About the SOFTWARE I use in the video: A huge amount of my production involves Adobe CC (my affiliate link tinyurl.com/v7fvqgo) I use Adobe photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, Audition and sometimes Animate. I would be nowhere without these softwares. You can get them all with a comfortable monthly subscription, or you can get subscriptions to individual plans. Check them out and see what works for you. Aug 7th 2020. That First Background Music Gives Me An Aesthetic Vibe Of The 80s/90s. Although I Was Born In 2005. I Would Imagine An 80s/90s Aesthetic Pink Building And A Blue Sky With Clouds And Palm Trees And Me On Top Of That Building, Leaning Both My Arms On The Edge Or Putting My Hands In My Hoodie Pockets. The Music Is Not 80s/90s Kind-Of-Like, It's Just A Feeling Of Nostalgia Of How It Plays. And It's Good.

And I Would Imagine Playing That Music In My Head While Thinking About Tom And Jerry: The Movie (1992) That Came A Week Ago. Another Imagination: I Imagine About A Man Falling Off A High Building, About To End His Life. Just Like Miles, Jumping Off A Building, The Guy Is Falling Lifeless Because He Has Emotional Distress. Both His Arms And Legs Are Up And His Back Down. And The Guy Is A Businessman. I Would Thought An Image/Picture About It, But Yeah, Animation Makes Sense Too. And Lastly, I Imagine About A Girl Standing On Top Of A Mountain Staring At The Grasslands And Then She Closed Her Eyes, Making A Bend T-Pose And Feeling The Breeze Blowing At Her. And The Animation Style About That Is Howard's Animation Style. And Yeah, That Is What I Was Imagining. So Thank You.

I wouldn't be mad if the whole MCU was made like this. I just watched it in the cinema and I fucking love the animation of this movie. How they brought so many comic elements like narration bubbles into the movie and made it look like comic but at the same time also extremely realistic. I think this movie will always stay a favourite of mine. One of the best movies, I've ever watched. Also, I love Gwen. She is awesome.

As an aspiring artist, I could not take my eyes away from the cinema screen when I first saw the movie. I was scared to even blink and miss some of its beauty. The animation was truly incredible.

I’ve been struggling with feelings of inadequacy and self confidence for ages (no thanks to some of my friends) and for someone to tell me that I can be an artist no matter my level. @@eggmma3926 I think almost every artist is like that, never being happy with your work. That's normal. By the time you finished your piece you've improved by making it and you can only see the mistakes. I think the mindset of just saying that you're an artist, instead of being a 'aspiring artist' is a better one. You're doing something you love and making awesome art, and every day you do it you will get better. I've been doing 3d for over 10 years and I still feel like I have no idea what i'm doing a lot of times :D But i still enjoy the hell out of it. Keep doing what you're doing, most important thing is you're enjoying it :)

YES! I had the exact same feeling. I was like holy shit I don't even wanna blink!! I was so excited and already antecipating the fact that the movie would eventually end and I'd have to wait months to see it on DVD :(

my 3d animation teacher has always told me "The reason that 3d animation that's trying to look 2d always looks terrible, is because all they do is animate it like a 3d animation, then drop the framerate and add a crappy cell shading filter to it. If they want it to look 2d, they have to animate it like it's a 2d animation." By this he meant they would have to create every single frame on it's own, making sure that it looks exactly how you want it to as if you were drawing a new frame, rather than drawing only key poses then letting the computer do the tweens. This was the first 3d movie I've seen so far that's gotten the 2d look perfect, because they made every frame looks correct, and that no movement looked stiff or robotic.

No wonder Into the Spider Verse just felt right to me. Yet Netflix's The Dragon Prince, another animation trying to emulate the old 2d anime style, just felt choppy and painful to my eyes. Like a video game with less-than-ideal framerates.

The anime 'Houseki no Kuni' also nails the 2D look using 3D. It's not as beautiful as this movie but it's pretty great!

Well, even if visually it's great, and even if it's a great movie, which it is. I don't really like the style of animation, I still believe it looks choppy, because it's still 3D, the medium is still too clear.

The shot of Miles taking his leap of faith, where they invert the image so he's falling towards the top of the screen, also has a metaphorical component. In the story, that's his moment of apotheosis, his moment of rising to become a superhero. So, in metaphorical terms, that's him flying for the first time.

