That was a great video and I loved every minute of it. I love these deep dives into a subject but I also like the 20-30 min summaries like Clans and Dynasty's video had. You guys should do the same with the other Irish units and sub units. Gaelic forces like the Kerns, Horse Boys, Bonnaght, and their cavalry as well as non-Gaelic forces in Ireland like the Redshanks and Norman Irish. I know the Norman Irish did adopt Gaelic culture but they also used Anglo-Norman tactics as well. That is a lot of video potential with a summary video complimented with a deep dive video.

Hi Guys Great vid,, I often wondered why the Gaelic clans never decided to develop their own Gallowglass style warriors? they obviously saw first hand the impact they had on the battlefield.
@IrishMedievalHistory

There were armoured soldiers effectivly the nobles of each clan would have been equipped according to wealth much like most of the medieval world and the Kern were also an effective fighting force often missenterpted to have been ineffective due to lack of armour which we see now is not the case, the reason why the Gallowgalss work is because your noble class is only a limited pool of men so having the mercenaries means you swell your ranks, they can also be disbanded when funds are low, they also provided their own armour and training effectively they work out cheaper in the long run for the clans and families.

Thank you kindly, it's always great to learn more about my Suibhne forebears. If the MacSuibhne's came over with the Vikingers, how do we account for King Suibhne Geilt, living in the 7th Century?
@brendansweeney5644
@brendansweeney5644 3 ай бұрын
There is no connection between the mythological figure of Suibhne - who may or may not have existed - and the historical forbears of the McSweeneys/McSweens who originated in the West of Scotland. The McSweens descend from a different historical figure who lived in Argyll in the 12th century in Sween castle on Sween Lough.

Great and very informative about a subject that is often over romanticised. Just about Hugh O'Neill, it is often hard to see through the disguises he created (and misinterpreted by historians ever since). He was never actually Elizabeth's best friend - though he did portray himself as Elizabeth's ally, then becoming her worst enemy. In relation to Gallowglass, O'Neill built up a new type of Gaelic army, based on pike and the caliver musket and inspired by Spanish practices - which for a long time was better than Elizabeth's forces. (And like the gallowglass, still described by many as barbarian etc)

I see a lot of information on the Kern and the Gallowglass, but the Celts have such a rich cavalry tradition, I can't believe that they didn't possess some excellent cavalry. What were they like? The real drive for galógalaidh is that they were hirable mercenaries that could be used as a main bodyguard force for Irish Kings/chieftans. The reality is that in Ireland, Chieftans did not arm or train the ceithern. The reason for this is that in Ireland chieftns did not have standing armies. To do so would leave them open to being usurped by one of their rivals. You don't train and arm the populace when the populace might be used against you. The galógalaidh did not have the same internal politics and simply worked for pay and so could be used as a loyal elite force that could be relied on in battle and a symbol of power to rivals and make them think twice about trying to overcome the current leader.

Yes, when i stated they adopted children in the irish custom there would have also been no reason for them not to take on men of good stature and military prowress regardless of ancestry, the mans standing within the rank structure would no doubt have been lower at first.

No one people are limited to the same hair and eye color. Ireland has some of the highest amounts of red hair and green eyes in the world and plenty of Irish have blonde hair and blue eyes. Even many surnames in Ireland mean things like “the fair one” or the “blonde one” or things of that nature.

Statues Of Kilkenny were really about preserving Norman-French culture and language. It had nothing, it seems, to do with Anglo-Saxon culture,a culture equally despised. The statuses are written in Norman French, not English. To be an Englishman, at that time, was to be a Norman, and a French speaker. Hence, why Edmund Burke was fond of calling himself an ''English man'', in that older sense (according to Connor O' Cruise's biography of the Conservative Statesman).

True, yet by the middle of the 1300s in order to augment their numbers (always dwindling due to heavy battlefield casualties) those ferocious Norse-Gaels from the Hebridean Islands began to recruit more & more Native Irish Gaels into their ranks (equally fearsome in fighting spirit as their Norse-Scottish mentors!). By 1450 the vast majority of Gallowglass mercenaries serving in Ireland were of pure Irish Gaelic origin (granted most still fought with Norse style axes, relics of the Viking age maintained as proud tradition!).

At first yes, but they settled in Ireland for centuries and eventually formed a warrior cast. By the 14th century they began to recruit local Irish men. Their ranks would've almost have been entirely Irish.
