We continue our story from the Original Gameboy video.
While the Game Boy Pocket was a smaller and lighter revision, the Game Boy Color is the true successor to the original Game Boy. Featuring improved ergonomics, a smaller and lighter form-factor that came with an increase in power. With the release of the Game Boy Color in 1998, Nintendo finally delivered on players' most-requested feature - a vibrant, color screen. The new LCD was capable of displaying striking colors even in direct light and its backward compatibility meant owners could play both beloved classics and new titles in color with no motion blur. On top of that, the Game Boy Color also included an infrared communications port, allowing gamers to play wirelessly with friends and trade Pokémon without cables. Although this 8-bit handheld wasn't quite a next-gen device, it still offered plenty of reasons for gamers to purchase it again. Millions did just that - the Game Boy Color went on to be an incredible commercial success, selling nearly as many units as the original Game Boy in a fraction of the time.

Good catch! That was my mistake. It does the following for Pokemon. 1.)Puts the player's team in the other player's Trainer House through Mystery Gift 2.)Receives special items through Mystery Gift. Just to clarify for anyone reading this in the future!

Yes, it was good because it was my first videogame anything. I didn't have a gameboy og or pocket, so GB backwards compatibility, GB-GBC cross compatible (games that could play on an original but would have color if played on a color), and exclusive games, all were new to me.

I remember I completely missed the GameBoy Color in my youth. Went straight to Advance. I've played several Color exclusives on emulator after the fact, though, and they're quality. Metal Gear Ghost Babel and Shantae and genuinely great games.

Nintendo basically Frankensteined a color screen onto the original Gameboy, giving new life to the 8-bit handheld temporarily until its much more powerful successor was ready.

It's very strange that the Color's lifespan was so short. Especially given how many people remember it's impact. It's just a part of my memory growing up that remains a bit fuzzy. As I remember seeing the Color absolutely everywhere, but I didn't know that the gap between the Color and Advanced was no time at all.

You still needed to use link cables to play multiplayer or trade pokémon tho. The IR only did some minor things in very few games.

Yes, I am actually looking into the IR now as a strange feature that wasn't taken advantage of.

I never had this one- borrowed a friends Game Boy for some games and owned a Game Boy Advance, but this one went me by. Possibly because I, even at that time, had managed to find a good emulator that could handle both GB and GBC... it wasn't a very complex device in that regars, regardless of whether it was a "gen-upgrade" or just a "Game Boy Pro"-like upgrade.

Sure the GBC had exclusives, however it was still an 8-bit handheld. What constitutes next gen anyways? Exclusives, cpu or memory upgrades? IMO id go with a sort of GB pro idea, just an upgrade. However an amazing one at that.

It's always been a fascinating debate, because yes it did have exclusives, but you are also dealing with the argument of a color screen. Which is just such an insane leap forward compared to the Original. I'd struggle to think of Pro versions of any console that have had such a leap. Regardless though it's always been a really fun part of gaming history.

GBC was a far better upgrade than the OG GB.
