I personally thought that Garden of Words wasn’t meant to be a big amazing story that blew you away. I think it’s a film that just expresses the realities of life and our interconnection with each other and society + nature. Both characters brought out parts of themselves and moved on, kind of how life is sometimes and we don’t make a huge deal out of it. It’s just my interpretation but I loved that it didn’t try to aim an something, it aimed at what is true and that alone is what makes this film a good film.

i've always liked the rain, it was a nice... warm feeling to look out the window and seeing drops gently sprinkle, hearing the calm and constant raindrops that land on everything. at times it rains heavily and aggressively with strong wind, and i often thought that's the rain having mood swings

i really don't thing the age gap is the main issue in this movie. Sure it's there, but it's not even close to the main thing this film is about. It is not struggle due to age as society at all. Their age difference is only there for symbolic purposes. Yukino doesn't even really love him. Just enjoys his company.

I don't feel this was a Romance story. This is the story of two people that have stopped growing and developing as people because of the harsh realities of their lives. Despite Yukino being 12 years older, she isn't a very strong person, much like the boy. They both saw and accepted each other as normal people without judgment or ridicule, unlike the other people around them. It was because of this acceptance that both of them started learning how to move forward with life and mature, despite the harsh reality of their lives. It truly embodies the idea of "learning to walk in the rain."

I think the 46 minute run time is perfect, and the calming, therapeutic animation and sound is truly, beautiful. I do wish that more was done with the story, and I feel the Garden of Words left me with an empty and unresolved feeling. That being said, a lot is left for interpretation - and I love that. The bond the two characters share is wonderfully developed and even though they come from very different walks of life, the similarities are clear. After watching this movie, I desperately want to go to the park and sit in a cosy shelter under the rain. And hey, maybe I'll meet my soul mate, drink beer, and measure each other's feet.

I would say just for the animation alone that this movie needs to be known more. It won a couple of Awards in Japan; however, no critics in America reviewed it. It came out in 2013, and, of the movies that were nominated for an Oscar that year, possibly the only movies that could compete with it on an aesthetic animation level, i.e., on the quality of the animation alone, would have been Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, or Renner and Brunner's Ernest & Celestine.

The animation quality of this movie reminded me a lot of "Your Name". I didn't initially realise why until now, it's the same guy that made it! Needless to say, both this and "Your Name" are fantastically animated. I found it a shame that it wasn't longer, as a lot of unresolved content in my opinion, could have done with being another 20-30 mins longer.

The movie did a lot for such a short run-time but what impressed me most wasn't even a product of the movie itself and that was the English Dub which is even more surprising considering it was Sentai Filmworks, and the two main characters were both voiced by newcomers.

Great film, great review. Perhaps you may have missed the puddle for the raindrop. The story was perfectly clear, in that; just as you had said, the cultural stigma of an age difference between maturity and love was illustrated and enacted in a very interesting way. As I took from it, the film expressed just that- invoking within ourselves whether or not there were to be any elaboration upon- or just to make one wonder. Thanks for the review, sir and keep up the good work! *edit: I just watched this for the first time, 20 minutes ago on Netflix.

I enjoy that the Garden of Words doesn't have a huge dynamic plot. I don't find it underwhelming, but I do think it challenges our expectations of the artform. The length of the film does that as well. It's a film that takes place in quiet moments and the characters have a gentle yet profound impact on each other. I get a sense of where they were propelled later as a result of their connection. The subtle storyline feels very realistic and I think it conveys effectively how important the characters are to one another. Haha I also just enjoy watching the rain too. The visual beauty doesn't subtract form the emotional subtlety for me. I think they compliment each other very well.

"Lonely sadness is a state of solitude that deprives people of the most basic need for companionship. To call Garden of Words a simple romance story is to undermine the entire theme, cast away the significance of the message, and belittle the pain of those it is meant to depict." --Kaze, Beneath the Tangles

As the poems and concept of the story stood out to invoke emotion and questions, the visual art does the same. To love, to enjoy, to want. If you look up traditionally tanka poems, they are cut abruptly. I believe the way the story flows and ends imitates the way traditional tankas and haikus are made. At the same time this is (in my opinion) an art piece in many levels and so open to everyone own interpretation. Thank you for the content.

I've always believed that it's actually about loneliness, both characters are painfully alone (she a little bit more than him and I think that's why he's is mature and she isn't) more than a love story is about finding comfort in a difficult time even if it doesn't ends the way you wanted. I wouldn't recommend it to outsiders tho (not anime watchers i mean) I've done it a couple times and they just don't get it 😑 (they're waiting for the american version with Kate Hudson and Timothy chalawhatever I guess)

Makoto Shinkai's films don't do much for me at all. I don't think he's able to create characters with believable romances. I'd say this is better than 5cm per Second, but I still didn't think it was that good. I related to the characters a bit better in this, as they at least weren't children in love. I do agree that the visuals are fantastic, regardless.