What the use of chromatic aberration reminded me of was the slight color mis-registration that often happened on old comics pages. I'm sure that was deliberate.

Once I realized it was deliberate that became really obvious though the awkward part was just seeing it in the theater it kind of looks like you're watching a 3d film without the glasses. I definitely know the misalignment of color from old comics was a stylistic thing they were going for but I'm wondering if image misalignment from 3D films was also something they thought of when developing their look.

I went back and saw the movie again, and this time paid attention to the specific colors of the "misregistration" haloes. Throughout almost the whole movie, they're pretty much magenta and cyan: two of the CMYK process colors. But there's one exception I caught. In the scene in the Spider-Basement, when all of the massed Spider-People are telling Miles he's not ready to go up against Kingpin yet because he can't command his powers at will, and he breaks down under the pressure and runs... in that scene, the color haloes show up all over the place, and they're fire-engine red and dark blue. Spider-Man's costume colors.

Thank you for recognizing and going in depth on the amount of effort that went into the visuals. I was having a conversation with my coworker about this movie and he said he doesn’t really like the “cartoony” look and that he wished they went for a more realistic style, even though I tried desperately to explain to him that the art style is what makes it so unique. It seems every animation studio is just trying to be Pixar now, and Sony managed to create a fresh look that I hope is built upon in the near future.

I really hate the "but it's not realistic" argument. Who ever said realistic is better? It's just a choice.

@@umjackd In most cases I'd even argue that more stylistic/cartoonish is better, because it's timeless. The classic Disney films like Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, etc. or even heavily stylized more modern films (Wreck-It-Ralph) age well with time and haven't become off-putting to watch, unlike a lot of younger films attempting to be "cutting edge" with near hyper- realistic animation, (Avatar for example) which can't keep up with advancing technology and become dated within a few years or even months of the premiere. Even "live-action remakes" like Beauty and the Beast are unsettling to some to watch (really just the Beast ) and I doubt that'll get better with time.

"None of this happens by accident". I'm not an artist. My only interaction with art is as a spectator, a consumer. When I experience art and enjoy it; I've never thought about how many simultaneous factors are being combined into a finished whole. This just leaves me more in awe of anyone that can compose, write, sketch, choreograph, design, make and mold. Bravo

@@mrmcain5375 an ugee m708 gr8 size gr8 for beginners ranging at $45 can be found cheeper tho want something more known a wacom intuos its ranged at the lowest being $70,dont like graphic tablets cause you prefere something you draw on directly? well you can get the xp-pen artist 12 coming in at $200 then you got the kamvas 13 ranging at almost double at $380 or the ugee 19 display tablet at about $300 hope this helped ive used all of these ive owned the wacom intuos,the ugee m708 the xp-pen 13 and have tried a m8's kamvas 13 -hope this helped feel free to ask me for more help by replying

Also the scene with the car is a reference to Spiderman 2 (with Tobey Maguire) where in the old film this scene is very chaotic and dramatic, so when he in this new one ends the scene with punching the car away, instead of jumping over the table to save Mary Jane, that just makes it a bit more funny! great job, can't wait to see this one!

I was thinking the same thing when I watched Spiderman 2 the first time. "He could've punched that car. Spiderman has superstrength too!" Still, Spiderman 2 ranks high on my fave superhero films of all time.

also a slight hint of the fact that there seems to be a slightly different personality with Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man the one with the costume in the dinner is The Amazing Spider-Man as played by Andrew Garfield in the movie and is confident and open with his identity, loves being Spider-Man and would dine in a costume almost like it's perfect and as he goes on with his life he starts getting hit with hardships. While Toby Maguire Spider-Man was the one with the identity crisis. So that scene feels like a nod to BOTH of those movies fused together using the scenes from Toby Maguire with the character of The Amazing Spider-Man

10:04 What I also like about the animation in this shot is how each motion draws you into the next box. So if you follow the leg, the kick draws your eye diagonally up right to the alley where his downward motion draws you into the box below and the web shooting out draws you up to the next. It's a very effective way to create a through line in transitions so they're very smooth and easy to follow. Scott Pilgrim did this a lot too and to great effect

One note on the chromatic aberration stylizing is that it is applied as a replacement for the bokeh effect to present depth of field. The less in-focus a region is, the stronger the effect happens. As well, this stylization is inspired by the offset printing effect on old-school comic books, as the CMYK layers could not be printed with absolute precision once upon a time, thus resulted in the offset.

