Extreme props to this TKD practitioner for putting himself out there. He goes by ITF Sama, so we'll continue with that nickname. In this three sparring commentary, ITF Sama goes up against three different Muay Thai guys to test out his ITF Taekwondo. Let's see how the Muay Thai guys best him in various striking distances. There is something amazing about his TKD kicks, but he is unable to couple them with the correct punches and distance management. Lots more lessons in the video.

Muay Thai's "slow start" is more than just them testing the waters and feeling you out. Although it is majorly that too. A lot of it is caused by cultural pressure. Because it is in the early rounds where bets are placed by the audience at the stadium.

I loved watching this dude. Out of all the TKD people you've put I honestly think this dudes the best one. His TKD had like no slop, and while he was having trouble, he seems to have like actual theory and an idea of how to use his TKD effectively. Usually something that annoys me about traditional martial artists is that they want to test it, but you can tell they lose faith and confidence in it REALLY quickly, but this kid not only keeps at it, but maintains the form the whole time, he makes it look like how you'd like to think it looks. The holes are still their obviously in terms of practicality but this kid has talent and the muay thai guys are being nice, but you can tell he loves the martial art and really takes it and what he's doing seriously. It's a special little thing you don't get to see too often. Thanks for showing this

Thing is though, asking for TKD fighters to not be flashy is like asking David Beckham not to bend it around the keeper. I used to do ITF when I was younger and to this date have not seen a TKD fighter who isn't all show with no power/impact. Most kicks weren't even executed to reach the opponent but purely to show off.

All 3 muay thai fighters showed great respect and restraint. Rd1 the Thai was throwing punches soooo slow, with almost zero power and they were still landing. Rd2 Thai fighter didn't throw a single knee to the face, twd guy just didn't have an answer to the clinches and would have been lights out Rd3 Thai fighter just let tkd guy burn himself out. Thai fighters are so conditioned they could eat those kicks to the legs and body all day long, even if they didn't check them, they would just walk the fighter down to a range where twd guy couldn't even throw any kicks. All in all, the fighters were just having fun with no real intention of either hurting or humiliating their opponent 👍

When I first crossed over from TKD to Muay Thai I’ll never forget realizing I’ve never been kicked in my thigh that way before, same with the first time checking a kick without shin guards. It unlocked so much! I think blending TKD and Muay Thai is good as they compliment what the other lacks.

I’d say the Muay Thai guard and stance is far better than the TKD stance for combat. A nice Muay Thai teep to a TKD spinning back kick would be flashy and great if it lands😂 or getting in the clinch and shifting their weight to the side and putting them off balance for a heel kick straight to the head. Those 2 arts mixed would be beautiful

As someone who did karate and specialized in kicks, I really appreciated being taught by Muay Thai guys to put knees and teeps into the mix. It allows me to be flashy and have fun, but to also not feel lost close range and control space (i.e in a clinch or they pass your optimal range). Now I can use all aspects of the leg. Shoutouts to both styles in this vid.

@@pandafragranceWhy are you being so snarky? The tkd guy has amazing kicks. The problem is the points system in TKD, and that they are not training for mma-style brutality. If he incorporates MT/boxing techniques into his repertoire he would be a devastating striker by all accounts. Those flashy spinning kicks are not useless. It's the training surrounding them that is the problem (for MMA).

The problem with tkd guys is that usually they only train to fight other taekwondo guys with their specific set of rules. So they don't know what to do against fighters who practice mma or muay thai. If they used to train to fight muay thai guys with muay thai's rules, we would see better results.

Remember ITF sparring is a tatami sport not a ring sport. Usually they compete on 8x8 metre mats or even 10 x 10 so its a big area. Athletes can exit the mat and accept a warning so they don't get overwhelmed. Punches are only worth one point, while kicks to the body are two and kicks to the head are three. Cardio is a big issue because ITF matches are just two two minute rounds so it's extremely high tempo. Typically when they spar muay thai or full contact fighters they have success for the first couple of rounds because of their movement and unusual striking patterns. They'll throw hook kicks and ax kicks because it's worth three points but its not for damage. But then they gas out later. Check out Cage Warriors fighters Adam and Ryan Shelley because they successfully transitioned from an ITF background to professional MMA.

