3 жыл бұрынOn September 14, 2013, the Akron Zips nearly pulled off a colossal upset in the Big House when they lost to #12 Michigan 28-24. The Zips got all the way inside the Michigan 5 yard line with 25 seconds remaining but could not score and Michigan was able to survive. Akron was aided by a poor performance from Michigan QB Devin Gardner who turned the ball over 4 times. If Akron had pulled off this upset, it would have been one of their biggest wins in school history and would have shocked the College Football world. Feel free to comment ideas for future videos. I remember watching it at a local brewery wondering what in the hell is wrong with Michigan. Unfortunately this game was a preview of what would come for the rest of the year.

I was about to say that Akron got robbed because there was, clear as day, one second left when the ball hit the ground, but then I remembered it was fourth down anyway

You can't really blame Gardner though. He was only bad because he was 100% the victim of awful, idiotic coaching, including a consistently non-existent offense line. Gardner was an incredible athlete and a highly-rated dual threat recruit that was SUPPOSED to be playing for RichRod's zone option read spread offense. Instead he wound up with Brady Hoke completely wasting him, trying to force him into an outdated 1990's offense that didn't even match his skillset while being forced into a drop-back pocket passer role while constantly having to run for his life behind a turnstile offensive line. Given proper coaching, development, and scheme that actually fit his incredible skillset, or shit even an average O-line, he would be playing in the NFL right now. Hoke and co did the exact same thing with Denard Robinson.

App State was WAY better than this Akron team. Akron went 1-11 the year before. They went 5-7 in 2013. Meanwhile, Brady Hoke was fired the following season from Michigan.

@@zymaymyn But Akron was actually a step above App State. Akron plays in the MAC, which is still FBS. But App State was at the FCS level when they beat Michigan, which makes that win an even bigger deal than if Akron had beaten them in this one.

Sept. 12, 2015 - Toledo vs. (18) Arkansas. Toledo won 16-12. To be fair, Toledo was very good that season. They also beat Iowa St. 30-23, got as high as #19 in the AP poll and finished the season with a 10-2 record.

The mistakes Michigan made gave Akron a ton of confidence and a reason why they came out aggressive in the second half. A missed field goal, fumble in the red zone, and then the INT. This is easily a 24-3 game at the half that would of made the game different where Michigan would of walked away in a landslide as expected. This is the worst win keeping Akron in the game too long almost lost them the game and this was unacceptable against a G5 team that you should roller over.

This game was a rude awakening for how the rest of the season was going to go. The ND game we thought we were going to have a great year, but this game revealed the true colors of the 2013 team.

@@Noliestold93 could have blown them out but multiple redzone turnovers changed the whole game completely and that gave Akron confidence. Leaving an inferior team in the game for too long can make them grow more confidence.

Ah yes... I remember this season. Gardner comes out wearing #98 vs Notre Dame and looking like a Heisman candidate only for the team to look like hot garbage rest of the season including the Akron and Uconn games... Only then to somehow nearly beat Ohio State despite the horrible 2pt play call

Thanks PSC, but as a big fan of underdogs everywhere, watching these "almost upset" videos triggers me every time. Dammit Akron. Make that 45-yard kick (it hit the upright!) and it's a different game -- kick a chip shot FG on the last play of the game and win. Or go for 2 after you make it 21-16 to make it a 3-point game in the 4th quarter and then kick the chip shot to force OT. Sigh.

The Akron one would of been way worse than the Army one. Army almost beat OU in Norman a year prior. But with Akron it would of been worse since it’s a G5 team you should of beaten by 41 not 4 coming down to a goal line stand.