Just a small correction: The layers could be printed perfectly aligned, but that would have meant aligning them (run the machines, stop them, check the alignment, throw away the printed paper, align the machine, repeat until perfect), and that'd have cost money, making those comic books considerably more expensive.

Watching this gave me a whole new perspective on how this film was created. Such intricate detail and care taken into crafting such a unique and impressive film. It really makes me wonder what those negative reviews on rotten tomatoes complaining about the animation were thinking and did they see the same movie we all saw.

I love how the split video segment also leads the viewers eyes around. His web firing up to the next panel, him moving down, the green goblin fist pointing down, and then him walking 'out' of the panels at the end. Brilliant!

Going back to his “New York caricature” comment- this isn’t too prominent in the trailers, and probably even less visible to a non-American, but the “jumble of glass and neon” is the exaggerated Manhattan skyline. It’s sharp, it’s rendered in cooler colors on the wheel, and in the movie itself, it’s almost exclusively seen at night, in the snow, or both. It found it really impressive how it contrasts to Miles’ own burrow, Brooklyn, in its warm, bright colors and sunny lighting. In the movie, as all the Spiders explain who they are and where they came from, people ask Miles about his home dimension, and the boy just says, “Brooklyn.” A cute line in the narrative context, but from the way these two part of the city are presented, on some level, it doesn’t feel like that much of a stretch. It reminds me of a reverse “Wizard of Oz” - this kid starts off in a colorful, bright world and his adventure takes him to a stark, sharp place. If Dorothy’s journey was about learning to appreciate her home by leaving it, Miles learns to appreciate himself and what he can do by being taken out of his element.

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this makes me appreciate the TIME, TALENT AND EFFORT that goes into animations in whatever form. There are so many things we viewers just take for granted or dont pay any particular attention to. Meanwhile every movement, every frame is deliberate. The animator/artist is trying to accomplish a particular thing. Its incredible. I just saw the movie today and all the elements just came together so well.

Another thing to note would be the fact that the skyscrapers seem to form a half circle around Miles. This half circle points up, the direction where Miles is falling, and also Miles is in the center of that half circle, like he's being wrapped in the city, which is very fitting because the scene represents the moment when Miles finally learns to control his spider powers. The skyscrapers are intentionally exageratted for Miles to stand out, but the result is just so amazing.

To be honest when I pressed on the video I was expecting to get bored considering how ‘long’ it is, but you made every second engaging and insightful! I agreed with everything you said but never would I have had the language to ever explain such genius, but you did it exceptionally well! I love that car punch for 2 reasons, one... its hilarious and perfect. Two... We never get to see how strong Spidey actually is in most of his movies. In the comics, he is capable of insane things. Like for instance Aunt May gets shot and Spidey goes on a rampage looking for Kingpin, and Iron Man tries to stop him... it doesn't go well lol he rips his armor to shreds and leaves him dangling in a web caccoon hanging in an alley. There is another instance where he kicks a car into the side of a building, rips it in half and drags the front half (the heavier half) up to the roof of a building with ease... all in a matter of a split second, boom, rip, thwip, done. Spiderman is _really_ strong, and he constantly has to hold back while fighting people so he doesn't kill everyone! It's why he jokes so much... if you could punch a car out a window, rip an SUV in half, beat the crap out of Iron Man... and hold up a collapsing subway tunnel... how serious would you take some jabroney with a pocket knife snatching purses? Or some goofball dressed like a kangaroo!? Lol C'mon guys.. give up. Or spidey will punch your head off this planet. To me, having an overpowered super strong Spidey is important because it shows what makes him Spiderman... he could easily be an Avenger full time. He could easily stop all crime in NYC if he was just a tad more _Frank Castle_ about things. But he doesn't, he holds back, he makes sure he doesn't hurt or kill anyone... even criminals because they are human too and deserve to live. He want's to help people, not strike fear or intimidate anyone. It's better for him if his enemies dont take him seriously, because then he will always win. Everyone underestimates Spidey, and he likes it that way!