I have seen Kickboxers, Muy thai lose BADLY, BADLY when going to TKD competitions. All the spinning back kicks were never meant to land, if they did land it would be eating out of a pipe. In an open area, they cannot touch the ITF TKD period. The point of the 2 minute round is that if you cannot take out your opponent in 2 minutes there is something wrong with you. Also remember in a ITF competition, one has to fight 5-9 different opponents, all with varying skills, MT, kickboxing do not do this. If a black belt in a competition fights 5 diff opponents he is fighting for 10 minutes at high tempo. ITF was built & is used for the korean army hand to hand combat for killing, it is only put into the sport side for a bit of competition, the full ITF as used by the North Koreans is a hand to hand combat killing martial art. Muy Thai is a gambling sport, they are designed to last long for bets to make money. ITF is fast, designed to take out an opponent AFAP On the street, for self defense, fighting I do not think you can beat it. A good karate style though for self defense is also good. I would love to see a Muy Thai fighter try clench or grab an ITF fighter on the sport mats, not going to happen.

His mistake is actually his distance management he is kicking as if the opponent is coming forward as a counter most of the kicks he initiated if the guy stood still (which many times they did) it wouldn’t landed also telegraphing with spins most people just back away and come in after you spin since you’ll be slightly disoriented or regaining balance

I really gotta give him props for having a good fighting spirit. And his form is really good. He's lacking in power and speed, but his cardio is really impressive. To be fair, it's really hard to throw spin kicks with any power in such a small ring. When you're this boxed in, usually it's better to pound them with fast double kicks and sneak in a head kick or leg kick if you're a rebel. But yeah, gotta work in the clinch. Mad respect to both fighters here for being great sports

Most TKD critics say TKD has no fists, elbows, knees and leg kicks. But this is like saying that TKD players have no intelligence. Such restrictions exist only in competitions. And groin and eye attacks are prohibited in all official matches. But if there are no restrictions, more than 50% of matches will end up with groin or eye attacks. The MMA also has a large ban on hitting. It's not that you can't use a skill, it's that you don't use it to prevent major injuries. And the reason why TKD trainees seems weak is that TKD has many trainees and does not have a fessional league. Also, many TKD trainees do TKD for physical and mantal training and fun, not just for fighting. On the other hand, the reason why MT trainees seems strong is that there is a rough professional league, but not all martial arts trainees want such a match. There is a wide gap between professionals and amateurs in any field. TKD Master Kwan-young Lee won the battle against 13 knife-wielding gangsters in France. The incident was also reported in French newspapers, and he was recruited by the French Interior Ministry in 1981 and served as a bodyguard instructor for the Special Crime Investigation Unit of the National Police Agency. Any martial art is ultimately similar and is governed by a martial artist.

just those things won't help him against muay thai guys much if at all tbh. These MT dudes were seriously going at max control in order to just help buddy learn ngl. He needs to learn boxing (he has good loose hands but lacks fundamentals, a sharp 1-2 would be killer), how to check/catch kicks, and how to respond to both of those things in reverse, and that is just for out-fighting only. The clinch is game over.

He said my strikes are violently whipping like Kali does. It's weird because I didn't know anything about this martial art. After a while, the respective MT guy gives TKD guy a little glimpse what a real fight could look like. Also, TKD guy looks pretty young, so he maybe got some puppie protection. But they cannot let him think he is the boss. They give him one or two reality checks each. I've found that if the MT person exclusively uses a tight shell then they can get overwhelmed by the huge variety of shots coming at them if you use a tkd base. Keep the spins for when you've made reads, and don't let them pressure forward as much by using straight kicks and footwork, and try to actually have a threat with your hands. Id say those are the basics of fighting that style. One thing I've noticed in these videos is tkd ppl don't seem to use a lot of feints or fakes. There's a lot of movements that could be considered as those but there doesn't seem to be much thought into how to use the reactions and reads.

as an ITF myself, i have to point that the reason you don't see the elbows, knees and other techniques is for a sparring/competition thing. Always nice to get the opportunity to have a fun little sparring session with other kickboxing practicioners as a TKD competitor. Gives you a really good feel on your weaker areas. Unfortunately with his tool set he is even more limited vs the muay thai artist by this casual sparring match. ITF TKD benefit heavily from being allowed to go for knockout kicks. But, hes not gonna go for any Knock outs. ITF TKD knock outs are designed from counters and follow up from feints or bait. He should take note from the MT specialist if he goes right into matches at medium intensity. Feeling out your opponent and their spacing is key to your distancing. That being said as a former TKD competitor, this is how most TKD specialists above 3rd Dan spar. Certainly not the best display I've seen but he's at such a disadvantage and it's casual so it's hard to say if he actually fights much more effectively in real matches. He certainly shouldn't be telegraphic his kicks this much even in sparring though. Though if he gets faster, it might not matter as much. Since it's not too difficult to switch up the kick mid spin.

