ships and still gradually modernizing its fleet to replace all their old ww2 era ships.

The Indonesian navy also ordered several warships made in the local shipyard : 1 unit ocean hidrografi ship 105 meter 2 unit OPV 98 meter 2 patrol boat 60 meter 2 Unit Red White Frigate 140 meter 1 Unit Corvette 73 meter

I doubt they can project as a united force as each individual member country has their own separate agenda. Even during their annual meetings, they won't even criticize Myanmar's military junta. Even with China bullying Philippines, I don't see any other country coming to their aid except the US

Brunei lease Pulau Muara Besar to China. Even the locals are prohibited from entering that area without permission. China already has a Port/Base in South East Asia.

Destroyers are expensive & mostly too large to operate in littoral areas. Most Asean navy biggest ships are Frigates with half the capability of that destroyers. It should be enough

Destroyer warships will strengthen the Indonesian Navy but have not yet decided on the choice, type 052d from China or Orizzonte Class from Italy or from other countries.

Lmao Thai has a carrier with no heli nor airplane on board & it set sail once every 5 years for a 3 day 2 night excursion within its water . For your information the Thais are looking to dispose their only carrier which never have a single plane landed since commission, of your country is interested you may contact them 😁😁 destroyer are designed for long distance petrol offensive platform which none of the ASEAN have the need to do so nor afford one . Only one that came close was the Singaporean ship which estimate weight more than 10k tons which pronounced to build for patrolling , humanitarian assistance, rescue operations during peace time etc but it’s also a modular system depending on mission , they have announced going to build 6 of these mega ships with an option ti build another 2 more . Just like Japan self defense naval forces, their light aircraft carrier are named as helicopter transporter 😂 Singapore version named as MRCV multi role combat vessel instead of destroyer.

Incomplete info for Indonesia … don’t forget Red and White Frigate which will be the heaviest and strongest surface warship in ASEAN. And Destroyer class also soon to be considered in coming years.

its cruising speed and no naval ship will fully go on their max speed since its consumes a lot of fuel not unless its necessary or they are in a hurry.