They have to animate on 1s during any camera move to avoid staggering. Also, not all the animation here is on 2s. They use 3s and 4s like some French animators do. I know some of the amazing animators that worked on this beauty!! Can't wait to rewatch it at least a hundred times. Good video! Cheers!

6:03 I love the detail that they gave gwen's costume ballot shoes then gave all of the classic Spiderman poses the feel of dance poses. Crouching while up on her toes instead of the balls of her feet and throwing her hands up like she's leaping across a stage instead of pulling her arms back into the 'spider' pose when jumping off the building.

Great Video! Although I don't think they were going for chromatic aberration as that's Red, Green, and Blue light separation you get with some lenses and video. I think they were going for CMYK offsetting you get in classic 4 color printing. It's essentially the same idea of misaligned colors, especially noticeable at edges, but with the 4 print colors cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

@@dontburstmybubble686 I had the same thought, momentarily. I *was* at a 3D showing. Some of the previews were in 3D, and while they were playing, I'd been experimenting with putting the 3D glasses on under my regular glasses, which turned out not to work well at all--I was getting a lot of bleed-through of the wrong images, and everything had these haloes (not colored haloes since these glasses work by circular polarization, but it did blur everything out). I'd gotten that sorted by the time the feature began, but when the aberration effect started to show up my first thought was "oh, no, the 3D's somehow screwed up again". It wasn't.

I've always thought Into the Spider-verse was awesome, I just couldn't tell for sure why. After this detailed analysis I realized how much work is done for every second and every frame of the movie. This truly deserves the Oscar and Golden Globe that it got.

1:49 THANK YOU! I've seen so many people complaining about this movie and The Dragon Prince saying "Seeing every frame is super distracting!" While I suppose they are entitled to their own opinions, they've been criticizing the makers as lazy or calling it an extremely poor choice. This is the first time I've seen someone praise it highly.

19:56 I'm not an expert or anything, but I really like the pose that Miles made in that shot, despite the fact that he is falling, but his feet and hands shows as if he's trying to go upwards, like how your hands and feet would look like if you can fly into the air, it's really great. And I think the fact that that shot was played later in the movie after the character has developed just strengthen the fact Miles has grown, we can see earlier in the movies he has a lot of unnecessary movements, flailing around, and whenever he's falling he actually feels like having no control over it, but in this shot we can see that his body looks compact, minimal movements, graceful pose, and the fact that he looks like he's flying shows that he have this under control, and this is his "flight" as spider man, that's so amazing in my opinion. This movie was amazing

This video is such a breath of fresh air. I'm so used to seeing "10 things wrong with ___" "Mistakes you missed in ____" type videos about movies now a days, it feels like people have forgotten how to just enjoy things. So seeing someone genuinely excited while going through it is just so great. I love it. I might not know much about animation but I also LOVED the style choices they made for this one. It really stands out as it's own thing.

Lord & Miller didn't direct this Phill Lord wrote it and they both produced, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman where directors. Idk how big of a roll they had and who did what so Lord and Miller could be responsible for the style but I'm not sure.

Was going to say just this, thanks for clearing that up! What's really cool is that one of the directors is an animator, and another is a storyboard artist. I doubt that Lord and Miller had anything to do with the specifics of the art style; Lord probably provided a lot of the humorous dialogue and general weirdness of the story and characters.

This is freaking spectacular!!! I loved all the detail in each scene you showed! I also loved that you pointed out each character's personality is shown through their movement and animation! This is one of my all time favorite Animated films and the animation is part of why. It is breathtaking, vibrant and SPECTACULAR!!! As someone who is working to create animated movies, you have really shown your knowledge for animation!

12:48 Phil Lord and Chis Miller did not direct the movie. They were (at the time) busy working the the Solo Star Wars movie but helped write and produce the movie. The directors were Peter Ramsey, Robert Persichetti Jr., Rodney Rothman

Amazing breakdown of the film. I was blown away even by the opening credits when I saw this a few days ago; and knew the rest of it would be a ride. The wide angle lens also makes the city seem as if it was a drawing with a strong 3 point perspective, which is how the cities were often drawn in the comics

The actual shading and highlights combined with the animation made some of the scenes from the movie look like they weren’t even animated if you covered their faces. Well done.