ITF guy doesn't really look like an ITF guy, probably cross-trains? From what I've seen from ITF it's the same hands down bouncy footwork as WTF, even at high levels, and no low kicks obviously. Edit: Yeah in his channel description it says he's interested in Boxing, Muay Thai, TKD, and BJJ. Seems like a content creator who does multiple martial arts aiming to base his reputation around being the "TKD guy", sort of like Rokas from Martial Arts Journey (which is completely fine, just pointing it out)

Because when you fight worthy opponents a lot of that goes out the window. Muay Thai dudes just stopped it quick or let them gas out. It’s impressive the the ITF guys can move like that & probably works on normal people. But these dudes are just more conditioned & harder to get away with alot. Was cool watching.

this is some good respectful sparring, the TKD guy has potential, i feel like if he simplifies his kicks and learns to box a bit, he can become pretty good. Imo the best way for him to do that is to learn boxing in his original stance (or at the very least as close to it as possible) rather than in a pure boxing stance.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: train in Muay Thai as your base and try to have free time to learn Taekwondo. Or at least any kinds of spinning kicks to add more weapons to your arsenal. I have seen many MT fighters, especially Thai that easily fall to spinning kicks coming from Kickboxers or fellow MT fighters that are somewhat trained in TKD. Because they got used to fighting in the usual roundhouse kicks, leg kicks, boxing, elbows, knees, and clinching that the least that they would expect is a spinning kick. Sure, spinning kicks seem predictable. But if you're not used to throwing one, it could be unpredictable. Because it still has a different trajectory and timing. Once you learned to enhance your balance, it will be very easy to throw spinning kicks on a whim without tripping.

While ITF Taekwondo does indeed look insanely cool I do feel they're quite limited to what they can use,I mean they only use their hands and feet which for some might be quite limiting, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't,the kicks of ITF Taekwondo are very scary and can come out of nowhere and a powerful kick is far worse than a powerful punch especially the spinning tornado kicks and their acrobatic movements can make them unpredictable so they've definitely got quite a bit going for them but I do prefer Muay Thai mostly because they have twice as many options to fall back on and can be equally if not more dangerous than most ITF Taekwondo techniques,you have your fists,your elbows, your knees and your shins and Tony Jaa is living proof on what Muay Thai is truly capable of,not to mention Muay Thai practitioners are as tough as nails and a real force to be reckoned with

I have trouble understanding why ITF competitors use the lead leg side kick so much. It looks totally powerless if there's no stepping momentum involved and it's not even fast enough to be used as a leg jab. Furthermore, it leaves you in a vulnerable bladed stance with slow recovery. A grappler can just slip to the side and take the back when the side kick whiffs.
@mythrin
@mythrin 11 ай бұрын
Its not the technique, its the way its set up in ITF that makes it less effective. People who cross train with MMA have very effective lead leg side kicks because they know how to time it, just look at Stephen Thompson.
@dogwink
@dogwink 11 ай бұрын
@@mythrin True, I've seen proper used of the lead leg side kick as a distance control or set up tool. As you mentioned, I have issues with the way ITF uses the lead leg, keeping it suspended and repeatedly "jabbing" while hopping on the back leg, like Hwoarang's flamingo stance in Tekken. Seems completely useless to me in an MMA context.

It's because scoring a point in tkd is far more important than doing damage, tkd don't fight like muay thai do, muay thai is very important to do as much damage to opponent before they do it to you, tkd is important to score point before opponent, different objectives result in different technique and outcomes.

seems like a considerable weight class difference. Great tkd though, good showcase. He is probably doing this for show, but watching old school itf tkd competitions you see that they very rarely throw a spin kick (for obvious reasons) and mostly focus on side kick and roundhouse kick thrown from a very fast forward movement, very close to what karate guys do.

During sparring the proper etiquette when you’re opponent throws a high kick rather it makes contact or you catch the kick is to acknowledge it and easily let the kicker regain their stance.

That tkd guy is really good! He's clearly just taking it easy, because its a spar. All flashy, hitting at will but he couldn't fully commit to a KO blow to the head. If he was allowed to do so he would've knocked them out easy. Especially the first spar where the guy was way bigger. There was no way to push the bigger guy back if you're holding back your power. The 2nd spar with he smaller guy was more challenging as the smaller mauy thai guy grappled him and he had not answer for it. 3rd spar was more effort

I've noticed kickboxing or muay thai fighters around the world these days dont exactly fight in one style or another and that striking at high level just becomes more similar to each other and convoluted. They use techniques that both these guys are doing, spinning kicks, faster snappy kicks, heavy kicks, tkd style front kicks, mt teeps etc... Not really like one or another but well rounded and it makes sense.

MT fighters also train back kick, spinning round house kick and also jumping kick but they mostly use those kicks for defending when the first move was missed or when they knew that they're in a winning fight and would like show off, that's because typical round house kick and low kick are much more effective and they can throw some more nasty combination after the typical kicks.
