It's cuz they switched to a new voice actor who was willing to work for cheaper, and i guess they couldnt find someone who could sing it like the original. Such a shame.

There were commercials before 1998 that I’ve Been trying to look for. It was epic jungle music with a deep voiceover before “the general” became the iconic figure.
