It was nicknamed "The Game of the Century" by Hans Kmoch in Chess Review. Kmoch wrote, "The following game, a stunning masterpiece of combination play performed by a boy of 13 against a formidable opponent, matches the finest on record in the history of chess prodigies
Donald Byrne (1930--1976) was one of the leading American chess masters at the time of this game. He had won the 1953 U.S. Open Championship

I have so much respect for D Byrne for NOT resigning. So many players resign and deprive everyone the joy of seeing the game played out to the final blow.

@SilentForceX
@SilentForceX 10 жыл бұрын
It's interesting, because respect is why experts resign early. Experts know when they lose and resign so that the game doesn't drag on and waste everyone's time. It also implies arrogance if you know you're going to lose but play anyway, hoping your opponent will mess up.

Exactly. It's a well-known part of chess etiquette. BlakeHall got it completely wrong, Byrne was probably just hoping for a blunder from a 13 year old kid. Well tough luck.

Just to set the record straight, Byrne was not hoping for a tsunami, as he said himself: "When it got to the position where I was lost, I asked some of the other competitors if it might be a nice thing to let the kid mate me, as a kind of tribute to the fine game he played. They said, ‘Sure, why not?’ and so I did." This is a great video anyway, thanks Mato!

Towards the end of the game Donald Byrne decided to give a little satisfaction to Bobby Fischer, knowing that the game was hopeless, so he kept playing to let Bobby checkmate him.

Everyone complains that white didn't resign, but they are wrong for not considering the context of the game. This was a club game at the Brooklyn (maybe Manhattan Chess club) not a tournament. It showed a lot of class to let a 13 y/o to play to mate against an IM. We see 13 y/o IM's all the time now - not so in 1965. Also, it is called the game of the century because that is what a kibitzer (who was a journalist I believe) at the time.
